The following 1s a brief description of the Council Bluffs water-works: The water of the Missouri River is pumped inte two subsiding reservolrs of a combined capacity of ten million gal- lons, by two Andrews’ centrifugal pumps, each capable of discharging fifteen thou- sand (15,000) gallons per minute. The water is pumped from the subsiding res- ervoir into a storage reservoir by two Knowles compound duplex pumping en- gines, each capable of raising three and one-half million (3,500,000) gallons of water in twenty hours, The storage reservoir has an average elevation of 175 feet above the city, and a capacity of four million (4,000,000) gallons, The Birkinbine fire protection apparatus I8 also connected with worke, 8o that the pressure is in time of fire to 126 pounds to the square inch, The apparatus is pro- vided with safety valves, to prevent rup- ture of mains, and an automatic valve s0 constructed that it is positive in its action) that will open, should the pumps be stopped from any cause, and the en- tire contents of the storage reservoir is at once available, The works have twenty-two miles of street mains, composed of 30, 24, 20, 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4 inch pipe, connected wWith 200 two way fire hydrants.
