The milltary aathorities of Omaha arc awaiting with ssme degree of interest the action of congresy In granting appropria- tions aeked for and needed, to place In re palr the buildings and barracks at the fort. For thrie years past, appropriations for this purpose speclally detailed in the request, bave been asked for by Gen. Howard, and for three years the con gressional committee has reported ad versely to the granting the desired sum, Lest fall, in accordance with estab- lished usage, the lscal authorities made up en itemized estimate of the appropria- tions destred for the coming year. This document is now in the hands of the écn. gresslonal committee, and wi'l, no doubt, be very shoitly reported and acted upcn Whetherit wil meet with the fate of kiodred requests of cther ycars remains to be seen. The improvements which ara contem plated, and for which appropriaticns have been atked, sra not many. Neverthe- less, a3 Col. Mason said yesterday, **To mike Fcrt Omaha a full regimental post will requira the expenditure of at loast $100,000. The bulldings of the Fort are old, shabby, and not atall in keeping with the imporfance cf the post. Two sets of oflicera’ quarters are needed bad- ly, and, rightly, cvght to be built of brick, Instead of wcod, as were those of Inst year. Then again, while three of the tets of barracks are faicly good, the other two sets are fast decaylng, and should be replaced. Another itsm of ¢xpenditure ought to be for gun-sheds for the ariiliery. The od plan of using tarpaulins to cover the can- non will do very well in timo cf war, but uot of peace. Gun sheds should be erect ed at once, aud, I believe, would effect a great saving In better preeerving the artillery. Besldes these iteme, thers are others of smaller nature, but I beliove an appropriation of 100,000 will fully equip the post.” ——— January Mortality, The report of the city physician for the month of January has becn officially presented.
