As a keen-looking business man, with bis hat worn on the nape of his neck, was standing on Clark street, Chicago, asimple, gawky-looking country lad of 19, with a big envelope in his hand, and his month and eyes wide open, came sauntering along, looking anxiously at all the signs, which he was apparently spelling out. The business man being naturally kind-hearted, and desiring te do afriendly turn to a stranger, said tc the boy : “Hi, sonny, what are you looking for? Let me see that letter.” “Now, I can’t let you have that let- ter; there’s bonds in it,” said the boy. “but p'haps yon can tell me where Mr. Smith lives around lere. The boss told me the number, but I've forgotten it, and the letter has got bonds in it, and so Lain't to give it to anybody but him.” “Why, I've been waiting for you this half hour,” said the keen business man, as his face brightened up; * waitin you to bring me those bonds whi bonght of What's-his-name.” “Be you Mr. Smith?” said the boy; “well, now, I'm glad I met you, because 1'd clean forgot what was the numl er where the boss said yon lived, and I wouldn't liked to go back without {ind- ing you; it would have looked as if I was careless.” With these remarks the lad took out a big envelope marked *J. Smith present,” in the upper corner “$3,500 U. 8. 6-20s,” and in the lower corner, “Qommission due, $5. Please remit by Learer. That’s all right, sonny,” said the keen-looking businesg man, as he bauled out a scantily-furnished purse, gve the boy a $5 bill and a quarter, and said: ‘' There, sonny, that quarter is to reward you for your cleverness and fidelity,” and, putting the envelope in his breast pocket, he walked leisurely round the corner, ran to Dearborn street with the speed of a deer, skipped lightly round to Madison, and, {.\‘niling a car, was whirled away at a comparatively light- ning speed. Not till he had reached Union Park did he draw the precious | envelope from his pocket, and, with the remark, “Pray heaven they are not registered!” tore it open, He then found that the envelope contained & copy of a Chicago paper, which he could have purchased at the office for b cents. Meanwhile the simple country Jad, en- tering & beer saloon in the vicinity of the Bherman House, absorbed a beer, salted away the $5 bill with seven othen in his pockc!rbonk and, with the k, “The fish is bmugvery numer: ously to-day!” took another big en- velope from his pocket, and once more sallied forth in search of a keen-look: ing business man, e —— Youth. There is nothing like youth. The sunshine streams upon the flowers. The blood mshes wildly through the veins, The air is full of music, and echoes of happy laughter are borne on every breeze. All" the world seems wrapped in golden mist, and hope, & white-winged angel, shines in the rosy heaven of the future, For age, the rustle of the dead leaves! For sorrow, the wail of the autnmn wind, the ead November twilight, and the lonesome splashing of the rain| What have age and sorrow to do with life? Let them thrust away their doleful gloom—while for youth aud beauty, and love and mirth, the silver bells ring, the wine sparkles, aud the earth is strewn with roses— William Winter, erring, keg, 1G0@1 €0 trout, per | Railwav Time Table.
