Harris, of the Daptist church, preached a ser mon upon the lawyers of the city of which the following is & synopsis: Titus 111., 18, “Bring Zenas tho law- yer!” Somo of the greatest minds of any age have been found in the legal profession, such men as Blackstone, Wilburforce, Sir Thomas More, Wobster, Rufus Choate, Daly, and others of equal fame. I havoattended our court, occassionally, to see the men who are in the legal pro- presion in this city. What wo find to be true here, will be true in reform to the profession in any city. Woe find in the logal fraternity in this city men of more than_ordinary ability, men of sterling worth and purity, men who have achioved success by hard work. ve genius is helpful, but native genius has not yet been born with Blackstones commen- taries in his brain. Some of the strongest supporters of christianity have born those in the legal profossion, Blackstone, Ferlinghuysen, Judge Daly, Campbell, and Webster. Tho apostie Paul speaks of *Zonas a lawyer,” of his day, and he was no doubt an carnest suporter of Christian- it) ¥ ery profession however has had to suffer moro or less by the wrong doi of ill-disposed men in the profession: There has been and is & prejudico against the profesion. Prejudice created by corrupt and unprincipled lawyers, In this city we have much of this prejudice, and especially at the present time, as Jur city-attorney has taken the position ho has in the defense of our ex-mayor, who - has been indicted by the grand jury for bribery. The city attorney was appointed to advise, and also to protect the interest of this city. You are taxed to support him. He earns a salary at your hands, and now he steps into’ the court and defends a city official accused of crime. He thereby betrays the confidence of the judge. A lawyer who will do this, cannot find any justifiable grounds for his position and ought to be debarred. 1t the city attorney felt that the ex- mayor is innocent, and desired therafore to defend him in the trial, he ought to have resigned his position and said to the common council, **I believe Mr, Chase is innocent of the crime charged and here is my resignation, 1 step dowu and out, and will defend him.” That would have been honorable. No one could have found any fault with that action. Inall positions of trust we need honost men, and we need honest men as municipal oflicers. Tf any one however, will study careful- ly the legal profession he will find that it 13 no easy matter to be an honest lawyer: becayse there are so many temptations connected with the profession. First. A desire to build up a reputa- tionat the sacrifico of justice if noos- sary. Second, Money temptation is very great. No easy matter when a lawyer is closeted in his oflice with a corrupt man who desires to defraud_his creditors by hiding his property and offers a large fee for advice as to how he can do it and es- cape, to say to him, *‘Sir, you have not money enough to hire me to advise you to rob; my advice is, pay your debts. Third, The nature of the profession tends to lay out all religious connections and emotions. But a_very few lawyers Many; who were christians when they entered the profes- sion soon lost their religious life. They could not resist the temptations. I be- lieve that it is possible for & lawyer to be a christian, for we have noble examples. But these men were true men, and had a high ideal of their profession, also of a true Chris- tian life. They have honored both the ’ | profession and the Christian: church. I would say to those who are in the { legal profession, forget not that there isa higher court than any earthly court, and sooner or later you must there stand. You cannot then make a motion to quash an indictment, nor plead statute limita- tion, nor move to appeal to a higher court. That is the highest court. The judge who sits on the bench is the supreme judge. He will decide all matters justly. An eminent jurist once said ‘to a body of young men who were just entering the profession, ‘“Remember that the last cause you try will be your own. 1 am thankful tnat I have several young lawyers who are members of this church In closing I wish to say, *Carry your christian life to your cflice, into the court room, and 1f ever you sit on the bench as judge carry it there. Be a christisn everywhere, Manifest it in your profes- sion. Be manly, courteous, and neve boorigh nor impolite in the court. Never stoop to abusive language, nor resort to trickery, but be a gentleman, Present the law, the facts and the merits of the case in an_open, frank and manly way, and you will be sucecasful and honored by ail, and honor your profession. Show to the world that it is possiblo for a law- yer to be a christian; and when your work is finished the judge of all carth will send a messenger as Paul did to Titus, ‘“‘bring Tenas, the lawyer.” And then you shall be christened a jurist and king in the world where there wiil be no strife nor need of courts of equity or of adjudi- cation, Unconfirmed Nominations, WasHINGTON, July 8. ~The following nom inations were Inade by the president during the session just ended which were not con- firmed: Postmastars—Charles Adams, Fort Worth, Toxas; Soth H. Indications to-night point to their casting at loast & por- tion of vote for Hoadley, whose name will be put in nowinationif Thurman’s friends insist on presenting the latter's name after Hoadley. The anti-Thurman votes in Ohio will probably go to Cleveland. Ohio holds a caucus in the morning before entering the convention, Thurmans friends to-night stated that mavy routhern delegates bave de- od their intention of supporting him. 1t herefore probable that Thurman’s name will be presented, no matter what the outcome of the caucus, for Thurman, gation on pre THE SOUTIH. In regard to the vote on the unit rule in the pvention, General Black, of Tlinois, said he thought it was made up of four elements, First, nearly all of Cleveland's strength; second, the lingering sentiment of states as_indioated in the South Carolina hird, the power of the machine; fourth tion to refuse any demand of Kelly, OTHER TEMPORARY OFFICERS, IN ADDITION TO CHATRMAN, At the ¢ usion of Hubbard's speech th rest of the temporary organization was an nounced as follows: Temporary 0w Frederick 0, of Massachuset L.
