SUNDAY TRAINS Henry Varley, an alieged English divine | To and from Chicago via the Tripartite Alllance Lines of the evengelical order, bas bsen preach- r IEntrteacs ing at the Warren Memorial church in L [ NWIRW L this city fora week. This morning the Commer- cial printed an artlcle from the Glooe. Democrat, in which Varley was referred to as a ‘‘divinity tramp,” and as a fellow who *‘dlvides his time between presching the gospel and peddling obscene litera- The publication created a great sonsation in the Warren Memorlal charch and the followers of the Euglish evangel- ical wanderers have had nothing else to talk about todsy. Mr. Valsy war angry but affected injured innocence, and in an interview he referred most causti- cally to the Globe-Democrat. When atk:d why the attack had been made he said: ‘T sappose it is dus to what T said about that paper during my stay in St. Louls and is not wholiy a sur- prise to me. 1 was in that city some seven weeks since and spent a week there. During my stay I had occasion to allude to the immense amount of criminel mat- ter published in the Suuday lssues of the morning dailies, particularly the Globe- Democrat. They collect everything of the kind they can aud publish whole pages of it. It is hardly fit matter to place bafore the young, s naturally it corrupts by the reading. In one of my discourses I spoke of this, and I suppose 1 kave offended them. ““What Is the ohsceno pamphlat which the Globo-Democrat says yoa have been poddling?” ' ‘The only pampblst which I distrl- bat,” replied Mr. Varloy, “'is my lecture to men. I have given away 90,000, and I never before heard of its being obscene. The substance of it was delivered in 1884 before 3,000 men in Exeter ka'l, London, and has been repeated by special raquest.” “‘When you were in St Louls did the local papers givea just recognition of your work?” ‘The two morning papers gave on!, gnxh]nl accounts. 1 suppose their editors have attacked me because I accused them of publishing in their Sunday edltions all the crime they could rake upin St. Louts, and that 1s a grest deal, for it s the most wicked oiy in Amerlca | would nct be sorry for this attack on me if it only awoke the people to the condi- tlon of St. Louls. I went into the jail while there, T saw tweuty-thres murder- ers in one hall. The condition of thei jail alone causes crime, Half-grown boys, who have only been sentenced for a fow days or weeke, are placed In the same apartments with criminals of the worst and the most degraded types, and they are nntur.]ly contaminated. There are In St, Louis 2,700 nlnouu, and they are constant tources of crime and pollu- tion,” Dariog Mr, Varley’s work in Loul ville he bas aroused much unfavorable comment, He is an arrogant, sifacted, impudent fe'low, with some learning, a little eloquencs, and more cheek than the traditlonal government mule.
