6 THE DAILY BEE:--COUNCIL BLUFFS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1884. e vantage ¢, his being well acquainted with Tnimed that t s man taking ad- THE DAILY BEE, |caimec at the young man tal it s ierat—— COUNCIL BLUFFS. Tuesday Morning September 2. RIPTION RA SUE By Oarrler = - By Mail = = - - nta yor week 0.00 per your OFFICE: oar Broadway. No. 7 Poarl Streo MINCR MENTION. Soe J. Reiter's fall goods. The schools opened with goodly bers yesterday. The paving and sewerage gangs are again at work on Broadway. Charles . Harmon yesterday received his “show” drills for the fair. num- J. W. Kleeh & Co. were yesterday un- loading their third car of buggies. The store lately vacated by Michaels Bros. is being fitted up a8 a boot and shoe store. McClurgs’ cracker factory team took a littlo run yesterday, but were held up bofore any serlous damage was done. Officer Bates yesterday gathered in, by the aid of an express wagon, an old man whom he found feartully drunk on Ban- croft street. The city clerk reports as the receipts of his office for August, §3,636, of which £3,308 was from licenses and £310 from city criminal cases. The Western Towa College opened yes- terday its fuil term with an addition of fifteen new pupils and others coming in. Prof, Paulson is naturally much encour- aged by the outlook. Ernst 1, Hart and Horace J. Kvans have bought out the real estate and loan business of S. W. Ferguson & Co., and will have their office in with J. D. Ed- mundson on Main street. The jury drawn for the September term of superior court are: (ieorge Fer- guson, Welles Cook, K. W. Bunham, John Barbyte, M. Keating, I1.H, Fields, J. J. White, R. D. Amy, and George Edgar. A new horss shoeing establishment has been opened by Nash Bros. at 719 Broadway. F. B. Nash was for several years with Charles (iregory and has join- od his brother in starting out for them- selves. The Methodists are to have a soclal next Thursday evening at the residence of Rev. Joseph Knotts, corner of Wash- ington avenue and Scott street. All the friends are invited, and a merry timo is anteipated, Tho cash receipts of the superior court indicato that despite its high-sounding name, it isin fact a mere police court. From civil cases last month the enormous sum of §7 was received, and from state cases 87 00, 0. J. King, superintendent of tho new government court house and post ofiice expects that the driving of piles for the foundation of the building will begin to- morrow morning, They will be driven by Messrs. Raymond & Campholl. In the circuit court yesterday a motion was heard in the case of Morris vs, the city of Council Bluffs and the judge took it under advisement and adjourn- ment was taken till this morning, there being no other business on hand. Rev. Father Mulhill, an assistant of Rev. Father McMenomy, was taken with a congestive chill Saturday night and has grown rapidly worse, until yesterday he lay in an unconscious condition, and there seemed littlo or no hiope of his ro- covery. Prof. Paulsen last evening opened his night school in connection with tho Western Iowa college, It promises to be a great success, as it affords an opportu- nity to a great many young men who can- not find time by daylight to gain & busi- noss education, those 7.t the house, slipped into one of the 7.0oms and sneaked the stuff gut of a Vyureau and then pawned the revolver. fhe revolver was found at a second-hand -| place, and after Desmond was arrested the proprietor identified him as the one who sold the weapon, Desmond is said to have borne a good character, and his arrest isa matter of surprise to his friends, The talk about company here has about died out., organizing a militia A va. cancy exists in the state militia, and if Council Bluffs had a ‘‘crack one that could capture some prizes in competition drills, and win some honors, the citizens would soon have some pride and enthusiasm in giving support to such an organization. A good military compa- ny, while furnishing healthfal exercise to the members and pleasant recreation, would be a gocd card for the clty. The trouble seems to be to get just the right kind of men to start it. The many friends of B. Silloway, pro- prietor of the Ogden house, and also of the Northwestern hotel at Cedar Rapids, will sympathize with him on learning that he lost a brother by sudden deaththe other day in Burlington, This brother, Waldo Silloway, entered the oflice of a hotel in Burlington, and sitting down in a chair fell asleep. It proved to be the sloop of death, for when an attempt was made to rouse him, it was discovered that heart discase or some sudden and fatal trouble had made him its victim. The deceased was employed in the North- western at Cedar Rapide. company, Harry Hatch, the well-known saloon man, suffered a third stroke of, paralysis yesterday morning, and death soon after ensued. Mr. Hatch has been in such ill health for weeks, and has suffered so much from previous strokes, that his death was not unexpected, Mr, Hatch was in business in Chicago at tho time of tho great fire there, and lost heavily thereby. He soon after came here, and has been engaged in the saloon and res- taurant business until ill health com- pelled him to retire. Ho leaves a wife, but no children, The funeral will be this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the resi- dence, No. 101 Broadway. 1t has been protty well demonstrated that there are fow Council Bluffs people, in proportion to the population, who tako enough interest in the races to give the driving park association the patron- ago which is needful to tho success of the entorpriso. One of the troubles is that thero aro not enough local horses in the races to awakon local intorest, One need but recall tho names of such horscs as Jack Peregoy, Lorene, Little Sioux, and Mattio Harlo to realize that special in- torost has beon taken by many in every raco in which any of these horses were entored. Mattio Harlo was the only local horso at this meeting, and more in- terest was folt in hor than all tho others put togother. It thero had beon a half dozon more such horses owned in Council Bluffs, much more interest would be folt, and the people would have turned out to the meotings in larger numbors, DELIGHTING IN DELAY, The Two Iellows Arrested as Confi- dence Men Are in No Hurry To Be Tired, Yosterday tho two men giving the nawes of J. B. Jordon and C. H. Burke, and whe wero arrested by Detectives Foro and Valentine as confidence men, brought up bofore Justico Schurz for an examination. Through their attornoy they asked for & continuance, Justico Schurz intimated that he would give a continuance provided they would consent to take the evidenco of the pros. ecuting witness, the old German who is now being detained here for that pur- pose. Aftor that testimouy had boen taken 50 that the old man could leave, ho One of the confidence men, named Hale, who has been in jail awaiting trial for doing up & man named Smith in the sum of $285, was yesterday roleasod on bail, §700 cash being put up for his ap- pearance at the next term of the disirict court. Another of the trio still lics in jail, while the third one, who was dis- charged, is sauntering about the strects here, as bold as a lion, E. E. Adams & Co. is the nsme of the new firm who aro preparing to open a boot and shoe store in the rooms lately occupled by Michael Bros, as a jowelry house, No. 417 Broadway, The new store is to be known as the Boston Shoe Store, the gentlemen coming from the Hub, where they had for some time been engaged both in manufacturing and Jjobbing boots and shoes, The speedy horses have left the drivin park here for other courses, The Mis. souri Pacific made up a special train here, from the dummy depot, to run to St Joseph, consisting of ten cars of fast horses, with a passenger coach attached to the rear, for the accommodation cf the horsemen, The horses on this train were valued at $125,000, A precious load. Among them was Cal Dailey's fine little mare *‘Mattio Harlo,” Mayor Vaughan, whose telegrams aro sent first to one and then another, has wired the city clerk this time. He states that the attorneys for the Boston brokers have agresd togo to New York with h.an aud get Judge Dillous's opinion on the legality of the bonds, and if the Judge says they are all right they will take them, It has been said that Judge Dil. lon deems the bonds perfectly good, ro would lot them havo a continuance, They would not agree to this, and finding that Justico Schurz would not do otherwise, they took a change of venue to Justice Abbott, That justico wanted to go over to Omaha yesterday afternoon, and so he put tho case down for this morning, when the motion for a continuance will be made. This modo ot proceduro is getting to be quite & common trick with confidence men. As long as witnesses are on the ground, ready to testify, they are anxious for delays, thus tirmg out the witness, but if the witness is not on hand then they are in a hurry to Lo tried right away. e —— Ed. Bates, of the police force, had somo little talk and talk back with Pete Skinner Ist evening which caused Bates to pull off his star, give up his cluband «uit the force. — The New House, Congressman Pusey has received the following lotter, which is self-explana- tory: TREASURY Deran OFFICE SUrERVISING A August 28, 1884, | Hon. The doctor made all ar- rangements to go last night. John Nicholson, who is now located at the stock yards in Omaha, was over on this side shaking hands with his many friends, 1e seems well satisfied with his prospects in his new location, and has already been offercd for his property an advance on what he paid, Charles and Honry Paschel, sons of the old and respected citizen, Henry Paschel, leave today for South Bend, Tnd., to resume their courso of study at Notre University. heg won honors last year, and will doubtless ain their high rank in thelr classos this Dame . S That Waif, C. M. Brookings, of Tokemah, Neb., called at Tur Ber ofice yesterday in company with C. F. Adams, Mr. Brookings Is the father of the young man who got into 80 much trouble by leaving a babo on the door step of Mr. Jennings' residence. Mr. Brookings has acquaint- ances i this cily, among them ex- Mayor Bowman, who cheerfully bear testimony to his high standing and respectability, and he has hastened here to sco that his daughter's roputation is not injured by any unjust suspicions. Those who are conversant with tho facts havo been convinced that the girl is not tho mother of the child, and the fact that sho so readily acknowl- edged all tho dotails as to what she did with the child, and so freely told who she was and whero sho belonged, naturally strengthens the bolief that the babe wae loft with her by a woman on tho train, who did not come back after it, and that in her frantic attempt to get out of the predictment sho disposed of the child by leaviug it at tho Jennings resi- dence. The young woman as well as the family seews to have borne a good repu- tation, and Mr. Brookings says the un- pleasant notoriety caused by the sensa- tional event comes as heavy as a death in the household. Admitting the young woman's story to be true, and that she wag imposed on hersclf, it was a terri- ble mistake on her part when sho sought to got out of the scrape by practicing the samo kind of imposture on some one else, and the trouble caused her should sorve as a warning to gqueal lustily to anybody and every- body, when a baby is left on their hands, instead of trying to slip out on the sly, Mr. Adams also has had an interest in having Mr. Brookings visit the city, as his connection with the case as prosecut- ing attorney has been unfavorably com- mented on, and he is desirious that the public shall understand that he had good reasons for not prosccuting the case fur- ther, and that instead of urging the young woman to leave the city he kept her here at his house two duys and urged her to stay longor, and that he then telographed her father to come here in order that all tho facts might bo got at, and shown up fully.
