It is now a fine musical organization and the boys are playing some excellent music. The Opening of the July Races at the Driving Park Yesterday, A Fine Field of Horses and First- Class Raoces. Horses Driven to Win ana the Best Animals Won Their Respective Races, The opening of the July races of the Omaha driving park association took place yesterday. Notwithstanding the fact that the mercury marked 102 de- grees in the shade a good sized crowd, for the first day, was present and there is overy prospect for a most successful meeting threughout. The judges were Mr, A..J. Hancock, starter; Mr, Rheuben Wood and Mr, W. J. Jackman, of the Omaha Herald, The track was in excellent condition and the horses sweat out beautifully and aside from the excessive heat, eovery- thing was as favorable as could be asked for. The first race was the 2:45 class, with five mcarters, John ()., Budd Doble, Frank Gray, St. Nicholas and Theodore, Light Bird being drawn. The horses were called promptly at half past two o’clock and before the drivers were put up they were called up in front of the judge’s stand and Mr Hancock proceed- ed to read theriot act in good strong horse language. He wld them plainly that no foolishnees would be allowed, that the races must be driven for blood and that any man whom the judges sus. pected of pulling his horse would be sus- peaded and a new driver put up. Also that any horse, scoring and coming to the wire in the lead of the pole horse, bar- ring breaks or accidents, would be fined, With these few gentle reminders, the drivers were allowed to take thelr seats. After two ineffectual attempts the horses got away in good shape. Theodore immediately went to the front, but upon the second turn went into a bad break. He squared himself again and passed the half mile post a good two lengths in the lead of the field, which was in a bunch, with the exception of St. Nicholas who secor.d 2 Girl third, Mattie Harle fourth, u.. McFadden fifth, The horses were started with very little trouble, but Country Girl was unsteady, and loft her feet upon getting the word, and behaved badly throughout the heat. Maywood went to the front and kept that position until they tarned into the stretoh, when McFadden overhauled her, and the result was a beautiful and close race between the two horses to the finish, McFadden winning by a neck, Maywood second, Mattie Harle third, Moses fourth, and Country Girl distanced. Time, 2:20}, In therecord heat Mattie Harle broke badly on the first turn, Maywood went to the front and baffled all attempts to head her, winning the heat with McFad- den lapping her in second place, Mattie Harle third and Moses, distanced. Time, 2:304. Before sterting the third heat the judges announced that they suspicioned that Mr. Harle was not driving Mattie Harle to win the race and removed him from the sulky, putting up Mr, Ingram to steer the littlo mare, Mr. Harle pro- tested and declared he was driving the horse to win, but the judges were fixed in their determination and Mr. Ingram mounted the sulky. After getting the word Mattie Harle went into a bad break and was left a long way in the rear but upon getting level again closed up the gap rapidly. Inthe meantime Maywood and McFadden were pacing neck and neck. At the one-half mile pole Mcl'ad- den went to the front and kept it to the finish, with Maywood second and Mattie Harle third. Time, 3:34}. Tn the fourth hoat Mr. Hagle was again between the horses was a very close and exciting one. McFadden was the winner with Maywood second and Mattie Harle third. SUMMARY. Mecl'adden. Maywood. . Mattie Harlo. ....... Moses............... Connty Girl ... Time 2:2p}, 2:308, 2: MINOR The races throughout were excellent and created considerable excitement. The starting of Mr. Hancock was ver satisfactory both to the horsemen an spectators. A large delegation of Council Bluffs people in carringes and headed by the Bavarian band, came over and were in attendance at the races, which fact added te the afternoon’s enjoyment. BEarly in the afternoon the canvass coy- ering the wheel of fortune took ftire from a cigar butt which had been thrown upon it, and for a few minutes there was some excitement in that locality. The can- vass was lowered and the fire extinguished was away back. Theodore kept the lead not, however, until a large hole had been 34 put up behind Mattie Harle, and the race | DOUGLAS COUNTY'S WEALTH.
