The following curious proclamation is said to have been sent out as a ‘‘general order of the day” some time before a bat- tle was expected between the Chinese and French. It was the work of a cele- brated Chinese Mandarin: I, a mandarin, and the chicf captain of the braves, order, and it is hereby or- dained to all that foilow me. Tremble and obey! Thirteen days beforo going into battle the braves shall eat steaks of the wild tiger, in order that they may have the agility and forocity of this animal, Twelve days before the battle the shall eat the kidney of the lion, that they may acquire the intrepidity natural to Modern roofs that king of the forest. Eleven days before the battle the braves shall eat of the brains of the ser- pent in order to have the subtleness of this animal, Ten days before the battle the braves shall eat the cream of the chameleon in order to frustrate the enemy by constant- ly changing their colors. Nine days beforo the battle the braves shall take broth made from the flesh of the crocodile in order to be able to fol- low the enemy into the water and be able to beat them both on land and water the same as the crocodile does. Bight days before the battle the braves seall eat the flesh of the panther in order to attack their enemy with furious rapid- ity. Seven days before the cattle the brayes shall eat two eagle heads in order to ac- (uire the strength of vision of that noble bird, and distinguish in the distance their adversaries, Six days before the battle the braves shall eat the intestines of the wild zebra in order to acquire the terrible volce of that untamable beast. Five days before the battle the braves shall eat steaks cut from the hippopota- mus in order to communicate to their skin the toughness that renders those an- imals invulneravle to balls. Four days before the battle the braves shall eat scorpions, so that all wounds made on their enemy shall be deadly poi- sonous as the stings of those animals are. Three days before the battle the braves shall eat steaks of the monkey, that they may become as agile as the monkey. On the eve of the battle the braves shall eat panther’s flesh and drink the blood, in order to be cruel and ferocious teward their adversaries. On the day of battle the braves shall eat the flesh and drink the blood of the leopard, in order to crush the limbs and break the bones of the enemy as these animals do. e An Arctic Cattle Pasture, An examination of the map will show that the peninsula of Alaska jutting out into the north Pacific ocean is prolonged by a range of islands which extend like stepping stones to Kamtschatka in Asia. These are the Aleutian islands, and ought to belong to us, since they form a sort of annex to th¥'theritory of Alaska, purchas- ed from Russia. They lia in a bleak al- titude, 55 degrees north, and have here- tofore been regarded as valueless, except for the seal fisheries they possess. But the strange story comes now that they have a balmy climate, the effect of the warm Japanese ocean current, Kurosiwo, which flows around them and mitlgates the rigors of their fsemi-arctic winter; nd it Is said that Lieut. Schwatka, who, in exploring the great river Yukon ot Alaska, made this discovery, has re- signed his position in the navy for the purpose of engaging with a Scotch com- pany in cattle raising in some of these islands, Cattle grazing under the arctic circlo would appear about as unpromising business as a man could go into; but it is stated that the group of islands which Lieut, Schwatka has his eye on have an arca of about 2,000 square miles, are warmed up by the Kurosiwo to a peren- nial temperature of (0 degrees, which will do pretty well. Sixty degrees is about our April temperature and is sug- gestive of very pleasant things. The islande, we are further told, are covered with perpetual verdure, and have no equal on the planet for stock ranges. If all this boe true, it is a new thing under the sun, Gl They Understeod Each Other, ““Aren’t they saying horrid things about the Mother Hubbard?” she said, as she looked up into his manly face. “Yes,” ho replied, *I believe they ome of the things they say in the pers,” she added, “'are too awful to read,” *“Then you don't read them, my love? *‘Oh, yes, I read them, but I think they are shocking “*What have you read lately about the Mother Hubbard, darling!” he asked. “I will not tell you now, my dear,” she replied, her cheeks suffussd w blushes; *“some time, perhaps, you will have the right to ask me, but not now,” *'Oh, I underatand,” said he; ““1 guess I have seen the piece you spesk of. Success'in business did not at- tend him, as is always the case with those on whom fair Cupid smiles, Some of Annie's old suiters prospered and grew well-to-do, and she was told that she was a foolish lass to wait for poor Andrew Williams, when wealth could be had for a nod. *“If yo be true to me Andy,” she said, LADIES: find fn DR. So after a tearful farewell aud promises to write and one day return and claim her as his bonnie bride, Andrew left his sweetheart and set sail for New York. He arrived at Castle Garden three years ago, and having a little money with him, at once started for the far west set- tiing in Hazleton, Buchanan county, Ia, He took to farming, prospered and grew rich, and is now one of the largest land owuers in that section of the country.
