Octobor I\‘l LouisviiLe, Ky., Oct. 7.—At the city hospital last night, in the presence of but two or three friends, Matt O'Reardon, one of the most popular song writers of recent years, died. Young in years, but broken down b; ease, with shattered nerves and a wrecked mind, for a vear or moro he might have been seen lying about the barrooms, stupid from strong drink, his fine features bloated, and his eyes, that once kindled with the inspiration of song, glazed and heavy. Now and then a lover of music would stop in front of some famil- linr haunt of O'Reardon’s to listen toa waliz or a reverie, played with the skill of & master. Sometimes, when fired by drink, he would sit by a barroom pians and play some composition of his own with a fervor and a pathos that drew tears from those about him, Years ago, when a young man, he fell in love with Alice Oates. Whether the actress evea re- turned his affection is not known. One day he found out his mistake. He was told that his loye was not reciprocated. He immediately began to drink heavily, and from that time to the day of his death he was seldom free from the in- fluence of drink. He obtained a number of engagements on the stage, but broke them all. He could never be trusted to keep sober any length of time. Some weeks ago he was taken sick, and Mana- ger Whalen, of the Grand Theatre tuc- G‘-OI].\TG- WEST.
