A, Denton. It appears that Denton had been given the contract for filling up Kighth street, from Third to Fifth avenue, at 22 cents o yard. Some of the property owners interested had advanced him money from time to time to keep him along until he could get his certificate on completion of the work. The work is now completed, but the council for some reason best known to the members, ro- fuses to give him the certificate. Some say that the protext offered is that Denton had somo understanding with the property owners. Others The Firm of Michaels Bros, Have Had Their Front Doors Shut, The jowelry firm of Michacls Bros, had their establishment on Broadway closed yostorday on a clatm of $1,250 held by J. At a club dioner in New York recent- ly, & examining surgeon related the fol- lowing incident, showing how the arrears act developed pensioners out of sound and undeserving men. During the war he was surgoon of an_infantry regiment. When the regiment first went into battle ha observed, sitting bohind a big tree, at a safo distance from the fighting line, the captain of one of the companies, ““What are you doing hore, captain?” asked the doctor. “U'm not feeling well,” replied the off cer, in a doleful voice, The surgeon was (00 busy looking after the wounded to stop and inquire as to his complaint. A fow woeeks later the regi- ment again got under fire, aud the sur- goon found tho same captain skulking be- hind a barn, ¢ “Hello! sick again?” ho exclaimed, “‘Well, the fact is, doctor, I'm not ex- nctly sick, 1 may as well own up thav I'm a coward, There's no help for it. However this may be, Denton, to protect himself, has brought suit. After the adjournment of the council, and the mayor, city attorney, and others had gathered at the Rroadway council chambgr, the mayor went down into his pocket and brought out the crumpled notice, remarking, ‘‘Here's the darned thing now ; I didn't want those nows- paper fellows to get a hold of it. The amount claimed is about $800. Just why the council should be afraid to do its business above boardis a mystery, but if there is business to be performed on tl:m (buiot, committee roomsshould be provided, o that meetinga would not be necessary under somebody's else gas- light, and before sometody’s else mirror. The case was heard by Judge Mallory, of the muicipal court, who absolutely refus- ed to impose a fine, although friends of the prisoner stood ready with money. Miss Curbis and George Daniels were walking along Mitchell street on Sunday morning last, when Martin came up, threw his arms around the girl, and kiss- ed her with much feeling. When Den- iels attempted to interfere Martin hit him on the head with a stone. He then returned to Miss Curbis and, after kiss- ing her repeatedly knocked her down. e e— ries Pilos aro frequently proceded by a sonse of weight in the back, loins and lower part of the abdomen, cansing the patient to suppose he has 2ome afleation of the kidneys or nelghboring FINISHED THEIR COURSE. The last do not often get to bed until nearly sunrise. They have an enormous amount of business to transact after nightfall, and they go trotting around their oval tank for hours at & time, or make desper- ate efforts to climb up its sloping sides and run away. During the day they are asleep, but the darkness makes them as lively as crickets, The prairie dogs retire with the light, withdrawing below the surface of the sandy desert in which they live, and leaving txe tops of their holes unguarded, The wolves and foxes walk in their sleep. The bears lie in lumpish quiet upon the rocky bottoms of their pits, The deer and buffalo chew their cuds solomnly and breathe heavily. The white rabbits sit waving their ears and opening and shutting their pink eyes. The seal snores. As they lie slumbering uneasily on the rocks in their tank their snores may be heard a considerable distance away, The snores of one of them greatly puzzled a new watchman a short time ago, He heard it as he yas passing, and wondered where it came from, Finding a solitary man sitting on a bench not far off the ~watch- man told him he must do his sleeping at home. “I waen't asleep,” man. “Yes you were,” said the watchman, “I saw you.” The watchman went away, Coming back presently he again heard the snores. Runhingf to the solitary man the vigilant officer shook him up roughly and told him to go home. The solitary man objected, and the matter was ~ only sottled by the seal beginning to snore again, § ok and Baker, PARTING SON High School ( —— Exrna waiters have been secured and will be in attondance at W.
