G, W, Crofts will preach, he having arcived yes- tordmy. Advertlsing space In the old lldy s scrap-book seems to be going begging. Shs uses five columns each day trying to adverlise hersalf, In the circuit court yesterday the case of Schofield & Cavin against the city was still on trial. This a sult for §3,350, on arseesment certificates, Telephone subscribers should put Jown dowan In their book that No. 130 is now the Creston house, in instrument being put in there yesterday. Every cltizen desirlog the bettering of city affairs should bs on the alert for political echemes, and should promptly cast his ballot to defeat them. Mott Harle's team qecam _frightencd and {ook a run near the fa!r grounds yes- day. Oae of the horsas struck a barbed wire fence and was quite gerlous'y cut. She had been 11l only since Friday last She had been here about two years and was greatly baloved. The faneral will be held Moaday morning. On Thursday night thore was a happy wedding at the Coy house, Jacob Schmidt, the musical barber, being wedded to Mi: Emma Koemler, daughter of the propri tor of the house. Rev. A. Doerfler per formed the ceremony. The Bavarian band was present, and a merry time was bad until early morn. There were many proeents and many hearty congratula- tions. A. P. Johuson, who has a laundry on Broadway, complained befors Justics Shurz yesterday that August Andereon, who owns the next bullding, was keeping a nuisance, Sald nuisance consisted of a half-dozen brazen women to whom An- derson rented the npper part of his bui! ing. The women have heen having very hoistrous times there and Thursday night the rowlng was even worse than usual, and shots, oven, were heard. Anderson was fined $56 and costa and the women wero glven notice to clear out of the bouse within twenty-four hours or they would be pulled, The Globs in its desperation at the proepect of having John Bennott, a stra'ght man, elected as alierman at Yarge, raies the objection that he ought not to hold two offices, that of county treasurer and alderman, It had nothing to say against Vaughsn being mayor and justice of tho peace, of Broadbeck being clty ergineer and county recorder, of Mynster being county attorney snd alder- man, of Troutmsn being eity clerk and olerk of the superior court. In fact al- mcst every democrat lately in office has had two or three offices at one and the sawme time. The democrats should keep still about dual offices, Brooks Roed la a recd that cannot be shaken by the wind, hence the blow cf Vaughan's fictlcn does mot affect him, It scoms quits certsin that if Reed is elected, Vavghan cannot use him and it is absolu'ely certain thet if Shugert is elected Vaughan cavnot tss bim Vavgtan's cnly show then ls to either got Reed to withdraw from the ticket and let 8 Vaoghan demoorat take the place, or get some republican to ran lu- depend:ntly and divide the vote and de- feat Shugart, whom he draads worse than Reed. It roems tba: the little mayor is inasweat box, Ttisn't the mayor's elsc- tion pirticularly, but it seems that hs thinks it is, THE FIRE, DEPARTMENT. Some of The Lav@s Goveraing It Seim To Be Furgottén, An Investigation Threatened, Among the reasons for changing from a volunteer to a pald fire department was the fact that the old volunteer department beoame too much of & political machine, and namerous equabbles aroee, which tended to decrease the efliclency of the orce., Men who were working without compensation could hardly be brought under such diselpline a3 If they were drawing pay for servicos rendered. In making the change an ordinance was pasted, some of the provistoms of which em to ba almost wholly forgotten. Amnng the clauses that will bear repub lishing, and which seem to have become a dead letter, are the follomiog: ““No member of the firedepartment shall take part in any electior: by poddling tickets, cr electioneering in any man- ner.” “No spitituous, fermented or malt liquors shall ke permitted in any engine house or other hoate used by the depart- ment. Aany member found drunk Ihl“ be dischsrged.” **Any ofticer cr member of the fire de- partment negloctiog or refusing to pay a just debt, contrasted during his connec- tion with the department, shall be dis- charged from the service; but no officer «r momber shall ba d(uch'\rged on account of hia religlous or political principlea.” ‘‘Any engineer of firé steamer, or driver of such steamer, hose cart or hook and ladder track, who ehall absent him self from the house to which be is ss- signed, except at auch times as the rales of the department grant him leave, or shall loaf in or about s:loons, or shall fre- quent gambling nous:s, houses of lI fame or other places of low ropute, shall be dis- charged.” 1f one-half the reports that are atloat ora true, there are several of the pro- visions enumerated above which have been broken time and again. There have been a fow instances where a man has been *“laid off” for a few days, but it seems that for such an offcose being drunk the ordinance provides tha‘ the penalty shall ba “‘discharge.” As to the requirement concerning pol- itlcal workings, it is no sacret that the political wires run through and through the department, and no one {8 more in- torested in the coming election than the chief, whoee tenurc of office depends upon whether the men whom he supports gots clected or mot. It is demoralizing to the department to have positlons de- pend upon whether they favor this man or that for alderman, and whether they ate good prophets enough to judge which will be the winning side and get over on that, There are many reports as to cer— tain members of the department uting drink pretty freely, and it seems that there Is in many reepacts too little atten- tlon paid to rules and too lttle discipline throughout the department, The recent racket between Chlef Wal- ters and Charles Nickelson wasa dis gracetul picture In the firs department’s history, and it Is now intimated that an investigation of affairs will be held and the trath got at. 1f tho department is not well disclplined and efficient it should be made g0 at once, and if it is being made a mere play-ground for ward poli- ns it should be changed no less An invest/gation might end in a farce, a3 did the 1nvestigation of the police force, but If everything is all right an investigation would mot hurt the de- partment, and would restore the shaken confidence of many. Among other mattars which 1t would be well tolook intoisthe custom of using the fire department for filling prl- vate cisterns. A good deal of this work is s id to be done, the parties havinga cistern filled paying the fire lads for 1t, and the water-works company gotting its shsre of the money, butthe question arises, how much of this goes into the city tmuury to nelp pay for wear and tear of hose, etci Now thet there has been so much fass made over the conduot of the police, let the committee see how it is with the fire department. o —— Registration Notice. CUNNING NNING CUPID. Coy Conrting Dnn~ In The Time of Small-Pox Quarantmne, How the Guards Were Fooled, It has just been developed that Copid himself took a prominent part in the lat® small-pox ecare, One place which was quarantined, and over which guards were placed to prevent any of the ten persons inslde from com‘ng out, and any of the thovsands outside from coming in, was nelther locked or bolted sgainst Cupld. Among those thus quarantined were two young ladies, and two young men with whom they were acquainted could not stand the deprivatlon of thelrsocicty, and did not. Daring all the time that the house was supposed to be thus strictly quarantined, these young folks not only managed to get togcther for a oocial evening, but also to take walks together, and in fact have merry times, despite the staid guard. The way that the guards were worked were varlous. Somectimes an entrance was galned to the quaran’ined house from the rear, while the guard was patrolling the street in front, Sometimes one of the young men would get the guard into coaversation with his back to wards the houge, or would get bim to vislt some adjacent salocn to get a clgar, while the ctber young man would escort the young ladles out of orinto the house. Now that the small pox ecire Is over and the house thrown _open agaln, the facts have crept out. Had the small pox been eproad, instead of belng smothered, it would bave been so very, very l‘\mu) A wedding bay resulted from this quaran- tine courtship, and as all's well that enda well, the novelty of & courtship carried on right under the thadow of such dread- ed diseass and possible death, will doubt- less be the thome of many a talk around the newly-made fireside of the newly- wedded ones.
