It is claimed by him that he picked up his chain, which hs had had {o use In bringing the prisiner to the jai!, and which lay near the money referred 1o, and that if Mrs, Schontz and her caughtars saaw him pick up anything it was the chain instead of a bill. The cace referred to was the arrest of Robert Allszcod, whoso hema is ia Brownsville, Neb. There have been many strange ramors about the way this young man was used while here, aside from the charge made sgainst Officer O'Brien, In it fs repocted that the youpg man quite a little amoont of money with him when he ocame here, and that his only offense seemed to be that of getting a little too much Coun- cll Bluffs whisky into his stomach, but that before he got out of town his money had melted away, his watch was shoved up and he had to give a porsonal note beside, all this to settlc numerous cases brought against him, ail growing out of one {ransaction, various charge, differing technically, being brought sgaipss him. The wily financier having laid his p'ans for the watering of the stock by a process of reorganization, sent to those gentlemen and told them that he thought lie could get them a purchaser for their shares on the Pacific const, and fina'ly ne- g tated the sale to a supposad third party. Ths death of {he Kal of Ayleeford, which Is announced, cloves a carecr that Fas been anything but a successful or As ths hair of the Ayles- ford estates this young msan cacly in life took » conspicuous position smong the royalty and nobili'y of Engleni, He was a companton of tne Prince of Wales in must of his youthful escapades and nc- companied that worthy to India, On his return Aylesford was married to one of the most besutiful and amiable young ladies in the kirgiom, the daughter of a member of periiament not of the nobil- ity. For a time, the young earl absn- doned his evil assoclates, but he raturned to them again, His wite then fell under the influence of the disreu‘abls Mar- quis of Blandford, now the Duka of Merlborough, and finslly eloped with him to Parie, liviug with him there for years a3 hia wifa. This and financial misfo.tune seem to have sobered Aylesford. He brought suit for divorce and wonld have been given an unqualified decree if his own record could have been made to_appear less repulsive An order of separation wis granted, and Aylesford was enjoined 1o pay his wife a sum of money cach yeacso long as she refrained from *‘molesting” him. After this unhappy scandal, his great csiate passed into the hands of a conservator, and taking an annuity of $50,000 the earl came to _America broken in health and spitit Presently he pucchased a ranch of 40,000 acres in Texas, but returning to England he found that a still more painful humiliation was in sto-e for hnm. Hiswife had a son by the Duke of Marlhorough whom she had dubbed Lord Guernsey, a tltle righttully belonging t> the Ayles- ford family aud worn usually by pros- pective heirs to the earldom, He began an action against her for ‘'molestation,” and, after a trial which did more than anythiog else of recant years to show the utter infarwy of the Englich nobility, the court held that her action in calling her son by that title came under that head, and that she was no longer entitled to re- ctive an annuity fiom her late husband. Thrown then upon her own resources she disappeared in Paris, The earl of Aylesford visited England a fow months ago te make some arrange- ments for the csra of his two more than motheriees children, and returning to this country he announced that henceforth this would be his home. He built a comfortable house on his great Texas ranch and lived there like avy other cattla rais r,surrounded by the rescless cowbeys and rengers who were a'wagshis friends and with whom he seemed ever at ease, He banished him- selt deliberately from the home of his ancestors and apparently seated with dis- ipstion and broken with sorrow cought forgetfulness in the wild, free life of the border.
