Braca The Corioe Told by Mr, There 1 been considerable talk about the ¢ mite cartridges which were found in tho Thaysr sters house a few days sin Mr. E. Zabriskie, tho assignee of G, D. Thayer, called at the Bie office yestorday and gave a co:- rect version of the affale, He says that he took poescssion of Thayer's stock on the 22d of November, Among other things were a lot of druge, and Le ssnt them up town to adrug house. In lcoking over ths stock the druggist found three cascs of dyunamite oattridges. In the three cases wers abeut 1,000 cartridges, or about 300 pounds ot the explosive. The druggi returned tho dynamite to Me. Zabriskie, and he had it teken to the river azd damped ubder the ite. The etuff was sbipped from somewhere in the cast to & mining company in Colorado, and as the company did not receive it, it was shipped back to Omaha for storage. Tha boxes ware plsinly marked posash, Tho citizsns of Omaha mey woll con- gratulats themselves upcn their nerrow escape, for had the stuff exploded it would have broken every pane of plass in the oity, and would doubtlss have torn dowa several bulldings. e A BURGLAR IN LIMBO, A California Burgler Caught in New York and on His Way Back to the Golden State, ] Yeatorday's train from the east brought into this city Sheriff Crowley, of San Franc'sco, havieg in charge a burglar red McMaullen, who he had captured in now & in diverting the attention of thoe logislature from the reel iseue—rail- road leglalation Ho boils over with aarcasm about Van Wyck and by a ekill ful manipulation of the despatokes wukes out that Van Wyck is a com- mocious 255, Ho has along erticle in Sanday’s Journal on the sabject of Van Wyck's position on the inter-state com. moros bill; alleging that Van Wyck is a New Yorker and is leglalating for New York farmers ngainst Nebrasks farmera --all b cauze Van Wyck favored Siater’s amendment prohibiting raliroads from charging more for a ghort haul than for a long one. Tha rallroads'are half scared to death for fear such a law—elther stato or nat'ozal—may be enacted, in which event their power to build up one man and to break down another would be broken. The idea that the railrowds shoald not charge rat¢s commensurate with the distance hauled is nonsens:, A STRIKING INSTANCE where they do not is given by a wostern senator, who says that at the small towns in Dawson, Lincoln, Keith and Cheyenne counties the Union Pacific charge the pecple more, per ton, for Wyoming coal than the coal deilers of Omaha ask cf your citizens. At Sidney, Nob., 450 miles west of ('maha, coal is as dear a3 at Omaha—coal that was hauled through Sidney by the Union Pacific The scnate committee to investigate what is necessary in the way of legislation to prevent exto tion &c., should go a step fu ther snd inv: stigate another question: What plan is adopted by the sta'e board of assessment to ar.ive at the vilue of railroad property in this stateand whether any additional legislation is necessary or not. Mr. Sawyer, editor of the Democrat, says that a year or two ago the state boatd of assessment pub a valuation of $ por acro upon several hun- dred acres adjoining this city or lying wholly within city limits, and then a8 uow, covered with the machine shops, round houses, depots, et , etc., of the B. & M —lands worth $500 per acre if aull in its original conditions Such appralsemoents AMOUNT TO ROBBERY and ought to be thown up if they exist. Mr. Calhoun, the confederate licuten- ant, is pregnsnt with jokes at tho ex- pense of Mr. Rosewater, cancerning the Ber's attitude on railroad legislation and 18 urying very hard to convince the mem- bers that Mr, Rosewstr is a very harm- lens sort of crank and that tho best thing to do is t> pay no attention to the Bk hut go along and vote 1hs way the rob- birsriquest, But the more wary among the law:-makers bave set to thinking; they riason thusly: Wby ls it that so few of thore who st hare last eezslcn got ok this time? A very pertinent ques- tim and one that each member may avk himself every day. These railccad or- gans are very busy just now frying to throw dust in the eyes of the legislature in order that the plunderers may'suc: © od, A SHARP GAME. Two Fellows Make a Haul at Leslie and Morrell's Drug Store, Sanday morning sbout 2.30 o’clock two young fellows, one white and the other colored, drove to Leslie & Morrell's drug Teft their horss standing in front of the storo and went inside Mr. Leslio, the man who way awakened, had to go be- hiud the prescription case and left the two fellows standing out in the etore. Whils he was putting up the medicine ho_had bis sasplolons aroused and in- quired who the medicine was for. The two tellows evaded his question snd did not glve him any answer, After he had 148 the prescelption he returned to the tront pert of the store and the colored man had gore out and was then 1 the eleigh, He sgiin ssked whoit was for snd was told that it was for a party down oa Thirteenth sireet, This morniog he tound that a box of o'gws, a fine paper weight and & lot of perfumery hal been etolen.
