The county normal institute continues at the Bloomer building, and the sessions are growing more and more intoresting. All who are interested in educational work should drop in, and they will surely spend the time not only pleasantly but profitably. The rain of Wednesday night caused a wash-out on Union avenue so that the dummy train was not able to run up to the Broadway depot yesterday forenoon. A gang of men was put at work and the washout repaired in a few hours. The giant of the sideshow who as- saulted Coroner Connell, because the latter said he could lay him out, gave the officers the slip, and went across the river. The marshal was duped by the assurance of the show detective that the giant would show up when wanted. Mayor Vaughan has set September 15, 16 and 17, as the dates on which the great gathering of the traveling men and their samples will be held in this city. The merchants will invite those commer- cial men with whom they are dealing to be here at that time. A paper hanger named James Brad- ley, while at work at & house on Bancroft street sat down on a §porsh to cool off and leaning himself on & rail became dizzy, fell backward a distance of twenty feet, turning & somersault and striking on his feet without receiving any injury. The showman whom Officer O'Brien arrested for fighting was yesterday fined #1460, He had no money sottle with, but offered an order on the treasurer of Forepaugh's show for the amount, together with $1.50 for the officer's trouble in going over the river to get the money on the order. O'Brien went to Omaha, and when he got there the showman gave him the laugh, The officer had no jurisdiction in Omaha, and the order was{not paid, so thejofficer came ‘back with no cash, Worse than all else, the showmen pouncel onto O'Brien and -were going to *‘do him up,"” o that ho did well to get away with & whole skin, the showmen being evidently determined 10 get even with the Counci! A Blacksmitl's Hoarded and Hidden Gold Stolen from HisShop, The following petition was being circu- lated yosterday, and receiving numerous signatures: Coundi, Brurrs, July 22, 1884.—To the honorable mayor and city council of Council Bluffs, —Gentlemen-—We the un- ersignod residents and tax payers of the Fourth ward, living west of Indian creek would respectfully represent to your hon- orablo body that we labor under great disadvantages and, indeed, hardships by reason of the overflow of surplus water from said Indian creek,and we would further roprosent that the bed of said croek 18 continually being filled up and the banks cut by washing, and further that the artiiicial outlets such as culverts and ditches are entirely blocked by the street car track dump and Union Pacific railway track when they cross the same, and further, that the ditches are otherwiso obstructed by the ordinary ac- cumulation therein so that they are prac- tically useless as conveyances of surplus water. We would therefore respectfully submit that tho pressnce of standing- John Hordley, of Neola, was in the city yesterday and told the story of his losing his accumulated wealth which he had carefully hidden away in his shop. Heo had, whilein Minnesota, accumulat- od somo five hundred dollars, and when coming to Neola some months ago he brought this money with him in the form of gold, and had added to it from time to time until he had over six hundred dol- lars. Hehad hidden the money in his bel- Towsin his shop, thero being 30 gold pieces, 25 gold piece, a §5 bill, and eight or nino dollars in silver, making in all 619, Ho did not supposo that anyone knew whero the money was hidden, but it seems that he must have been watched, forin the morning ho found that tho blacksmith shop had been broken into and the money taken from the bellows. Ho had his suspicions_that a man named M. J.
