The ladies of the Harmony mission have done well in securing the Potter sisters for an entertainment here Thurs- evening of next week in Masonic hall, The Potter sisters have the reputation of being at the head of all readers and im- personators in tho conntry, and they should draw a large audience here, C. G. Pike died rather unexpectedly yesterday morning at his residence, at No, 301 North Seventh street, He was aged forty-two years. The remains will be taken to Creston Saturday, that being his old home, He was & member of the G. A. R, bhaving eerved in the 24th Michigan infantry, and the veterans will escort his remalns to the place of burial, The fire department is making great preparations for the ball to be given in Masonlc hall, January 17. The sale of tickets has already commenced and the boys will have no difficulty in disposing of a large number, The fire lads are not very liberally pald, considering the haz. ardous character of their work and the responsibility resting upon them by day and by night, snd the public should give them a benefit, Oficer Hurley had a]sharp chase Wednesday night down the Rock Island road, after & man who answered the description of the fellow who tried to pass @ ralsed check on Mr. Moaler. After finding the man ke was after, it ap- peared that it was not the forger at all, bat *‘the fellow who looked like him”. somewhat, Hurley worked well, but it was & fruitless chase, There has been a good deal of talk about the paving being & good advertise- ment for Councl! Bluffs, but the dirt which is allowed to accumulate on the paving scems to be destroying whatever benefit might thus arise. For instance, among some of the country exchanges the following item is going the rounds *The mud has sccumulated to such & denth on Council Blufl's newly paved streets that the recent improvement is not visible o #* - Med v ROBBED OF HIS ROLL. Too Much Whiskey and Too Little Sense the Canse of the Luss, A Bold Steal Irishman, who be- has only James Callan, an longs at Mondamin, snd who been in this country a year, complained st police hoadquarters yesterday that he had been robbed. It apposts that he left Mondamin Wednesday for Missourl Val- ley, and there fell in company of & stranger, who was dressed like a farm hand, and who seemed a congenial com: panion, They drenk together quite free- ly, and then on the evening train oame to this city, and continued their carousal. At a late hour, the two went to the Coy house and wero given a room. Callan was very drunk, and after his comrade had helped him into bed, he told Callan that he was going down stairs, and that he would take Oallan’s money and put it in the safe in the office, as somebody might break into the room and steal it, Cal- lan lay there ina stupld condition and eaw the fellow take the money, about €112, and start out, but did not realize that he was boing robbed. The fellow after thus getting the money locked the door as he went out, and took the key with him, fearing probably that Callan might rouse up and attompt to follow him. Coming down into the office, the fellow spoke to the night-clerk, told him that he was going out a few minutes, that his chum had gone to bed and that he would be right back to go to bed also. Bell & Hall's delivery team was the start- er. They started on thelr dash from the upper end of Broadway sud os they reached the front of 8, Goldstein’s second hand store betwoen Scott and Sixth street, they made a dash againat the wagon of L, A, Casper, whose team was standing there. The runawsys erowded between Casper’s team and the front of the store, smashing a set of platform noales, and starting Casper’s team into a run. Both teams dashed on to the corner of Seventh street, and there stood one of D. H, McDonald and & Co.'s teams, The wagon was struck and overturned, the contents, consisting of meat, was scattered about whilo that team started off also on a run, dragging the running gear so far as Soventh street bridge, where they got clear of it, In the meantime the two other teams run down Broadway, scat- did not come back, and when Callan woke up yesterday morning he then ro- alized that he had been robbed. Officer Hurley went with him yesterday to Mis- sourl Valley, there being some indications that the fellow had gone in that direction. — McClurg's eelf-rising huckwheat flour is the best. Another Committee will be Needed to Go East to Sell Them. —_— The sewer bonds, amounting to §35,- 000 have been issued some time, but,so far a8 learned, no effort 1s being made to sell them, There has been a great delay in getting the bouds in shape to put on the market, it being a long time before they were executed, and now they are lying in the city treasurer’s hands with no effort being made to put them on the market. The work is about done, and yet is not paid for, and still this lethargy is main- talned on the part of the city officls So far as is known, no effort has been made to got the banks to sell them or brokers to handle them beyond, perhaps, some in- formal conversation, stroot talk, or a lit- tle advertisement inserted in some obscure paper, An official attempt ought to have been made sometime ago to get some banks or brokers to sell them instead of lotting the matter drift along, The result will be in the case of the paving bonds, that the emergency will get pressing, and there will be an urgent demand for money., & committee will need to be sent In hot haste the expenee willbe as grert or great- er than to pay & commisslon for selling the bonds, and the final outcome will be no more satisfactory. The Inactivity of those who have the matter In hand, looks very much as if they preferred to lot the thing go uenil a committee of thalr own number could have a pretext for taking another eastern trip. ——— Window shades at cost to close them out, P, O, Miller 13 Pearl stroet. o — St. John Bros. have bought, cleaned and refurnished the Revere House, H49 Brondway, opposite tho opera house, Council Bluffs, where you will find cl rooms, clean beds and well filled tables. THE DISTRICT JUDGESHIP, Friends Huntiog up Loofbourow's Errors to Count Aylesworth Out, Tue Bk a fow days agogave the news that errors In the returns were being olaimed by Judge Loofbourow’s friends, and that they had discovered enough to count him in instead of Judge Ayles- worth, Somo laughed at the idea, and termed it a mere sensation, but It appears that Tue Bee was correct, and that such a search was bolng actually made at the time. The following is given as a portion of a letter received by Judge Aylesworth from a gentleman in Jeflorson, lowa: “‘The board of wsupervisors of the county met to-dey and after recelving new or awended returns from the elec- tion board of Grant township and Scran- ton township the board have made & new or amended return on district judge. They give Loofbourow 8 more votes in Grant and take tho sald 8 votes from Aylesworth, They also took 3 votes from Aylesworth in Scranton township and gave 2 of them to Loofbourow. This is a change of 21 votes in Loofbourow’s favor.” It Is claimed that there are other errors also in Judge Loofbourow’s favor. In this city the only peculiarty discov- ered in the returns is that of the Second ward, as noted the other day, where the tally sheet shows three less votes for Aylesworth than the certificate shows. It seems evident that Loofbourow’s friends are determined not to leave a nook or corner unsesrched, but will hunt up every error ,in his favor, Judge Aylesworth says there ave some errors in his favor, and is confident be is elected. e — Seul, encque aud fur trimmings.
