There's music in the alr at the county Jail thesa days. Quite an orchestra has been formed among the prisoners, one having a flate, another a violin, another a mouth organ, and stlll another a banjo, With a sheriff with such a musical name Guittar, how can thoy help it! The entertalnment given by the X, Y, Z. club last night was a happy success «espite the coldness of the weather. The young ladies ecem to know just how to arranga and circy out an entertalnment s0 that all who attend are given an enjoy- able evening, and the treasury of the church is helped. Among the sporting men ¢f Council Bluffs is one deaf and dumb young man, who isindoed u curlosity, He can hear nothing that is going cn a% the gambling tables, but is keen-eyed, a fine poker player, and desplte his lack of hearing and speaking, is asslick a gamblor as there is in the city. At the mile race at the ekatlng rink Tharsday night, John Epencter, jr., de feated Henry Scheidle, winning by ten weconds, and making the mile in 4 min- utes and 33 seconds, Johnnis will not therafore have to give op any of his high ly prizxd medals, and still holds the champlonship of Council Bluffs, Another contest {s t> bs held next Weduesdsy n'ght, the distance to be two miles in- stead of one. The yearly report of the Y. M, C, A, is belng distributed among those Inter- esiod in the work, The membership on February 1st, 1884, was only 30, and the number added darlog the year 66; de coas:d 2, loaving the present membership 94, Harry Cartis, tho tecretary of the association, bas certainly done a grand work, and deserves speclal credit for the witdom and enterprise he has thown io waosgiog all departments of the work, Jobhn T, Stewart hes commenced euit aga'nst the clty for 85,000, He claims that the building occupicd by Stewars Bro's* (n Maln s'reet, was bailt gcsord ing to the grade then establithed, and that afcerwards the ¢i y counc | changec * {he yrade and bll.d in 1he strect, so that the €rst floor ¢f the buildiog wes below the s'zeet. The mattcr was breught be- fore the council and that body referred 1t to the elty a‘toraey with power to act, #nd e entered lnt) & contrast to rettle the claim for £1,200. The council since then has refos:d or neglected to pay the £1,200, so Mr. Stewart sues for the full damages clalmed. J. F. Green was the name glven by a fellow who yesterday sneaked a pair of shoes from Pierce's store on Maln strect. The shots were found in his postession and he was sent to jail for five days. He didn't seem to like 1t because he didn't gat twice that amount of free bosrd. Duriog Judge Aylesworth’s absence in Des Moines Justice Tralney hay climbed up apon the wool-:ack of the superior court to dlepose of ‘he city catcs, He had three before him on charges «f being drunk and disorderly. They gave their names as John Olifford, Jack Daly, and W, B. Robinson, and were cach fined a doubledose, Mr., Lerche, the erring editor, a day or two ago secured names cnough as bondsmen to have secured his releatc, but the slgners learning that Mr. Geise would not promiss to drop the prosecu- ticn, soratched thelr names off. There was also an Intimation made by Mr. Cresilann that if Lerche was released on bail on this charge, he would file an in- formation snd have him arrested for some queer work in regard to a check purporting to be signed by Croesland a yearago, lLerche will probably remain in Limbo fcr a time, until his friends can investigate further. As was t> ba expected some dissatls- faction has arisen among the architects, on acconnt of the adoption of certaln plans for the proposed new court houte. One of the architicts who sent plans for exhibltlon befora the bcard, but who was not here in person, now claims that his plans were keptin the dark, and given no fair show. The architzct has been misinformed for his plans were ex hibited fully, and talked over a good deal. In fact, ancther architect who was here with plans, claimed that this first man’s plans were s'olen from his. The fir:t complalning architect has been informed of this charge, and these two will now probably devote their time to quarrelling with each other instead of complalning further against the board. L — Afine crzan, half price, at Beard’s wall paper store, next to postoftice. ——— GUILFEATHER'S FEATHER. He Wins His Damage Suit Against the City, and Gers A Judgment for $300, Yesterday morniog tne css3 of Guil- feather against the city was given to the jury, and at the end of an hour anda half the jury rcturnad a verdict In his favor for $300. Guilfeather’s claim was for damages caused by the overflow of Tn- dian creek, he claiming that his land and garden spot would not have thus suftered had it not been for certain improvements made by the ctty. C. R. Scott, who ap- peared for the plaintiff, in arguing the case before the jury, gave the city gov- ercment & feartal “‘turning over,”’ deal- ing out sarcasm without mercy. He paid special attentlon to ths mayor, and de- clared that this horribie way of dolng business wou'd be kept up forever unless the mayor was removed by impeachment or by some kind providence. He siald he did not wish the msyor any ill, aud would not barm a halr of his head, but tha® if ke saw the mayor sitting on a can of dyna- mite, to which was attached a fuse, and he (Scott) had a match in his hand, he feared that the devil might tempt him to touch it off, ltkewise attacked, until the jury were better posted in the present administra. tlon than on the real facts in the case. These who have hesrd Ccl. Scot: in- his lightning thrusts of sarcasm, can easily imagine how ho flayed thot¢ whom he held respensible for the damage done to his cllents’ property. He Succeeds in Gett the Aadt tionl Appropriation for the Coun- cil Blufts Postoflice Building, Yestorday afternoon the glad news reached the city that Congressman Pusey had succeeded in getting the bill passed by the bouse making an additional §$100,- 000 appropristlon for the government bui'ding hera. The news caused general joy, because it sccmed equivalent to bav- ing the money In band. there seeming no doubt but that the bill will readily pass the sapate, and be approved, As ls generally known the orlgival ap- propriat on was $100,000, so that this new appropriation will secure for Council Bloffs a 8200,000 government building This will not be tco large or expeosive a one for the importancs of the locaticn, the amount of business done here, aud to meet the fulure demands, This additional appropriation will cause no materisl change in the foundation already made, The main chsnge wi'l be in the superstructure, which will now be built of etone instead of brick. The building will go right ahead, and as a bullding enterpriss wi'l be a great help to the clty in msny wavs PEgsuNAL —_— James O'Neill and wife me at the Ogden house. That isa query easier atked than answered, Tue Ber man tried t) find out yestor- day, and got the unsatisfactory informa tion that they were worth from seventy five to eighty cents on a dol'ar, it any body wanted to buy any, but that no one wanted to buy. It seems that all the demand there Is for them is in cases where men want to pay their taxes, and buy up a few warrants at a discount to turn them in, but no one seems buying for apeculative purposes. At the banks the inqulry rcvealed the fact that they would pay nothing for them, They had been buying a few, when customers wanted any, and left orders with them, bat they did not want to buy any them- selves at any prce. One msn who had some warrants was informed that he could depoeit them as collateral, and get a little cash loaned bim, but there were no buyers, At one of the banks it was learned that a fow warrants had boen bought for 75 cents and offered for ealo at 80 conts, bat with no takers even at the cost, 76 cents. One prominent taxpayer eald ho hea beon buying aboat §100 werth, but had enough, and even mcre than he could use now to pay bis taxes, and hence would buy no more. He had paid 80 cents for what he purchased, Some days ago another prominent taxpayer left word with the city auditor tbatif any- body wanted to sell warrants to come to him and he would pay 75 cents for a few. Several of the employes of the city were told of this chance to well, but they all rofused, saying they wonld not take less than 80 cents, One broker. who deals in securlties of all sorts, told Tre Bee man that he wou'd not pay over 60 cents for warrants, snd wo'd not go across the street to get any at that price. It seemy that there is need of a radical change in the management of city finsn- cisl affalrs, The people will socn be called upon to select thrae new aldermen. In vlew of the present state of the city's oredit, as shown by the way its paper stands In the market, or, rather, stands out of the market, the voters should see to it that good, clear-headed, clean: handed men are chosen, who will devote thelr wisdom and honesty to clearlng up the present tangle. Tae Bee has already shown, from the clity officials’ own figures, that under the precent mansgement, as shown by the records to date, there will ba twice as many unpald warrants outstanding at the close of this year as there werson the opening of the year. Taxpsyers shoold look thete facts squarely in the face, and ecek a remedy by selecting wise men st this election, AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. How Its New President Takes With the Educational Men of the State. The readers of Tne Bee will remem- ber the rccant meotlng of the etate teachers’ assoclation, and the seneational features of the elecfion of a preeident for tbat body; how Leigh Runt final y succeeded in getting elected, but when storm was raised aboui the peculiar methods sald to be used by some of bis friends In securing this result, he quickly dropped the laurel thus gained. In spite of the expremsion of feeling on the part of leading educational men of the state, both as gathered in convention, and as individuale, the regents of the state sgri- cultural college, on the nomination of tho editor of the Des Moines Register, clected Hunt as president cof that institution. This actton was a great surprise in educational circles, and has called forth many ex- pressions of diseatisfaction. His friends 8re 0% chsrged this timo with sending in any excorsicn trains of pretty tchocl maidens to secure his eleotion to this tlon, but the alection causes hardly less diesatlefact'on, and the quiet mutter- ings are breaking out publicly. Asa symplo of the feeling the follow- ivg appears in the Mason ity Express, In the educational department edited by Superlntendent Kl nefeiter, of that county: . There is a clear and well defined notion in this part of the s:ate that Leigh Hunt, of Des Mciner, has been elected Cax- VASSING AGENT for the State Agricultural college, with the title and salary of pres. ident, and that the res! president of the college is editing a paper in Des Moines. There secems to be no disposition cn the part cf those who understand the titua- ton to find fault with the arrangement farther than to regret that the two - s'- tions could not be kept separate, and that to secure this result it was necessary toresort to very questionable, not to say dlshonorable, means. While it would be very easy to sy many things in tidicule ¢f the absurd ac- t'on of the board of regents, we do not feel like saying them, It Is too sexlons a matter when one of our leading educa- tional state institutlons is plac:d under the charge of a man whese methods the great boay of the educational workers of the state, thess who have made the state what it is to-day, educationally, have no respect whatever., But enough sald for this time, — — Real Estate Transters.
