His inclinations were early directed toward the astage. and be- fore attaining his majority he had won me local renown in juvenile patts, Forty yearsago he was a prominent_ featurs of = Mitchell's Olympic theatre in New York City, and it was at that house and about that time that he gained a wide and splendid reputation as the originator of the character of Mose, the fireman in Ben- jamin Bakor's drams, “‘A glance at New York.” The roputation young Chanfrau achieved in_this character” was more than national, and bore fruit in the shape of scores of imitators, among the better known of whom were J, H, McVicker and John E, Owens, Chanfrau subsequently made good hits in the character of Dundreary, and in his own play, “Brother Sam,” the principle character in which was presumed to be brother to Lord Dundreary, Next to Mose, Chanfrau wi best known ns it in “The Arkansaw Traveler.,” Mr, Chanfrau’s carly atage training was complete in overy de- tail, and previous to his embarkation in his noted specialties he was known to the profession as o painstaking actor to whom none of the leading stars would hesitate to intrust important supporting parts, For thirteen successive seasons, Mr. Chanfrau opened the Boston theatre with “The Arkansaw Traveler,” and Kit was oach year welcomed by & crowded house. Mr, Chanfrau all this time en- joyed the reputation of an exemplary man in his private as well as his profes- sional life. He was a moderate liver, and leaves a fortuno cstimated at nearly a quarter of a million, Like John McCullugh, Mr. Chanfrau's first work was at a trade,as he was at cue time a ship-carpentor in ono of the west- ern cities. He went back to New York while he was still a young man,and joined the Forreat Dramatic Club, an organiz tion which was merged in the Dramatic Institute of that city, They attempted togive Shakspearean performances, which wore a failure. His first great success was in a broad comedy given in Philadelphi where he gave imitations of all the leading actors of his time. He was, in fact, the Nat Goodwin of his day. His subsecuent career is well known. In Cincinnati, in 1849, he married Miss Henriotta Baker, of Philadelphia, who survives him. only son and his heir was seen in this city last season, playing a comedy cha acter with John Stetson’s company “The Glass of Fashion. Chanfrau’ birthplace, by the way, was the ‘Old Tree'” tenement house, corner of Bowery and Pell streets, New York. 4t rofund the Guar. Three Quarts, Austin (Nev.) Reveille, The improvidence of Indians is pro- verbial. They toil not if they can help it, neither do they spin unless it is around a kitchen about meal time. They take no thought of the morrow,.3ut will gorge their capacious stomachs to highest notch, utterly indifferent of the coming day. To feast one day and fast six is a pretty fair average, though hardly up to the Indian wish. Night before last éhe motor crew tried to measure the appetite of a guileless Piute of ten sage brush summers, and to his demand for- something to eat gave him their lunches. Hale, Bice and Merrigan emptied their buckets and the young red' man swallow - ed and drank three quarts 6f tea and coffee mixed. “He then took & jaunt down to Battle Mountain,. bat appeared sgain last night to sce if he could not strike another grub bonanz, but the railroad boys did not respond and gave up the contract for filling such wapacious men. ———— STOP THAT COUGH By using D=, Trazier's Throat and Lung Bal- sum—the only sure cure for Congls, Colds, Hoorseness and Sore Throat, and all diseases of the throat and lungs, Do nosneglect a ugh.
