The men thus called together for counsel and in- vestigation are men who stand well, and have the confidencs of the people, and if both sides of the affair could be fairly pre- sented to them their decision would doubt- less met the public mind at rest, and if after hearing all the facts they should personally endorae th actions taken, 1t would do much to restore public confi- dence; bat a brief exprte investigation must be very unsatisfactory to such a committee, and should a dict be rendered by them, must necessarlly be unsatisfactory to the public. It seems strange that the presence of such a committee in the city and their mission should be kept eccret, if there was a desire to have an honest, full and fair examinatlon of the Institution. It is also strange that not a Council Bluffs business man was added to the commit- tee, and that such men as Rey. Mr. Har- tis, of Omsha* and Rev. The Reasows for Laying Officer Brooks Off Duty—Another Po- licemsn Obarged With Disturbing the Peace, The police troubles still continue, and the weeding out process ssems t> be a hard one. The ques ion has been asked frequently, why was Officer Brooks laid oft the foree? Tue Bek, in hunting up the causes, learned that the nature of the charge was disobedience of orders, the defa'ls of which appear about as follows: Last Sunday night Brocks was off duty, and, althoogh the capteia had issued orders that none of the polies force, even when off duty, should visit the eer garden and Sunday night dance held thore, Brooks slipped up there and was having a merry time, when a woman was charged, by “another woman and & man, with having stolen a breast pin. It is clalmed that Brooks with the accusers took the woman into a room and thera sear:hed her, it being claimed that she had the stolen pin hid- den in her bos m. They did not find the pin, and the accused woman made a row about the matter, which caused the officer to be laid off duty. Another litt'e bit of sensation along the same line was the arrest yesterday of J. T. Hurley, who was lately laid off duty for ten duys, and whose resignation {s in the hands of 1he mayor, who re fuses to eccapt it until the inve: committee get through charges pendiug 1t appears Hurley waa yesterday in Wm., Lautrop's saloon, and a lively dispute arose about shaking dice, which caused Lsutron to complain of Hurley for disturbing the peace, and Officer Cusick ercorted him to head- quarters. The affair was eettled up fioally. Just what will be the next chipter in the history of ths police force, it is bard to sy, bu’” the repu'a’iin he made by the foic)as a whole, makes | rather hard on those « fli sers who do try to do their duty and 9 it well.
