Ho has already & batter position for him, in some respects at least, than that of judge of the distric court, Sin and Unbellef, At the Opera hoosy yesterday Rev, A, K. Bates preached ay fellows: You will find my text in the 3rd chag ter of John, and 16th verse, ¢ For God a0 loved tho world that He gave His only begolten Scn, that whosoever be- lieveth on Him, should not perieh, but have everlasting life.” Tharo is no object deater to a parent'’s Foart thana son. This is partleularly tho cave if it happers to bo an only aon, or #n ooly child, end whatever occurs to that son—eepecially if it be trouble, dsnger, or death—affects the hesrt of the parent. 8o when we read that God so loved the woild, that ke gave his only begotten Son fcr i% salvation, it means that his love was immenso and profound. I want to cal! your attention first of all to the fuliness of the vorse chosen for my text. In it will be found, porhaps, more Chrlstian theology than will bs found in any other verse cr pasago of scripture. It embraces the doctrine of the trinity, the doctrine of God’s banevolence, the doctrine of God’s grace, the dootrine of God’s moercy, the doctrine of God’s pro- posed way of salvation, the doctrine of future punishment, and the doctrine of Immortality, This is a verse upon which more gormons have been preached than any ather verso in tho scripture, and is as dificult to comprehend, as far as in. telligent exposition is concerned. Let mo call your attention to tho mat- tor of our condemnation as here taught, In tho first place tho statement is present and not future, According to scripture, ho that belisveth not is condemned al. ready. Tha which ehall occur after a whilo fs simply ths final termination of the sentence based upon a judgment already past. So it became clear in the eye 88 overy intelligent thinking mar, that he that believeth not s condemned, Condemnation is based upce anbelieving and not simply on sin. If it were only upon sin, we might all of us have been equally involved, A man who is o sinner, and at the same time a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as the son of God, is endeavor- ing to put away the iniquities of his life, and the result is that God makes a vast difference between him and the man who smns because of his unbelief. All over this city, perhaps in this very ccngrega- tion, there ars men and women, who are condemned, not only because they are sinners, but being sinners, they will not believe in Chriat. You may find a man who is to all ap- pearances respectable, moral, upright, full of integrity, and worthy of admira- tlon. However, if he Is an unbeliever in the Son of God, the man in condemned equally with the man that lies in the gut- ter, equally with the man who opposes God In every act of his mind, body and soul. A manmsy esy, “I do believe in thy Tord Jesus Christ,” and yet refuss to accept Him, when the light ‘}u clear before him, this is an evidence that he is under condemnation. God holds 'every man accountable for his sine, Accord- ing to God’s own word, ‘The soul that sinneth, it shall die,” no matter what it hes been before. : People may cry that they have been surrounded with sin, and adversity, born ininiquity; and that it was impossible under the circumstances snd surround- iogs to refrain from committing a few trivial wrongs, and that it is unfair that they should be vlsited with such an im- mense punishment for sach a slight offence. The fact is that God does not guage punishment by sins alone, but by companied by grizzly beards. Thers were no services in the Congre- gational church ; yesterday. It is ex- pected that there will ere long be a reg- ular pastor in the pulpit, Rev. Mr. Croft, of Sandwlich, Ill., having been called to the posltion, aud having accepted the call. Itis claimed that tramps are making a free lodging place of the house owned by Mr. Doty in Streetsville, and vacated by |him when the man Loveless came down with tho small-pox. The house had not been thoroughly disinfected when the tramps began to sleep there, and if some of them do not catch the dis easo they are all extremely fortunate. There was a blg gas leak discoverad on Broadway eoast of Main street. Men sins accompanied with unbelief, which is one of the greatest—I might say the greatest sin, and cause of sin, God’a mercy {8 no broader than his justice, As he is infinitely merciful, 8o he is infinitely just. Unbelief means simply this: That Chirist, the Son of God, is oftered to me, but I shall not accept Him. The man who saya this makes Christ an impostor and God a liar, because he denies that Christ is His gon, when He declares that He is. As God 80 loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son for our sal- vation, He expects us to take into consid eration that fact and decide whether to accept or reject Him, and become child- ren of God, e —— PERSONAL, Sheriff Dan Farrell was in the city yester- day. were sot at work taking up the pavement and digging through the frozen earth to the main. The gas leaked insuch quanti- tloa that the pick striklng a stone and causing a spark set tho gas on fire it blaziog up to quite a height, This oc- curred several times. The job of stop- ping the leak proved a hard one, and rather exponsive. The Shenandoah Post says the mad dog is abroad in the land agsin. A. M, Nable’s dog went mad near Riverton on ‘Wednesday and struck out for town. All the doge in Riverton have been kill- ed. Four cows are tied up. Chas Jack- #on, eon of the hotel keeper, was bitten, but sucseeded in killing the dog. Jack- ®on went to try the virtue of a ‘“‘mad stone'’ on Friday but the stone failed to “gtick,” It is thought that his clothing prevented the virus taking hold. A Conzeil Blafs Medinm Hes a Com- ical Scauce, e Departed Spirits Prove to be Liv ing Ones, The little town of Tabor has lately been & gocd deal stirred up of late by & serles of spiritualistic inveatigations aud searces, Tho editor ¢f the Nonconformist, H. Vincent, has been interested in theseand he has made public some relations which have proved interesting, at least to the readers of the Bre, Now comes an interesting etatement from M. Groves with J, M. Ewell and Edward Harris a8 witneeses, which is cqually reneational, but not so favorablo to spiritualiam as the oshers, They claim that they attended a searco at tho residence of Mr. Vincent and there met Mrs, Eggleston, of Ucuacil Bluffs, Anludian obisf took possession of her and caused several departed spirits to appear to her vision, She described them but nome present could recognize any of them as being departed friends. Mr, Grove finally suggested that ho would like to converee with hla mother, The me- diom clalmed that the spiri* of Liis mother was present and was stand ing behind him with her hand on his head, and there could bs no mistake about it, Mr. Grove asked several ques- tions, among others whather she was happy in the other world, sud if ehe would like to come back to this life to live again. Sho said she was happy, and did not desire to return to this life, but that she would like to see and talk with her friends. Mr. Ewell's brother David also appeared. Mr. Ewell asked his brother to make some statement as to something that had happened between them while he was yot in this Jife, and he told him of driving oxen hitched to a sled, and various other things common among boys. The father of Mr. Harris was also called back from the epirit land, and Mr. Harris asked him if he was satia- fied as to how he had sottled up the busi. ness, Hercplied that everything was all right 8o far as he had gone, but that the business was not all settled up yet, and that he had a tract of land yet that his father did not want him to eell if they could get along without selling it. His father advised him about moving, and other things of a buslness character, Mr Grove says that at the time thls seance was held his mother was in good health and alive instead of being a spirit, and that Mr, David Ewell, and Mr. Har- ris were still in the flesh, so that they could not have been called back from the epirit land, and that Mr. Harrla had no estate at all to settle, nelther he or his father owing any man. The description of this seance makes a suitable to hang alongside and in contrast with the one given not long ago by Mr, Vincleat. in which the same medium gave such a wonderful account of the world beyond. —— For sale—My book andstationery bus- ness 341 B;undwnyA H. E. Seaman. e — ‘What Bessio Has Heard. OmamA, January 18, 1885. My Dearest Eprra:—Oh! How I wish I could see you for ten minutes to-day, for I am going away to-morrow and won't be back till Saturday. I have so much to tell you that a ten minutes’ interview would relieve my pent up feelings more than I can expross. You can’t 1magine how much’{I enjoy your letters, but you often aromse my cariosity by alluding to some maitars in a “l.wish-I-could-tell-you-all” s=ort of manner. I hear 80 much about you people on the other side that it is almost useless for me to attempt to put it all on paper, but prominent among the, rumors is one con- nected with your ““mash” (1) I hear it whispered that he is taking boxing les- sons, and has ‘‘declared” himself (I must be catching Bob's elang), that in the near futare he will be able to hold his own with any of the ladies. And is it true that Mr. ‘“‘Emerald” has become so infatuated with progressive euchre that he sent to New York for rules? ‘Blondy” eays that he staid at home one night till 11 o’clock to read up, and surprised the party by his sudden appearance, and with the announcement, “Su,e and yow're not playing it right,” Of ccurse we hear so much about Council Blufs that we don’t know just what to believe. I wonder if Omaha had such a time with its exclusive society when it was a small burg? It was too bad t> call Mr. R. a “dude,” but I really thiok Mr. F. s slight'y inclined that way. Butin Omaha, as bad as you think we are, thera is no record of a dude leaving his lady, at the c¢read hour of 12, three blocks from home. Of course you grasp. Probably the relicf experienced by his sudden de- parture overcame her surpriec and fear, Ploase give me the particulars of this dear Edith, for, of course, what I hear Is mere rumor, Your literary young lady is probably writing a companion story for ““T'he Bauker's Daughter,” and is taking, #8 her hero, the banker's son, 1 am surprised to hear Miss Trimmer al luded to a8 *‘the charming but hateful” Mies T., for I thought she was conaid- ered quite a favorite, One of our elite has become go taken with C. B. that she will probably be Mrs, H. “in one year.” ‘‘Blondy"” eays that your soclety clr- cles have been quite agitated by the sec- ond appearance of one of Its old favorites, I can't exactly understand what Is at tha Root of all this, but suppose it is as it shoe.d be, Does the affectionate business atill con- tinue near the park 7 The eleighing is just splendid over here, and the boys estimate 1ts cost at three dollars a mile, just as if we cared, 1 cannot be at home for the carly hour party Tuesday night, I hesr that sever- al Council Bluffs young people are invited and will attend. “Blondy” says that several of your young men have taken quite an interest in religous mattars (since Jan'y foes: ) Don’t you miss him Sunday night?
