What more con the young lady desire ! THE LATEST GOSSIP sbout the Incoming cabinet is that Sena tor Lamar will be chcsen for the interic It is evident that no nationsl view is taken of the ‘‘eternal fitness of things, Senator T.umar Is & great mon, & lesrned man, a good men and & mest gifted and accomplished statesman, A stat:tmnan rather than a politician, yet none lave & botter know!- «dgs of, or Is a more clcsc student of poiitical economy than Iy he. He isan carnest legislator and at times impetuov but this is physioal. We all know that beis called, and iy, the most echclarly men in the senate. His people, tho Mistissippians, revere him, believe in him and repose theie fall confideace in h'm, and 1 believe the entire soath feel that Seoator Lamar is the man they would select to fill the high poeition «f tecretary of atate, yet would struggle agalnst having him leavo the teva‘e, for who could fill his place there! But Sen ator Bayard s the one chosen for that position From high auathority I have It that DBayard will go into the ocabinet as aecretary of state, and Mr. Lamar will be offered the Interior. Ifhe'll ecept it or notis ancther matter, He is lookipg well phyz- ically, more like the active legislator of elght yoars ago. For the past few years he has heen in wratched healin "and has taken little or no part in active debate. The death of hls wife a fow weeks ago was a tereible blow, and he ssys he haa but little heart in personal honors. Mra, Lamar was one of the most devoted wives and fond mothers it has teen my pleas- ure to meet; a woman of rare culture and accumplishments, and In every sense a fit andftrue companion of her gifted hus- band, Society knew very little of her, as she preferred the cleser ties of home and a few cholce friends. Theloes of such o companion is indeed a great sorrow to Mr Lamar and his family. His young unmarried daughter is with him, a lovely gitl of about 19 years, very like her mother in appearance and lovable traits of character. Senator mar h1s never mingled muchin gay society, 18 domestic in his hab.ts, and is too much of a bock-worm to enjoy par- ties, balls and recepticns. Yet, should he go into the cabinet, he will do the so- cial honors, assisted by l's young daughter, with ¢ 'sa and simple elegance, Senatcr Bayard is more heard of in so- clalcircles. He likes a good dinner, snd keows how it should be cocked. He prides himself upon the art of cookiog terrapin, and is also fond of the'theatre. Last week, while Henry Irving and Miss Ellen Terry were here, he was often seen at the thea're, and gave a box party and a supper afterwards to Miss Terry, his daughters belng of the party. This only shows how well Eogland will fare when he has international affairs to attend {o. While Mies Terry played the part of a charming young lady well, U saw nothing great in her, wishing to call out very marked atten- tlons from our wmost distinguished statesmen, but no doubt she is a beautiful dioner commpanion and understands the att of pleasing, end as the Princs of Wales delights to honor our beautifal women, and bestows favors upon our actrasses, it is very kind and clever in Senator Bayard to show such marked at- tention to Miss Terry. While this dis- tinguished supper was going on at Welk— ere, Willie Walter Phelps, M. C. from the Jerseys, astisted by the Blaineses were dining snd wincing Henry Irving at Willis Walter’s home. So these Eog- lish actors ot only carried away a whole plle of money, but & whole ple of re- nowned attention, enough to furnish him with advertising for years to come.c ON. A Mao Who Wes Made a Cripple for Life by tee suble Fluid, Trial of His Buit for Damages Against the Company. Denver TribuneRepublican. The distrist court was engaged yester day sfternoon in the trisl of the case of Charles Lubber ve, the Colorado Eleciric company, which is ysnerally known as the Electric Light company. The action was for damages fcr Injurics caused to the plaintiff while {1 the service of the defend ant, (ngaged upon work which he wax di. rected to (o, but which was not within ths aeual scope of h's employment, He is by teade a carpenter, and it wes esa carpenier that ho was usually employed by the defendant, Bat cn the 17th day December, 1851, he was directed by Mr. Ruud'e, the manager of the Electric com pany, to go the corner of Fifteenth and Champa sireets and remove an elecirio lamp which was situated there, and which would no lcnger bein use. The lamp wes placed upon & pole at en eleva tlon of about fifteen feet abvove the sidewa'k, and Lubber had to sfand vpon a step-ladder in order to remove it After he had removed the lamp, and was in the act of uniting the cnas of the several wires, 5o as to complete the elec- tric clrenit, and while he had hold of the with each hand, a carrent of electricity was sent through the wiree. Lubter re- celved the full force of the shock, and wa3 thrown backward upon the sidewalk, falling npen his head. He was serlously injured end was taken up in an uncon gcious condliion and removed to his home which was with his mother. He testified that he did not fully re- gain his consclousness until the 10th of January following the Injury, and that ever tinca then he has been subject to cpileptic fits, His hearing is impaired, a1 a-ealso the nervesof his loft cyelid. Wolcoit a3 counsel for the defente. The case was argued bofora the jury last night ata night saeslon. The defense introduced no_testimony of mach weight, but confined their ef- foits t> a fight over the legal and technical points, They claim, with some show of reason, that a suit like the one brovght by Mr. Lubbers cannot ho'd good In law; that corporations cannct always be held responsible for carcless— ness in employes, and that the mansgera of the company were not to blame for the turning on of the current at the time named. The defense presented some strong auihoritles to sustain thess and similar positions. The court, however. partially dissented from the claims of the defense by refusing to grant a non-suit and letting the caze go to a jury on its merits and the arguments of attorneys. Tha jury raturned a verdict in favor of the plaintiff for §5,500. - —— BECK AND MORGAN. A Very Warm |Debate in the United Btates Scnate, During the debatec on the Texas and Pacific forfeiture bill quite a sensation wes created by the tilt between two dem- ocratic scnators, Beck and Morgan, which well foreshadows what will be a frequent oc:urence within the democratic party when it comes into powbr. In the course of some remarke on the bill during the debate, Mr. Beck said he supposed In 1878, when the Thurman Dill was passed, that congress had scourad eoms practical control over the Pacific roade, but he had been mistsken., Now this house bill Is met by & counter prcposi tton. The Reagan bill had been met by a counter proposition, A number of other measures had been up, but had been fooght to the end. This was what the ralroads wanted,. He would not vote againet Mr. Sherman’s amendment and others because he thought it better to have imperfect legislation thea pone at all. Mr. Morgan said ‘the effort of Mr. Beck to impeach the democrats who had opposed the Reagan bill and had adopted an mdependent courss on this bill would not deter him (Morgan) from doing his duty. He had been in the democratic party before ths senator from Kentucky (Beck) enjoyed the privilege of citiz ship in this country. He (Morgan) had been a true and falthfal demccrat and it did not rest with the serator from Ken- tucky to impeach his democracy by such flings as that conveyed by hls last re- marks, Mr. Mcrgan would be found to supporter of the Incoming adminis- tration, aleo, of princlple, if it should be an administration of prinelple, and ae long as the senater from Kentucky he would stand by the democratic creed. He aid not enjoy these declarationsmade at the expense of party associates; they wera not kind, Mr. Beck disclalmed any allution to the sepator from Alabams (Morgan), or m with referencs to the bill under dijy saton rald: ‘1 have never had a wrangy that 1 now recall fn my sixteen yeary servics on this floor, or anywhere else, 14 regard to my public dutles, and I hav never given just eaute for offente to any- one who did no®seck thelopportunity to bring It on to himself by some assump t'on that was not to be crawn from any- thirg 1 had said Tee matter was then dropped and the sonate adjourncd — “That t'red feellng” from which you snfier 8o much, partionlarly in the more ng is entirely thrown off by Hood's Ser saparilla, A DETEC Some Professional Eccrets, “I've grt to lestify in a divoree case next week,’ said a privato detectlse yosterday, ‘‘and I'm’ afraid that the tass will injure my businois; but I'm tuby wnacd, and 1 guess Il have to stand the consequences.” i “In that your lina of burines? “Woll, hardly; but you aee that eatch ing criminals 18 not a8 gocd as trackivg husbands, wives, and young mea. He was paying attentions to another wo- man, and when his wife found it out thers was a scene, and the divorce pre ccedings are the result.” This was a nice little story, but 1t is more than likely that he was drawing very largely on his imsgination for these “facts.” The average young womaa, upon becoming engaged, does not hire a detectlve to follow her young man. ————— No poison in Red Star Cure: derangement of stomash or system. ———— Barbed Wire, New York Herald, Two influences have tenced to main- tain a kigh price cn barbed wire, which in many parts of the country, where etone and wocd are diflicult to obtain, his be- come almost a pecess'ty to the farmers, Theso inflaences are patente, and tariff on wire and wire rods, The farmer have been held by a clcse monopoly, which bas been able to retain fts monopoly through teriff, end which has ‘‘farmed out at exorbitant royalties tha privilege of maklng e of all or of some of the pst- ents on this article.
