Heis an employ of the iron works, while Roberts is a teamster., Both had been drinking yes- torday, and Roberts was so full that he could not navigate easily. The affair occurred around the corner of Main street, on Tenth avenue. Some salt barrels were next to the building and Roberts was seated on one of these, talking with Wycoff, who was standing up. Tho latter appar- ently took oxception sto something which Robert said, and struck him knocking him downon the sidewalk. He then jumped on him with both feet, and after battering him up in a horrible man- ner, left him apparently for dead, and sauntered off, as a young man came along and was about to lift Roberts up. Wy- coff turned and came back, half crying as if with rage and poor whisky In equal parts, and blubbered out something to the effect that he “‘wouldn’t let any son of a gun call him a liar,” and started to kick Roberts agaln. The young fellow revented him from doing so, and then gVycan turned on him and threatened to use him as he had used Roberts, but changed his mind, and walked off. Roberts was picked up and got into » wagon and taken to the police station, where Dr. Allison was called in, In the meantime Wycoff had started off, remarking that ‘‘if they catch me thny're good ones.” He started on the road toward the institute for the deaf and dumb. City Marshal tiuanella tele- phoned for his horse and buggy and com- menced sending offlcers with horses after the fellow. Guanella and his brother, Constable Wesley, Officers Hurley and O'Brien, Ed Bates ahd others were soon after him. Guanella had also deputized young Kildare, and the latter found Wy- coff on the road, but Wycoff had armed himself with a revolver, and proposed to use it on Kildare, who not being able to return the compliment, declined to tackle him. Officer Hurley and Constable Wesley coming up in a buggy, found Wycoff walking along next to the fence, near the paper mill. Wycoff had a revolver, but Hurley at once cover- ed the fellow with his gun, and gave him due warning not to try to shoot. The capture was thus made, and Wycoff brought to the city jail and locked up. The injuries received by Roberts ap- pear very severe, but it is difficult to de- termine whether they will be fatal or not. His face was battered into a jelly, and both oyes were closed so that he could not see out of them. He was unconscious, and large quantities of blood came from his mouth. He revived somewhat and was removed from police headquarters to his boarding place. Wycoff tn jail was very boisterous He insisted that Roberts in coming outof some saloon had knocked him down twice, which was no excuse for thumping Roberts, Wycoff has the reputation of being a brute when in whisky, and much indignation was expressed agalnst him yesterday among the bystanders. He has had seversl difficulties before, and got out of them rather easily, but this time it seems that his murderous assault will not be lightly overlooked. Mis, B, J.
