COUNCIL BLUFFS. ADDITIONAL LOCAL, NEW FIERCE FLAMES, They Lap up ajPortion of the O1d Tron Foundry, About b o'clock yesterday morning an alarm of fire was caused by the discovery of smoke isssuing from tho old foundry and iron works Main The flamos sproad rapldly, and buened off the roof of the brick part of the structure and done charring of the adjoining buildings. Much of the machinery here- tofore in use there by the Courcil Bluffs iron works company had been 10 moved to their new building, wo that there was not much to damage in that line. The damage to the building was about £1,000. The most serious loss was of patterns, most of them being buined, Just what is the loss from this, 1t is difli cult to determine, as patterns are esti- mated differently by different parties. The patterns which were burned cost originally from $10,000 to 30,000, but many of them were old, and many of no use whatever. It was the intention of the company to sort them over soon, and romove the useful and valuable ones to their new building. Probably $2,000 to £2,600 will enable the company to replace all the patterns destroyed, that they really noed. The cause of the fire 18 unknown but is thought t» have been incendiariem, as there had been no fire about the place for some time previous, The fire department was watched rather closely in its workings owing to the recent disorganization and reorgani- zation of the department, and some of the comments of bystanders were not very complimentary, the department seeming to get confused and not knowing exactly what had better ba done. The flames had pretty much their own way, and if there wore no horrible blunders on the part of the fire force thero was noth- ing to call forth any loud compliments. There was no insurance on ths property, 80 the loss falls on the company. There was also in the building at the time of the fire, a dynamo befonging to the electric light company, and this was badly damaged. It cost about 4,00, but the extent of the damage cannot be ascertained until 1t is overhauled. A BOLD ROBBERY, on street, considerable wooden A Thief ts Away With a Pocket Book From J. J, Maurath's Residence, Saturday evening Mrs. J. J. Maurath, whose husband is employed at Z. T. Lindsay & Co.’s, had just returned home, and was about placing her pocketbook upon the dresser in her room, when, glancing in the mirror, she saw the re- flection of a strange man standing in the room just behind her, The suddenfright caused her to faint away, and the thief taking advantage of her condition grabbed the pocket book containing 15 and hur- ried out. Mrs. Maurath is unable to give any very clear description of the man, and the chances are that he will not be caught. e —— The Educated Canines, This 1s what the Urbana, O., News says of Prof. Morris’ trained dogs: Last night Prof. Morris gave an exhi- bition of his trained dogs to an audience that almost filled the opera house with its presence and more than filled it with ap- plause. The exhibition is one of the most remarkable of the kind we have ever scen, and marks a high degree of in telligence on the part of the dogs, and al- most unlimited patience on the part of the instructor, while the evident friend- ship of the dogs for their trainer showed an excellent mutual feeling the secret of their success. Some of the feats, such as walking on the tight rope, were difficult in the extreme, but all were performed successfully. Joe Howard thus describes the sceno upon the stage during the Abbey benefit in New York. Were you ever on a theat- rical stago during the progress of a mixed entertainment! Fun is just the word for it. On this occasion there was no stago manager, The bill was decidedly mixed. Campanini was out of sorts, Mme. Nilsson had been told to bo there by 9 o'clock sharp, aud it was nearly midnight before sho had & chanco to ap poar. In great impatience and consider- ablo anger she paced her room like a lio- ness. Kvery malo artist had his wifo or some particular friend with him. Tho chorus girls were numerous, and, each with her flame, made things (uh\m\xly livoly. Irving's seventy people, and any quantity Y| of laudy- swolls, who appeared to think that it was a groat thing to bo on the stage, whero they had nothing to do_and wero in everybody's way, were aleo there. It was a Sembrich fight. The little lady in the Barbiere made her accustomed stroke by tho singing of Proch’s air with variations, so that oven Patti was ccm- polled to stop her talk and lovel her glass tull at her, taking it all in with evident amazement and surprise, and at the close she joined heartily, or at all events effu- sively, in the tremendousove on which followed. Subsequently Sembrich play- ed aviolin concerto with orchestral accom- paniment, which pleased tho house so much that an encore was demanded, when sho gave Chopin's waltz on the pinno, which in its turn plonsed so much that a second encore was demanded and then sho sang somothing, 1 forgot what, whurnupun Campanini, who was nmmluu, m the wing with his warpaint and spang- los on, ready for Aidi, shrugged his shoulders, threw up both hands, and mid: “Vell, sho play the fiddle, sho play the piano, sho sing, what now?
