Retarn of the }ialional Republican Com- mitteeman, What He Has to Say Concerning the Outlook In the East, Hon, Church Howe, member of the national republican committee, returned to Nebraska yesterday, after an absence of five weeks in the east. He attended the national committee meeting on the 26th of June in New York, and was ap- pointed a member of the executive com- mittee. Mr. J. Clarkson of Des Moines, and Mr, Howe wero appointed a special sub-committee to visit Mr. Blalne and consult about the campaign. Mr. Howe spent considerable time in Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Indiana, and a representative of Tur Bee interviewed him regarding the situation in the east Mr. Howe, who conaulted Henry Cabot Lodge, chairman of the Massachusetts state central committee, and other leading republicans, feels satis- fed that the grand old commonwealth will roll up her usual large republican majority, Heis quite confident that the republicans will carry New York. ~ All the labor associations of New York will be forced to be against Cleveland and for Blaine, There is no disputing the fact that Blaine hasa very large following among the Irish and the Catholics, not only in New York, but all over the country. Mr. Howe is also satisfied that the ropublicans will cariy I[ndiana, as Hendricks has not added any strongth to the democratic_ticket. _The reports received from Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Florida are very encouraging. Since the nomina- tion of Cleveland the republicar: commit- teo feel greatly encouraged. 1f it could have named the democratic candidate, it certainly would have selected Cleveland as the man who could be most easily beaten by Blaine. The democratic sol- diers everywhere are everywhere dissat- isfied with the ticket because the soldier element was ignored. They wanted Rosecrans in place of Hendricks. ; Mr, Howe will devote nearly all his time between now and November to the interests of the campaign in Nebraska. —e—— A General Row, Monday night a general row occurred at the corner of Fourteenth and Webster streets. An old gentlman by the name of Huff rents the lower part of his house toa man by the name of Holland. ~ Last night Holland and his wife got into an altercation with the old man, Huff, and went up stairs and proceeded to give him a good beating. They had the old man upon the floor and were pounding him in good shape, when Frank Case and Emery Winn, who live next door, came to the old gentleman’s assistance and took Holland and his wife down stairs. Hol- land then blew a police whistle and had both Case and Winn arrested. While the officers wero on their way to the place Holland drew a revolver on Winn and threatened to shoot him, A number of complaints were filed on boih sides in police court yesterday and bail was given by all parties for appearance in two weeks, ANOHER STORY. Yesterday it was reported, onIwhat seems to be good authority, that the pros- ecution: of the gamblers is not to con- scientiously énforce the city ordinances but it is in furtherance of the orders of ex-Mayor Chase. It is reported that Marshal Cumings made five different cails upon Mr. Chase Monday, after which the warrants against the gamblers were sworn out and placed in the hands of an officer to serve. Mayor Murphy says that the marshal is acting in this matter without any or- ders from him, We have no means of knowing whether the reports about the visits of the mar- shal to ex-Mayor Chase are true, but the report gives coloring to the suspicion that there is an attempt being make to run the witnesses against Chase and Guchrie out of town, A good deal of comment has been caus ed by the open intimacy of Marshal Cum- mings with Frank Walters, who has been in his company night and day since he was appointed. It is notorious that Frank Walters was more or less a go-be- tween for Chase and Guthrie, aud it is suspected that he is now trying to ma ke a tool of Cummings in the interest of the deposed mayor. e — The New School House, At the meeting of the special commit- too consisting of Mossrs, Parker, Con- noyer, Gibbon and Livisey, of the board of education, tho question of the accept- ance of the Leavenworth and King street school houses was discussed. 1t was finally determined to have the differ- ences settled by experts who should re- port to the board. The committee claims that the chimneys, black-board, locks and other minor items do not cor- respond with the plans and spcifications. It was carried to invite architects to pre- sont at the moeting of the board, nexi;Monday night, their plans for the addinon to the Hartman street school and for the West Omaha school building to be built, POWDER knew no reason why such should be done any more than in the case of the New York Central Ag to his visit here, it had no reference to his private interests, although he would visit the workshops of the road to-day, Absolutely Pure.
