The anminng Ei mnurhlla e Mar- shalled Under Sir Wi, Mad-tartie, An lmposing of Pot-honse COhivalry of Omaha and P Arreay arade the Str ot at Hascall's Park At about half past nine Sunday mor ning, & solitary horseman arrayed in a salt and pepper suit, with a gorgeous sash hanging ovor his shoulders, came pran cing down street ata snails pace on an ungallant steed, and stationed him self on the corner of Fourteenth and Douglas. The solitary horseman with the gorgeous sash, was none other than the Honorable William Mud-turtle grand marshall, of the Boycotters “procesh.” Sir John Falstaff commander of the ragmufling, never felt more proud than did the Honorable Bill Mud-turtle, as he surveyed the bummer brigade of which he was commander. On his richt flank marched the False Profit, Elmahdi-Kel logg O. Gouldwith his avabs bearing sloft the sacred banner, with the emblematic “Big Rat.” At some time back in an cient history, the material from which the banner was made may have been as white as Barnum’s Sacred Elephant, but as it waved proudly over the un it looked as signal of distress ameng the soiled linen of his bottle scarred veterans, To the left flank of Sir Mud-turtle was the mortar-slinger’s “plattoon, command- also mounted and besashed. Then camo Solid Trains of Elogant 1 Pullman Palice Steopiig Cars asquad of knights of the shears and o S otk ; [ needle, followed by Blackguardissimo 13, Leatost. Paul and Minneapoli Walsh mounted on foot with five or six with Reclining brick heavers and hod carriers. These were followed b, pletoon of fence art tists and cigar builders. Then came the imposing figure of the Mahdis chiof Licutenant Oaman Digma Quinn, follow- ed by the Un‘on P luhc band. **Right about face! o th deploy in_open order, march! ft flank, shouted Sir Mud-turtle, and the “procesh” counter-moved backwird to Jefferson Square where the moulders boiler-makers, tinsmiths, blacksmiths, painters, plumbers, shoemakers, machin 1st8 and three or four thousand other workingmen had been invited to join in the boycotter's parade. When Jefferson square was reached Mahdi O. Gould was dumfounded and Sir Mudturtle was speechless with dis- appointed rage. Jofferson Square was a blank space with a few trees and a band stand. The hoiler makers, moulders, blacksmiths and other workingmen de- clined the invitation to follow the wily Mahdi_into his ingenious mouse-trap. Even Bill White was among the missi So the grand marshal faced about again and the band played ‘‘When this cruel war is over.” Blackguardissmo Walsh deployed on the skirmish line on Six- teenth street and coralled about fifty small boys who were forced into line to fillup the vacuum and give the*‘procesh” appearance. As the Mahdi ard his Arabs passed the Boyd's Opera House Colonel Hines fell into tne procession bodily and after marching two or three paces, in a decid- edly unsteady gait, broke ranks and made a gallant dash for the nearest sods water stand. Barring this little inci dent, the grand boycotter’s parade passed offaccording to the programme publish- ed in the Ber of Saturday. The bear- ing of the men that marched in the pro- cession was somewhat sullen. Most of them had their slouch hats pulled down over their eyes, while marching past the Paxton asif they were not proud of their company. When the unique ‘*pro- cesh” reached Hascall's Park Mahdi O. Gould, and one of his Bashi Bazouks, stationed themselves behind the picket fence and commanded the crowd to hold up their hards. Ouly a very few of the victims were able to show up any cur rency, Then the band struck up “Never say die” and surged in. And now the picnic commenced in dead earnest and a very exciting pfenic it was. There were shoul hitters bummers loafers und lunch fiends with a thin sprinkling of re spectable poople of both sexes. Mouse trap Gould had showed his cunning in the way he disposed of privileges on the ground. The picnickers had nothing to cat except what they paid for at the lunch stand which had paid Gould a round bonus. Then there were three booths where the thirsty man could re- fresh himself and elovato his spirits They also had taken out their licence from the false Profit. Last but not least were the booths and stands let to gamb- lers who did a very proficablo business on a very small capital with gullible working First National Bank —OF OMAHA— Cor. 13th and Farnam 8ts. Forfive or six hours the jambores went on as merry as a marriage bell, A crowd of bummers from the town, in- cluding Marshal Guthrie, had joined in the festivities until thero were between three and four hundred people on the ground About H o’clock Blackardissimo Walsh and Osman Digma Quinn delivered themselves of & good, dealof pent up bile, But the bofsterous crowd which had by this time been attacked by snakes in their boots, refused to listen. While the bummers were gambling, howling and drinking, another crowd was amusing it- soli on the platform by dancing., About 8 p. m. the U. P, band, which had carned its sixtyfive dollars, was replaced by a string band, Before 9 p. m. the drunken crowd of men ot into a serimmage. The women and the few respectable men present took to their heels, and the af- fray would have resultedin u very bloody fight had not Councilman Hascall, pro- prietor, ordered them off the premises. hus ended the grand picnic, There yet remaius a sequel to this tale, When Mahdi Gould laid out his pro- gramme for the grand picnic he and his partners wore very lavish i their prom- ises, They hired the string band at four dollars for each player, with & liberal al lowance above that if the picnic “panned out” well. When the men called for their pay they were sent from Peter to Paul and back sgain, but could not get a dime, This morning they called at the Beg oflice to tell us that Gould is a fraud and his partners are deadbeats. We knew itall the time. There are probably other peaple who have claims on the imouse- trap man and cannot realize on them. WRITTEN GUARANTERS WILLIAM LYONS. The grass comes on with a bound. The flowers bloom spontaneously. The trecs, great, large, clumsy things, brace up with a dignified look of granduer, Cattle and sheep are now out upon the ranches and aredoing finely, Small grain looks surprisingly well, and the probabilities are that we will realize a yield second to none in the Unon, The buzz of the beautiful house fly again taps music on the drum of the ear, Mosquitoes are large enovgh to suck. Riverton is situated inone of the finest little valloys of the west. A regulac re publican paradise, yet the gates are not closed against any. Democrats smile all around us, and have visions of a terrible nature, The land here is graded from rolling hills into waving prairies and level flats, with & oil as rich and productive as can be foand beneath the bluy canopy of heaven, Many people in the east believe this part of Nubraska to be dry and sandy, and adapted to nothivg bub grazing pur- poses. A groator mistake could not bo wade, and the time is not far distant when this part of the state will be as valuable as can be found anywhere within its flimits, both for grazing and agriculture, Old gettlors toll me that as years roll by the raiu fall increascs, and they believe that the time has now arrived when all well directed labor will ] bo richly rewarded, And the conclusion looks very reasonable, for as the soll is stirred and tillod, it roadily absorbs not Youly the rain that falls, but it collects 2 you | ¢ You cannot | 15884, dampness from tho air, and not only this for it acquires a cortamnmoisture from be. The theory that w have rain here because wo are wost of iy meridian that th the Gulf of Mexico Had wo none but north and south winds, then it might hold true, but as it is, with the winds blowing from overy quarter, as the dampness is wafted from the gulf to the north, it is as apt as any way to meot a cross current blowing from the east, and thus give us in the west all the advan tago that can be claimod in any of the linstorn states, Another favorable fea ture for this country is this: We have scarcely sny mud hero, the soil being of that nature to absorb the rain quickly as it falls, One might think that such a soil wouldnot hold the dampnees, but such is not the case for thero is ;no place where crops will grow with so small an amount of rain than here.
