Duncan, of this city, and ina stroll about the city was introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Rush, at their residence on Frank- lin street, one of the leading families of the spiritual falth. The home mission- ary thus relates his experience: We soon noticed Mrs. R. go off in a half-dozed state, then brighten up ina very different countenance, and the oun- trol speaking through her made us a fine addresg in a clear English tongue., This control soon left, her countenance took on another form, and soon a_spirit con. trol was addressing us in broken German tongue, and from our life we could not Smallest in Size and Lightest in vight. Aadress RICHARD & CLARKE, Omaha,Neb have known it from our old German friend at Sidney, Geo. Otte, had it been other than before our eyes. Through the mediumship of this control many inter- esting tests were manifested. First, there was described as standing near us a spirit form of a lady, who was at first a little girl of, 7 or 8 yoars, but who since entering spirit lifo had attained her full erowth; she died of disease of the throat; tuat she came to me because she had in life such a love for my brother; that her parenta lived then as now but a short dia- tance from our home. The medium then described & young man in base ball uniform in the attitude of the catcher behind the bat, and those about Tabor will readily recall the tragic ending of a game played in early Janu- ary some winters ago. He reviewed to me the circumstances that surrounded his death, that I had forgotten; how he was taken with a chill the evening of the game before he got home; of the excite- ment and feeling that prevailed in the place during the three days between his death and funeral; how some mourned that ho was thus cut off in his prime *‘so unpropared,” etc. He spoke of some of his nearest triends here, all of which I will not here relate. 1 will add that he conversed with meon things that I had forgotten, that no one in the world ;but myself koew of at all, to all which I ask, whence comes this intelligence? The medium them impersonated a very aged gentloman, and after a fow changos I readily recognized who it was but eaid nothing, but soon in a husky voice that dispersed every doubt ‘‘grandfather” was audibly spoken, and the old gentleman appeared 80 over-joyed to meet me that he could with difficulty speak. It was certainly a pleasure to so intelligently converse with one who in life had always taken an interest in me and get his own description of his present existence, Presently another scene was described, that of a drowning of a young man. The surroundings were so accurately de- scribed, the young man also, that anyone who had known Clarence Hill could not mistake it. Grandma Veily, also grandma Hunter, and a few others. After a half an hour in this trance state, the medium regained herself as different in looks as could be imagined and as ignorant of what had taken place as if she had just awakened from sleep. The question arises—what isit? e — WHERE AND WHAT IS HEAVEN? W. A. CLARKE, Superinandent 17TH & 18TH STREETS evator Machinerv WATER AND GAS PIPE, Rev, A, K, Bates Attempts to Answer the Query, At the Opera House yesterday morn- ing, the Rev. A. K. Bates, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, present- ed hishearers with the subject of *‘Ku- ture Exlstence,” taking for his text the 11th verse of the 19th chapter of Revel- ations, ““And I saw heaven opened.” I call your attention this morning to he statements of the of scripture respect- ng our future, a subject concerning which we have not a great deal of inform- ation given us in the Bible, yet as much is given as it is wise for us to know. The book of Revelations is a book writ- ten separately from the other books in the Bible, and although not written by the holy spirit, it is dictated by the Lord Jesus to his servant John, and concerns itself entirely with future events after the fourth chapter. John has given to his writers as they were inspired to prepare this wonderful book, some_information with regard to heaven. Now in the first place, I will show that heaven is a place. Itisa place different from this state of exist. ence. It has been observed and argued by some, that what we call heaven, fs simply a refined state of the human heart and condition of being. This is not so at all. It involves that, but 1t is simply a place. *‘Thus saith ‘he Lord, heaven is my dwelling place.” "TTIH ¥3TI0¥ 'TIIAO — Railway Time Table. The place which he has prepared for us is the place where he is now. In the book of Hebrews we read of Jesus sitting at the right hand of God and crowned with glory, It is a place, not a state of being. 1 make mention of this fact simply because it is a statement of scripture, and it is very beautiful for the mind to associate thought with a state of R OILILIE IR Stang - Rink ! BEE MONDAY, 0C sin* The first sin was cursed and has been followed by cursin over fince. By finding heaven we would find a place where thereis no more cursing where | there is no sin. In the ecriptutes from | beginning to the end, sin is used as a term indicative of trouble, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” Here the two places aro mentioned to gother, but kept soparate and apart. Again, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my foct-stool.” We cannot con- fonnd those two figures of spoech, Josus said at one time, **There are some stand ing here who shall not tasto of death till | they see the Son of God in glory,” and soon after took Peter, James and John up into a mountain, snd was thore trans- lated boforo them, and the disclples fell upon their faces unablo to look upon His glory. They were eyc-witnosses of the Lord's majesty and glory in the holy mountain, When we are brought into the presence of God wo shali see glory. Hoaven is also a place of joy and glad- ness. Thac means a great deal to some people in this world. Every luxury that wo have costs something and some peo- [)lo cannot enjoy a luxury, We have a nste of joy here now and then, especially those who are christian poople. In our christian experience, when we come near God, there is exoceeding joy above any- thing that is ever know otherwise, From the very moment we enter the city of the Lore Jesus, there will bo excoeding groat j“i. * Partly becauso we enter what other reasons I cannot state but there will certainly be great joy. . Heaven is also a placo of rost. Rest compared with anything we have eover known, but there will be labor. The lord has come again to receive us unto himself, and reward us according to our deeds. Those who have been in trouble will find rest. We shall be laboring in the service of the Lord and still have rest from our troubles, It is a place where tho wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest. We know what it is to rest from the labors of the day. We know what 1t is to rest from the workings of an uneasy conscience. We know what it 1s to rest from the pangs of an unforgiven sin, We know what it is to seek the Lord in prayer when we have been disturbed with reproachful reflections, and thus find solace and rest. How wonderful God has made rest for those who love him! Let us labor that we may enter into that rest. This gives me an opportunity to speak a word of very urgent appeal to those who do not believe the word of God,and also to Christians. Tho reply given by the Lord Jesus on one occasion to the queation “‘What shall I do to be saved?" 18 what 1 wish to call to your minds. The reply was *‘Strive to enter in, for many shall be called but few chosen.” The word *‘Strive” means agonize. The strifo will be necessary to conquer our own natures which are repellent. The disposition of the heart in its natural state is to oppose it. Now beloved Iriends let ‘me urge you to labor in the servico of Giod. Lot your prayer be ““God be merciful to me a sin- ner,” and bring yourselves to acknow- ledge your wickedness, and labor, there- fore, to enter into that rest. About a week ago Austin had & row with his wife, shot several times but he claimed that the revolver went off accident: and sho came into court and testified to the same thing. He was thus let off with a slight fine, though many believed then that he tried to shoot her at that time. A few days ago Austin_had a row with anothercolored man named Pete Fletcher, whom he thought was too intimate with Mrs. Austin, Austin pulleda rovolver but Fletcher knocked him down and got the revolver away from him, but afterwards returned It to him, It was this same re volver with which he did the shooting. A day or two ago ho had another set-to with Fletcher, and had the latter ar- rested for assault. Kletcher, therefore, soems to bave been the chief cause of his jealousy. Saturday Austin informed his folks that he intended to leave the woman and let her shift for herself. Last eve- ning about six o'clock his step-father, Johnson, met Austin near Motcalfo's sa- loon, where§Austin was employed, and urged him to come home, let the woman live by herself, offering to let him live at home without cost of board or rent. Soon after Johnson had reaceed home, eaten his supper, and while Mrs. Johnson was at church he heard the shooting, and rushing out found Austin had shot his wife and killed himself.] Several persons were on the street in the vicinity of the shooting.
