A ballot is a piece of paper averaging four inches wido and ten and a half long, One hundred and fifty ballots will weigh about a pound. Two hundred and fifty ballots laid on each other will mensure about an inch. To prepare these bita of paper at n reasonable profit costs ninety cents a thousand. If the ballots cast to-dsy were placed end to end they would reach in a continuous line from Washington, D. C., to El Paso, in Texas, or they would stretch from Eastport, Me., to New Orleans, as the crow flies. If one end of the long line of paper were made fast at Capo Fiattery, the extreme northwestern promitory of Washington Territory, the other end would pass Kansas City, with enough miles to spare to reach Sedalia. This has to do only with the ballots ac- tually voted. The number of ballota printed, of course, is tremendously larg- er than the amount voted. In St, Louis, for instance, the democrats have had 500,000, the other parties in all 700,000, making for this one town a total of 1,- 300,000. It is generally admitted, how- ever, that the vote of St. Louls will not, at the outeide, make more than 50,000, Here, then, Iaa surplus of twenty-six ballots for each one cast. This makes the total of ballots offered to the veople throughout America at this election 260,- as they may cost the smallest or the largest amount, A fan and a shopping bag are eseontial, and so is a dressing- case, with the thousand and one litile conveniences of traveling and toilet dear to & woman's heart. Fifty dollars would be a fair estimate, exclusive of the jew- olry, ange of Price, Size of Doses, Etc Prairie Farmer, No other substance in the whole range ot the materia medica has been 8o great a boon to the human race as quinine; and in later years it has been administered to many ailing domestic animals with de- cided benefit, A vast amount of suffer- ing has been alleviated by it, and many hundreds of thousands of lives have been saved or prolonged, during the settlo- ment of our new country, where there has been constant exposure to decaying accumulations of centuries of vegetable growth. *‘Ague,” ‘‘chills,” ‘‘fever-and- ague” have been tho thing, cf all others, to be dreaded by those going into new reglons, especlally those covered with foresta in somewhat level countries. We well remember that when our neighbors, in families and groups, emigrated to the wilds of Michigan, the first inquiry made concerning them whether they had yet had, or how they got through with the inevitable intermittent fever, or ‘fever- nague,” as it was usually termed. Dur- ing the late war probably more men were placed hors du combat and came home with health shattered by malaria than perished from the rifle and cannon mis- siles, Itis perhaps safe to say that the amount of suffering from this would have- been doubied had not quinine been a leading article In the army medical sup lien. The large increase in the average length of human life during the last forty yeara is due in no small measure to the in- creased production of quinine, and its al- moat universal use by physicians, The tails of the Troussean and the Expenso of the Items, numbers by 1 in 1808 was { 1.
