Andrew Swin was yestorday sentenced to five days in jail by Justice Schurz on a charge of vagrancy Andrew was hot because the judge did not make it ten days. The official preclamations about clean- tog alleys, ote., are being loadea ready to fire at the people at the first indications of & thaw. As In other years they will doubtless prove blank cartridges. If the new city jall Is nct fixed up protty eoon the old jokes about the old calaboose, with men falling asleep, and and tumbling out, ete., will be revived, the new jail seems little improvement over the old one. The lecture of Capt. Seeley in Masonic hall next Tueeday ovening ehould be largely attended, not only because an interesticg lecture is assured, but chicfly becauee the lecture is for the relief fund of the G. A. The rumor yesterday that a man named Scott had been thrown down s'airs by some glrls on lower Broadway and fatally injured secms to have grown out of the fact of his havirg becn drunk and fallen down afairs, caus ng some slight injurics, and rendering him insensible for a little time, Frank Jackson, who was arrested for stea'ing part of a harness from Weather. by's stable, was yesterday sentenced to ten days in jall. On being shown intide the prisoners ree- goized him and with a shout of *‘Hello, Crow,” they eclzed him and carrled him to the rear in triumph, Thoy know him better by the name of Crow than that of Jackson, City Marshal Guanella isa very modest man, bt he lefs bis modesty at home, or somoewhore clse, when he charged the city $25 for superintending fhe removal of the little building next to the Coy house, The bill for moving the bullding was §:0, and the marshal wanted $25 for superin tendiog it. Paul railway., Hes lie has been trying for three weeks to ge' the police committee to give bim an In Aestlgaticn, so as to clear up his record, but was unable t get sny Learing c1 any verdict, He thercfore quit fooling around tylng to get the committee to meet, and went to reilroading. He says he does not have {o give up any part of his earn- ings to the superintendent In order tc kecp his place, nor divide with the yard master for any instructions he may get from him. 1In fact he breathes free, and says everything is sunshing now. In the coss of Mitchell va Kineaird in the eircnlt cour:, the jury returned a ver dict in favor of the defendant. The case was a peculiar one, Sult was commenced on an old note of €200, on which Inter est hiad accumulated until the total of principal and intcrest was $300, The plalntiff sued out a writ of attachment and Kincaird's store was clcsed from 9 o'clock one evening untll 8 o'clock In the morning, when bonds were given and the stock released, The defendant claimed that he had bLaen ureatly damaged by t4as belng closed up, and his credit de- stroged, and the jury decldcd that the damage amounted to $300, which made an even offset to the amount of the note and interest and threw costs upon the plaintifl. 1t was the Intention cf the jury togive the d:fendant a verdist of §50 above the 8300, but by a failure to sign the verdict In the right place this judge ment was 105 entered up. The Vincents Fcem To Enjoy Criti- cising Better Than Being Critic'sed, To the Editor of the Bre, Tanor, Ia Dean Sin:—1In your fssue of the 16th yourselt or some writer who om'ts his ‘b, 18, 1885 signature, puts on quite s felling of in sulted modesty from reiding the laet iesuc of the Noncenform'st, and think we have lost all the milk of human kindness evor possessed. We might remind you here that the forage In the socisl pastures hereabouts have {uraished li tle of thatgrade that tends to reduce and generate that artic'e, It being principally of the Ohristian order. But you think we forget that some |eople ditfer with us and are yet Chrlatians from honest motives Certainly we recognlze the latter fact, but you or your correspondent ovidently overlcok the , difference between & fact and a belief, 1t is no one's belief that the non con, ridicules or shows up with- out mercy, but what is set up as a basis for that belief, Bat how isit with our Christian friends, can you cr anyone go into any crthodox chireeh, to-day or fato the colitmns of the Christlan press, and hear or see the opinlons of a freethinker or an agnostic referred to with the least dopree of respeot! We shall te only too glad to publish the just instance; but they arc sneered at, lied about as compris- ing the leading and most numcrous in mates of our state prisons and insane asylums, when official statistics gathered ths past year show that when there is one freethinker of the criminal class thero we M Strect Crossing, Yesterday morning Jake Rogers hada close call, and made cleser connections with one train than he ever cares to again. He left the Paclfic house with oneof his herses to catsh the Rock Island train, and lad only twelve minutes in which to get there. There was one pasenger in the 'bus and the horses were made to fly. In crossiry the tracks on Main strect a switch engine struck the vear part of the 'bus and puehed it along about eight fect, smashing it but a little, however, one window being broken and a wheel damazed by the collision. Mr. Rogers says ho did not see or hear the engine appreaching, and the first he knew the encine struck the 'bus. 1t was a most fortunate escaps from a fatal acol- dent. PERSONALL 1. C. Arc these facts t> be kept back through fear of, offending a fow who have been taught to believe that if they read such things they will be cast fnto eteraal torment! No, sir, that is not our rale. If the facts as presinted in history and revelation free from orthodox con- tamination tell us thet Christlanity is not what wo liave seen taught to believe it is there is the gag rule to bo applied to those who believe so? While the Lord clothes paupers whooceupy the pulpitsover this land are relterating their sterotyped forgerles as the word of God and con- demning to the vilest perdliion here as well as hercafter those who dare think ditferent to ssy nothing of utteripg their thoughts? How much respect has the average Protestant for the forms and rituals of the Catholics? Do you ever chide them for lack of respect? But whatarethe facts? Inthelast issue of the Non. Con. thera is not to ba found in the entlire editorlal columns the first word of disrespect cr ridicule for the lonesty of belief of any person or per- eous, but ths edlitors and correspondents units, as they ever shall, in showiug to those whom we believe sre being duped and cowed into silent submiseion to man- made forms, that if they will rise up and allow the sunlight of common sente and honest reasoning into their ‘‘sln-sick eouls” they will arouse the native man- hocd and bear their own sins, and not pay a high fizure for having them turned over on an innocent imaginary being. We ack the Bek if it can point toa secu- lar or relligious journal anywhere that allows those who differ from the views of its editors as wide an expressicn as does the Non Conformist. Were the Ber to publiech the views of a pronounced freethinkers upon the authencity of the seriptures and the “‘vicarlons atonement” would the clergy at'empt t> snswer it other then in ths pulptt, denouncing you and your paper #5 usfit to be appreached, even witl a pair of tongs? 1ls that bring- ing up the facts backed by unb'ased his- tory and argument to_ Gisprove the poei- tions taken? That, Mr. Editor, is not our experienco of how chrlstians gener- ally work. We hope that you will correct the s a'e- | ment meade in your paper some weaks ago that we had suspended, and befcrs you mentiony the tearcity in the milk market in this v ty sgain, we trast you will kindly point to where we can ot & supply In” the other camp, whose watered artlcle you have ehown sach an interest in preserving frem wordly gazs. Thanking you for thus favoriog us with space for & reply, I am yours truly, Vi Tz Bee has no time orspaceto digcuss religion with the Vincen's, The thous- ands of protests lately filed azainst the unhappy expréssion “Rum, Romanlsm and Rebellion,” skowed that the public demauds that the Catholic religion shall bo treated fairly and reepectfully. Ivis no less time that Protestaniem is likewise entitled to the same treatment., Two wrongs do not make a right, and the only cxcuse the Vincents give is that “‘the other fellows called them names first The Vincen's could not have read their own_paper carefully if they *‘found no words of disrespect or ridicule for the honesty of the bellet of sny person.” One of the Vincents himself indulges in ridleule of the lowest cracr of some Methodist revival mectings being held nea: there. It msy be that he conslders all who took part hype- crites and knaver. 1f not then honesty of belief shall entitle them to some bat- ter treatment than a shower of slarg The cther cclomus are equally full of such exprzesions as thesa: “The Chrle- tian rellg on must go; the two greatest paupers of the universe ‘‘goddlemity and General Grant must go.” *“The singing of old Caristians sounded like a calf bel- lowing in a tin bath tub”"—*'they howled to Jeeus to coms right now dear Lord. ah,” etc etc, snd many more, even worse, might be giyen.
