They would assassinate a human being, even their employer, for a §6 note, if they thought the darkness would enable them to escape detection, hence the police should know them. St. A. D. BALCOMBE, ——— Preparing for the Banquet, The meeting called at the Paxton ho- tel last evening of the business men and merchants of the town to take steps to give a banquet during the state fair, if deomed best, was attended by about twenty-five. The matter was discussed at considerable length and a financial committee consisting of Ben Gallagher, W. V. Morse and Henry Koch was ap- pointed. An executive sommittee also consisting of one member from each business place to determine the number of guests each house wishes to have present, was also appointed. The num- ber mentioned was 2,600. This commit- tee will meet on Mondsy night next. e — ‘Where the Best 1s Made, New York Sun, They were talking about ico cream. Several bathers splashed latest styles of bathing suits, wondrous cowbinations of colors and texture, stood upon the sand gazing timidly at the bathers. They were evidently afraid to venture into the cooling water, and their escort, & nobby young man with the build of the champion oarsman, was en- deavoring to coax them to brave the miniature billows. *‘It's no use,” exclaimed the tallest of the beautiful girls. “You know I can't swim a stroke and I don't want to crawl along the sand like a mud-turtle.” “But I will teach you,” persisted the oung man, “It's the easiest thing in the world. Come now, take my hand.” The young lady at last mustered cour- age, and stopped_daintily into the weter. *Strike out boldly!" cried her escort. She kicked and eplashed, and was about to sink when he put one hand un- der her chin and held her hand firmly above the waves. The cffect was suc- prising. The tair student floated easily along, used her arms and feet like an au- tomaton, and in half an hour could swim twenty feet without assistance. She de lighted at her new accomplishment, and soon prevailed on her companion to fol- low her example. The effect was equally as successful, and the young man gezed proudly upon his two fair pupils rivalidg a mermaid in her aquatic skill, “How is it you aro so successful in teaching the art in such a short time?” asked tge reporter. *‘The principal point for the learner is to have confidence in herself,” he answer- ed. *“Any person by holding their breaths and exerting themselves with arms can float like a cork. I simply hold their chin up for a few minutes, and they acquire confidence in themselves and soon strike out with hands and feet. The greatand useful accom- plishment of swimming is then learned, and, with a few days’ practice, most ladiea become excellent swimmers.” “‘Ien't it hard to make some of them hold their own chin?” The young man smiled and said that he found no difliculty in that respect. At afree bath on the £ast river front hundreds of young girls splashed around in the big inclousure and performed many amusing and difficult feats. Little girls, hardly ten years old, swam around with a clean, strong stroke, and scorned the use of any assistauce. They formed pyramids, jumped off of epring-boards, dived deeply under water, and came up ten feet away, going on liko circus acro- bats in their antics. “They enjoy it wonderfully,” said the lady attendant to the reporter. *Some of these girls come here five times a day when it is practicable, and we have hard work to get them out of the water. We have ropes suspended around the bath- ing house on which they hang when first learning, but they soon discard the assistance. One of the best ways to learn to swim is by the use of two bladders, or life-preservers, which are fastened under the arms and which render it Impos ble to sink. A stout German woman who came here the other day was sup- plied with the life-preservers and I lett her to attend to some children who had come in, suppoeing she knew how to use them, She fastened them on her feet and her bead sunk below the water. The children ecreamed and she was rescued, not much the worse for her ex- perience. She wouldn’t do it again, though.” —— IN THE HOLY LAND.
