Slyter, of this city, and Miss Emma Barton, of Wright Station, have been jolned in matrlmony by Rev. Dr. McCreary. M. F. Rohrar, the speclal agent of the Mutual Life, was at Glenwood yesterday paying J. J. Woodrow $2,042, on an en— dowment policy. The telephone company has a gang of men at work now straightening wires, re- moving needles poles and making sundry needed improvements. The small lithographs of Gus Williams, a3 “‘Oapt. Mishler,” has asiriking resem- blance to George Blaxelm, the Maln street boot and shoe man- It will pay you to examine the latest noveltier In mouldings just recelved at Chapman's. O. A. Rogers, 341 Broadway, opens to-day. Ladtes are invited to call. The grand opening at this establishment will take place In about one weok. Ed Daily was the name given by one poor fellow who was brought in for being dronk and for begging for something to eat and drink, He was fined, and a charge of vageancy also lodged against him, There is every assurance of a large au- dience to hear the Bernhard Listeman concert company Saturday at the opera houss. As instrumental soloists they have the reputation of being as fine as any in the land, The county board cf supervisors yes- terdsy let the contract for bullding Dridges in this county for the next year 80 the Oskalooss Bridge Company, whose bid was much lower than that of any other firm. At the state jewelers’ convention held in Des Moines, Mr, Henry Robinson of thie city, was chosen second vice presi- dent, and one of the four delegates to attend the natlonal conventlon to be held in St. Louis in May. Frod, Hanson, who was charged wlth hauliog away dirt from the banks of the creek, has been acquitted, a contractor having sold him the dirt, and hence if any blame was connected with the affair, 1t belonged to somebody else to shoulder. The two snesk thieves glving their names as Johnson and Sulllvan, who have just served a term in jail for snatching a turkey from J.{R. Soyder's store, were arrested sgain yesterday for stesling' a palr of pantaloons from a Broadway saloon, They were sent to jail for five days more. The park commissiovers are consider- lng quite favorably tho opening of a drlveway on the ridge between First and Second strects, provided the property owners will give twenty feet cn each side. This driveway will be from the park to a piece of ground, about two acrer, owned by the clty, which Is now tso'ated and caunct be approached or used. In makiog this driveway it would be necessary to throw a bridge over Kuepher street. The plans for the new rotary jail to be built for this county do not provide for jsilor having sny 0o numerous & family. There sre for the jailor's accommodation on the first floor two rooms,. one for a st ting roow and one for cookiog purp-ses. Two bedrooms are provided on the third floor, which makes quite a climb, 71he juilor’s family will not be very conve- niently sitasted. Single men will now atand a show to get the position, as fow of the family men will desire the place. Prof. Hammond, of the institute for the deaf and dumb, while at New Or leans, met the superintendent of the Nlagara Grape company and became somewhat famliliar with the fact of that wonderfal grape, The other day Prof. Hammond made & purchase of Wells Cook, the speclal agent here, ordering 100 vines for the institate. The old geandmother I getting more and more stupld In her dotsge. The leading editorial put Into her scrap.-book yesterday, appeared as If written by one of her own children, The old lady for- got to credit to the New York Sun, and forgot to state that it was alterwards re- produced in the Ohtoago Tribune, from which it was evidently clipped by the old lady's scissors. The old 'lady would not Intentlonally mislead or decelve her readers, but sho forgrt to put the proper credit to the article, KR = Gaorgo Boulah and John J. .0'Brlen, who were arrostod for having & fight in Motoalt's saloon, are suspgcted of having been concerned ina burglary at Missourl Valley. The quarrel aross over who should carry the few dollars they had in thelr porsesslon, and there was found upon them some ladles’~ jewelry, which the police suspected had been stolen from some store, as the goods were new and still on the cards with price marks at- tached, The question as to whether two’ clty jallers are really needed, besldes the marshal, still agitates some of the alder- When the old jail was ueed for holding prisoners, for police headquarters—for everything In fact, the marshal took care of the jalland looked after what janitor work was done, which, to be sure, wa¢ not very much. The marshal recelved $40 per monthand cer- taln fees, and the office was considered a fat one. Now, bosldes the marshal, two jallers aro employed at 870 a month, making $180 expense in all, besides the fees. But seperate buildings are now used, and the business of the city has In- creased, 1t is clalmed, 8o that more help is required, There are many improvements golng on in the city, and among the most no- ticeable are the bulldings being raised. Dr. Hart's large brick residence on Wil- low avenue; as well as Thomas officer’s resldence have been ralsed five feet. W. P. Aylesworth has been doing thim work, and the successful manner in which he has done it Is In keeplng with the skill shown In raising A. B. Walker's large brick resldence and other bulldings. Mr, Aylesworth has just begun ralsing Low- er’s hotel, on Main street, a two-story brick building 38x40 feet. Ho in also to raiso the brick cottage, No, "819 Sixth avenue, owned by T. F. Hart, as well as Jack Cuslck's residence, No. 1019 Flith avenue, There Is talk, too, of ralsing St. Franols’ academy this year, and the res- idences of J. R. Davidson and James Fralney. Mr. Aylesworth has demon- strated that he can do thls work in the best possible manner, and now there is & big demand for his services, The council committee to whom was referred the petition for the closlng of saloons, had a conference yesterday after- noon with some of the prominent signers of the petitlon, the conference being held at the Y, M. C. A. rooms. It is under- stood that the purpose of the conference was to see If some compromise might not be arranged, so that the city might retaln its revenue and the saloons allowed to run under strict poilce regulations, It is understood that some of the slgners themselves, while not in sympathy with saloons or the drink buslnees In any form, are in doubt about the advisability and practlcabllity of the move, Council Bluffs belng situated as it Is. Some who, at first impulse, thought the problem was an easy one, now begin to see some of its complications, and men who have the| common end in vlew of having men live sober-minded and dolng away with the evils of drink, differ greatly and honestly a8 to the methods to be employed. If consultations and conferences, reasonable talk, and a falr, frank showing of facts on sll sldes cannot result in some wise concluslon, then impulse, passion and prejudice will step into the arena and fight it ont. e Facts worth remembering when you buy Wall Paper: lst.—That Beard, next door to postofice, has the largest stock to select from. 2d—That his prices are as low as. the lowest. 3d—That he Is a practical interfor decorator and employs none but skillful workmen, —— PERSONAL, George ¥, Wright returned yesterday from his western trip. Burglars Visit His Store aud Secare Conslderable Plunder, How.They Worked the Job. Yesterdsy morning it was discovered that some time during the previous night burglars had been through Bliss' milll- nery establishment, The fellows gained anentrance by a rear cellar door, forcing one of the old hinges off, and after get- ting Into the cellar they went up stairs, and finding the door locked which led into the store, they cut a hole through the panel, so that a hand could be reached through and unlock the door by a key left In the lock on the other side. The thieves went through the cash drawer, taking about eight or ten dollars, and helped themselves to some of the stook: just what and how much could not be exactly dotermined yesterday, but what stock was missed amounted to about 8100, there being & quantity of white linen gocds, ladies’ collars, velling, rib. bons, etc., missed by Mr. Bliss. The fellows must have been pretty well qualnted with the sltuation and peculiari- tles of the place, as they made no false motions but took the easlest and safest way of securing an entrance, The door where they gained an entrance is mot many fest trom police headquarters, " THE NEW JAIL.
