Its Action on the Bridge Bill and the Unjust Attack on the Or- ganization, The action of the Loard of trade taken inits meocting of April 14, urging Con. gressman Pusey to use his efforts to se. curing the passage of some bill for a bridge between this city and Omaha, has now called out a savage snarl from the Nonpareil. It has been commonly re- ported that ita former editor, John W, Chapman, is now in the employ of the Union Pacific railway, using his energies to defeat any and all bridge enterprises coming into conflice with the present U, P. monopoly. Doubtless the action of the board of trade is a stumbling block to Chapman’s lobbying schemes, and al tiough he has now no public connection with the Council Bluffs organ of the Union Pacific, still the anunus of the uptack on the board of trade is so appar- cit 8 to appear to have emanated from this source, Because the board of trade wants a bridge between the two cities, the organ of the Union Pacific in this city calls ou the board to disorgamze, and let its placo be filled by a committes of five, wh - call a citizens' meoting when any matior of public interest needs discussion oraction, Who are the men whom the U. The picture was painted in a wooden bowl and represented a forest in winter, From the centre of the bottom of the bowi, the sun was peeping over the trec tops, throwing its rays over a number of deer, which were very neatly executed, Joe Spaulding, the lotter oarrier, has completed the canvass of his district for the postal directory andis now on regular duty. He has gathored up the names of persons living in his district, and has them neatly arranged in a little book. Every letter carrier is to do the samo so that a complete directory of the city is thus in their hands, and it will not only facilitate the delivery of mails, but will serve as a convenience in learning the whereabouts of any person whose donce is unknown to the enquirer. The alderman had a three-ring circus yesterdsy, They met as & board of equalization, and took back most of the proposed raizos of assossment, on the complainants filing affidavits that the amount given to the asseasor was correct, The {proposed assessment of the banks was also cut off, The aldermen met also a8 a board of health, and appointed Mr, Siedentopf a committee to look up some location where all the garbage of the city could be dumped, The aldermen also meot as a council, audited a fow bills, and adjourned until next Monday night. Mr, Crook, of Honey Creek, who had his thumb injured by a runaway about ten days ago, died yesterday morning. He was a strorg, healthy man, and the injury was not thought to be serious, but a day or two ago it grew worse ; lockjaw set in, amputation of the thumb became necessary, and even that did not save his life. It will be remembered thatsoon after the injury Mr. Crovk had the mis- fortuue of losing by fire his store and contents, while ho and his family barely escaped with their lives, 1t seems, in his case at least, that trouble does not come singly. The Nonpareil yesterday boasted that its Thursday's issue contained *‘ten solid columus of telegraph news.” The fact is, as any one can see by looking at a copy of that date, that it had but 7} columns of telegraph, and also had 7} columns filled with old stereotype plates, which it fails to mention. The DaiLy Bk on the samo day had over eleven columns of telograph, and its other reading matter was frech and newsy instead of being worn out plates, which had been carted about the country. With 11 columns of telegraph news to the Nonpareil's T3 col- the rules adoptcd by the man named above, including three from the Nonpa- reil officn itself, but was also in accor- dance with the well-known views of a largo majority of the members as ex- pressed in previous meotings. On the 29th of January there wasa very full attendance, and the following sction was taken as shown by the min- utes: “The Pusey bridge bill having been wmade a special order for the evening, a apecial reading of the bill was called for. W. F. Sapp, from the special comm- ittee appointed to draft & substitute for the Pusey bill, submitted the Hepburn bill, which was introduced into the 48th congress, with recommendation that it be s0 amended as to change the names of the incorporations, and to make the bridge a combined railroad and wagon hridge, and fixing the amount of toll to be charged. “The Hepbarn bill was then read, and the merits of tho two bills were discuss- ed at length by members of the board. *4J, T, Hart movod that the substitute offered by the committeo bo so amended as to make the bridge & combined bridge. Carried; and all the amendments rec- ommended by the committee were ad- opted. “‘The substitute was then referred back to the commwitice, with instructions to in- sort the amendments, and when so insor- ted, to sond copy to Mr. Pusey and ask lim to endeavor, if possible, to secure its passage.” By this and previous actions of the board, it is apparent that the majority of the board, by official expressions, are in favor of & bridge between the two citios, and the organ of the Union Pacific cannot got around it by sneering at small at- tendance, and declaring that the board of trade has fallen into ill repute. The threo Nonpareil members of the board should put in a personal appear- ance ut the mostings, and make their ob- jeotions ihere, instoad of acquiescing in the action by their absence and silence, and then, weeks afterwards, denouncing the body of which they are a part. The board of trade needs some reviving influences and frosh inspiration rather than abuse and disorganization, A glancs at the records of the last few years thows that the board has been largely instrumental in securing and aid- ing the most important improvements made in Council Bluffs, 1is first aid in the matter of pers ment was in the s ot the best sys. tom of water works possessed by any western city. It did much to secure to this city the mammoth agricultural ware- houses which have added so much to the name and prosperity of our city, It has heen foremost in the securing of & raised grado for the atreets, so as to secure a system of sewerage. It has done the greater part toward securing the appro- Driations for the new government build ing here. 1t taok hold of the new opera house enterprise and but for its actions and subseriptions that beautiful building would probably have been still a thing of the future, It has been larg:ly instru- mental in getting the main thoroughfares of this city paved, and securing the need umns, Tus Bee saw noocearion to make | «d logislation for the issuing of the nec extra comment, a8 with 11 columns it | “ssary bonds, ete. waan't considered very much of a tele- giuph day for Tue Bex. o ——— Bushnell sells railroad tickets cheap to | take Foll of all points, These are some of the more important matters in which it has buen actively engaged and to which it has given great help, % There are many other enterprises which the board should and there should be a Livelior interest] taken in its meetings, b+t with its reecrd, with the names which Regular dinner, 85 cents, from 11:30 | appear among its sotive members, with 10 2 o'clock, for gentleman at Chria,|(ho need of such wn- organization Botwonger's, 108 blaws slivets W e in Foor grace for : Ber has ¢ d often of late Lt erdi b i Summer silks, 85¢; Summer silks, 50c; Summer silks, 75c. tho dvsire of many ciuzons to have open- | 4 o ¢ pecial lmrgmnfl and cannot be cuplicated.
