CHARLES SHIvERICK, 1206, 1208 & 1210, Farnam st. mé&eaugl Yosterday was was unpropitious for the tournament. The different companies went out to the grounds in the forenoon but finding the track very heavy and muddy returned to the city. In the sfternoon they again went out in the hope that the forenoon sun and wind had put the track in a condition such that it could be used, but were disappointed. The regular programme of the day was accordingly postponed until to day, THE HITCHING CONTEST. The hitching contest of the three Oma- ha companies was the only thing on yes- torday’s programme carried out. This competition was simply an exhibition of the Omaha fire department to determine the best possible time the three com- panica could make in running by the fire alarm from their respective houses to box 42 corner of Thirteenth and Douglas. Uompany 2 made the distance and threw water from the pipe in tho remarkable short time of one minute and forty-seven seconds; No. 3's time was_two minutes and seven second and No. 1, whose house is distant from this box over a mile ran this distance, laid a block of hose and was throwing water in four minutes and seven soconds. The exhibition was a most satisfactory one and caused the celerity and discipline of the Omaha de- partment to bo the principal topie of con- versation among old firemen last evening. After the exhibition had ended many members of the Omaha department and the visiting firomen repaired to Firemen'’s hall, where a most social time was l_md. Those in attendance were entertained by music and speeches from various fire- men present, and the parching thirst of the Iowa firemen was occasionally allayed by a foaming tankard of beer drawn from a keg on the platform. THE JOHN M. THURSTONS, —Articles of agreement have been entered into between P, M. Duffy, of Omaha, and Dick Black, of Missouri, to run a foot race of 150 yards, on Saturday, August 2d, at tho driving park, for $300 a side, the start to be 12} feet, scratch start, Duffy is a member of the Thuraton hose team, and is belng backed by himeelf and the firemen. He recontly beat Archie McComb of San Francisco. Consider- able money will probably change hands, —A jury was empannelled in the district court Wednosday morning for the trial of Geo Davis onan indictment for robbery. All was ready for the trial, when Davis took survey of tho jury box, appeared discouraged, and, through his counsel, Mr, Baldwin, announced his readiness to plead guily togrand larceny, if the court would allow it. The court ac- copted, and thus tho trial et for the day was ended. No sossion was held in theafternoon, and owing to the extreme heat, the lawyers and litigants were extremoly grateful thore. for, —Little Bossio and Bulah Leavitt, daugh- ters of County Clork Leavitt, gave a birthday party yesterday afternoon to about twenty of their little friends, They were ontertained Dy tho young Misses Loavitt from 8 till 6 in & queenly manner, Mrs, Leavitt had not for- gotten to propare somo excellont rofreshmonts for the littlo ones which they partook of with 2 koen relish, Numerons presents wore pre- sentod Dy tho guosts, among which wore a number of beautiful bouquets, When the little ones took their departuro they all wishod Beasio and Bulah many happy returns of the day which they had just celebrated. i el Army Orders, Recruit ¥red Day, enlisted at Fort Omaha, Neb., is asslgned to troop M, Fifth cavalry, and will be sent to the sta- tion of his troop on the first favorable opportunity, Private Byron S. The travel directed is necessary for the public service, By order of Colonel Gibbon. o —— PERSONAL, Ever since the tournament began verbal protests have been made against the John M. Thurston hose company, of this city, competing in the state cham- pionship race which is down upon the programme for to-day. It is claimed that this company does not come within the rules as laid down by the State asso- giation. The Jgeneral committee also held a mooting, and one of its members says it was agreed to give no prizes unless it wa allowed to compete in this race. Yesterday's races, and those on qhe programme for to-day, with the exception S ithatirasttar ALk nibh i Heaieas put down for to-morrow at 2 p.m., will come off to -day e —— - A SECOND DEFEAT. The Evansvilles Beaten by the Score ot 10 to 3 by the Union Pacific, The Evansvilles and the Union Pacifics yesterday afternoon crossed bats for the third time and an overwhelming defeat resulted to the visiting team. The home nine kept the Hoosiers hunting leather a great share of the time, hitting Crowell, the regular pitcher, for thirteen safe hits. The homo team presented Sailsbury as pitcher, who never did more effective work in an Omaha diamond. He was surpported by Cavanaugh behind the bat who played a remarkble game and taught the visitors they could not make second by theft, cutting off the only two who furtively attempted to make it. Fdnkhouser played an unusual game in center field, missing a high fly from Jameson's bat, an instance so rare a8 to be remarkable. Orowell was supported behind the bat by Veach who caught the two previ- ous games and played his position almost faultlessly. Jameson, the released catcher of the Union Pacifics played second for the visitors, Hagan holding down first, The home team won the toss for the third time. McKelvey led off with a two baser, made third on Bandle's put out at first, and came home on Sneed’s single to right field, mak- an earned run. The visitors were allowed to score in the fiftih innings only. Hagan hit the sphere for one base and was allowed to make second on an ineffectual attempt to cut Crowell, the batter, ofl” at first, After Sowder went out ona popup to Salisbury Thompson made a fine drive to right center for three bases and made home on McKelvy's poor throw to cut him off at third. The home team added four more in the sixth and five in the eighth to that of McKelvy's in the first, dofeating the visitors by the scors of ten to three. The ground was very muddy and its condition greatly retarded the wame. Strock, the old catcher of the Bluffs’ team, who umpired Wednesday's game, acted in that capacity yesterday, and was cheered by the clowd when he appeared. The attendance was about 1,000, Following is the score, UNION PACIFICS, 0. Hunter, of Blalr, in at the Metrapolitan, * Theo, Wrrrick, of Blair, is ut the Metro. politan., M. The byys are confident they will receive the premium for the best dis- play in the parade. DOINGS IN THE COURTS, The Stoamboat Cases Finally Dis- posed of—Cooper Found Guilty of Burglary—Police Conrt Briefs, THE UNITED STATES COURTS, The opinion of the United States circuit judge in the libel case of J. H, McLain et al against the steamboats Gen. Mead, Nellie Peck, and Gen. Terry, was received and filed inthe Uuited States cler«’s office yesterday. Judge Brower overruled tho cxceptions to Judge Savage's report, dismissing the ocase at the cost of the libellants. It is the opinion of the judge that the claim for which these boats were libeled A Gorgeous Display is againat the Northwestern Transporta- tion jcompany and not against the boats. The General Mead passed down the river last night freightloss on its way from Covington, where it has been tied up for some time, to St. Louis. 1t will be run on the lower river in the future by parties who purchased from Mrs. Nellio Peck, its former owner, who for some time past has been residing in this city. POLICE COURT, William Kirk, for the larency of a coat, was given 30 days on bread and water. A complaint was filed against a police- man by Vinnie Clinton, who claims that the guardian of society assaultedand beat her, while on duty in a scate of intoxica- tion. The caso agalnat Joo Miller, charged with sssault and battery, was continued. Those protestants say that it has not been in existenco the requisite length of time. The board of control held a meat- ing yesterday and decided to bar this company from the state championship race to take place to-day. THE DISTRICT COURT. Thomas Cooper who was indicted for burglarously entering Bowery Hill saloon in the fore part of June last was found guilty of the crime charged, before Judge Neville yestorday. He relied upon drunkenness for his defense, but only a fow moments were needed by the jury for for defiberation to determine that he was accountable fcr his acts, The civil suit against Policeman Hinchey for civil damages arising from false imprisonment, by Napoleon Ander- son, was disposed of in favor of the de- fendant. The case of Knowles against Price was on trial at the adjournment of Judge Wakeley's courc last evening. District Attorney (iodwin will call up this morning the case of the State against Screiber, indicted for murder at the Oc- tober term of court. ——— A FIELD DAY, ADozen Evil Doers Before Judge Beneke Yesterday, Yestorday was a field day in polic court. A dozen evil doers walked into the prisoners dock to plead to the various charges against them. John Waddle, A. L. Irish and M. L. Young were charged with being suspic- ious persons, Irish had been working the city with a lot of brass rings and had made soveral sales of the same. One he sold for §2. They all pleaded not guilty and were held for examination. Frank Neal pload guilty to a charge of disturbance of the peace and was fined $0 and costs, John Chopp said that he was not drunk although a wagon had to be pro- vided to haul his limp and almost lifeless form to the jail. He said ho was sun- struck and his case was continued. D. Grandon was & youthful fighter. Ho said that another boy called him names and that he slapped his mouth. The judge taxed him 3 and costs for be- ing 8o handy with his hands. J. Martin and W. Brown were going home together on a wagon when they got into a dispute and got off upon the ground to settle the matter. Both of them appeared in police court with their oyes in deop mourning. They were fined $3 each and costs, Ed. Hood and John Green were ar- rested for fighting but were discharged as no one appeared againat thom, Harry Austin, » colored man, was charged with being a vagrant and living in a house of prostitution. He pleaded not guilty and his caso was continued, C —— A Mistake Inadverdently Made, Cor- rected, By inadvertence in yesterday's Bee' report of the tournament the Grand Island team was mentioned as having won the third place in the race for teams that never contested. This team was not entered in this race, there being only three competitors, the Cleiands of Fremont, the Nebraska City's No. 1, and the Doluge Hose company of Omaha, The Grand Island team, however, has been on the grounds, ever since the be. ginning of the t~urnament and, are here for the purpose of competing in the state championship race. This team it will bo romembered won the first prize at Lin- coln last summer in the race for teams that never contested. The (irand Island's are in excellent shape, and will make it decidedly interestivg for all their com- petitors, o Haflke Again. The man Chas, Haffke, who was ar- rested & fow weeks since for attempting to brain a man with an ax, was again arrested Wednesday for carrying an old “old Harney, gun and threatening to shoot someone. Ho is evidently crazy and his case will be taken before the board of insanity. o —— J. H, HENGEN & SON. By half past nine the crowd began to gather upon the business streets, and by ten o'cleck it was almost impossible for a person to press his way along the side. walks, Longing eyes were turned In the direction of the show ground, but for some reason the parade was late in mak- ing its appearance and it was noon be. fore it wended Its way down Sixteenth street, but when it did come all who had waited were amply repaid for their time, for a more gorgeous pageant of show property never passed through the streets of this city. In the afternoon and evening a large crowd gathered in thetents to witness the porformance. Never were exhibi- tions given in Omoha, the features of which om braced 80 much that was novel, to much that was bril- liant and so much that was startling. Two rings and a rased platform were en- livened the major part of the time by the performers, afoot and on horseback. A troop of Arabian tumblers, whose foats wero as varicd as they were daring, is an innovation in acrobatic entertainment. The ring riding is only a sacondary in. cident, This style ¢f equestrianism is overshadowed by the steeple-chasing, hurdle riding and chariot races contested on the ellipse which run around the entire canopied space. Such dashing horseman- ship by both men and women was never before witneesed in this city. The races had every appearance of being decided on their merits, Certainly they were as honest as the matches seen on the great fachion courses of tho country. The thoroughbreds which were ridden in the hurdle and steeple races were full of mettle. CIRCUS NOTES, Including the agents and bill posters there are 550 people on Mr. Forepaugh’s pay roll, The weight of the snakes that the Hin- doo girl wraps about her body at one time is 216 pounds, Mr. Forepaugh is ably assisted in the management of the show by his son, A. Forepaugh, jr., and his nephew, J. A. Forepaugh. One of the cleverest things of the per- formance is the impersonation of a dude by Charley Walton, of Walton and Ed- wards, the well-known sketch artists, The hippodrome races are the most thrilling and seneational of any ever seen in this city. The horses are English thoroughbreds and the riders profession- al jockeys. Mr. Forepaugh carries 325 head of horses, ponies and mulea. Billy Aenderson, the sauve and omni- present Pinkerton detective who accom. panies the show, 1a receiving the congrat- ulations of: his friends on the receipt of a telegram from his home in Philadelphia announcing the advent of a ten pound piece of humanity. Samuel Watson, the amusement di- rector, is just recovering from a severe illness ‘‘Dave” Watt, the lightning ticket seller, was the cynosure of & good many pairs of eyes yesterday. It requires 58 cars of extra length, all being between 40 and 60 feet long, to transport the show. In addition to this there are four advance cars, all of which are the property of Mr, Fore- paugh. Mr Potvin's Statement, Mr. Potvin, the contractor of the Long street and Leavenworth street school buildings, takes exception to the report of the board of education as it appeared in yesterdays issue. The Bk local has nothingto say of whatis dono by the board of education otherthan to give toits read- ors a correct report of the same, however Mr. Potvin is entitled to his say and he called at this office and denied that he said ot the meeting that he would give a bond of $10,000 that the roof would not falt jin, for he considers the roof first-class {n every particular. He says what he did say fs this: 14" seid to the board that I would give & 810,000 bond that I should prove that there is more timber in the roof than the plans and specifications call for.” N DIED, HARTHUN—Fritz, son of Alvine and J, F.
