EREE LUNCH EVERY DAY, @My triouos are w1l invited, ap 10w, IN OFFICE HALY A CENTURY, Some 014 Men Who Ilogan to Serve Uncld Sam Fity Years Ago, (Now York Sun.| W asHiNToN, (D, C..), April 2.—Fifty yoars ago to-day, James Lawrenson of Maryland, received an appointment to 8400 clerkship in the clerkship in the Post-oflice Dopartment. He celebrated the semi-centennial of his servico by tak- ing & half holiday from [his desk in the Dead Letter Office, and receiving ho con- gratulations of his friends. He was a clerk in the Post office at Baltimore for yoars beforo ho came to Washington, so that he has been in the employe of the government for sixty years and in age as woll as longth of servico is the oldest of Uncle Sam’s hired men. During near- ly a quarter of a century Mr. Lawrenson | acted in the capacity of correspondent for the Baltimere Sun, and has the addi- tional honor of being the oldest journal- ist in Washington. He is still in good health and able to regularly perform the duties of his office, although discipline is a little relaxed in his favor. Wm, T. Berry was Post-master tien- eral when Lawrenson came in, and An- drew Jackson was President. Bofore Berry's time the Postoffice Department Printing Office are now, but Jackson in- vited him to a seat in the cabinet in de- fiance of precedents and against the protests of John C. Calhoun, who was Secretary of Stateand a great stickler for otiquette, The only authority the Postmastor-General has for a seat in the Executive Chamber jis Andrew Jwckson's invitation to Barry, Seventy clerks did the Postoflice Department in those days, and three mon were assigned to the mail morgue, It requires over 1000 now to open, read, return, or destroy the dead Jotters that come in at the rate of 2,000,- 000, a year. Uncle Jimmy Marr, the venerable chief clerk of the First Assistant Post- master-General, antedates .an‘vmnnunu service by three years, having been ap- pointed toaclorkehip on the 20th of June 1831, There are also several Post- masters who hold commissions older than his, although, iucluding his service in the Baltimore postoffice, Lawrenson heads the list of veterans, Lindley Mure, the venerable old negro who sits at _the ma- hogmy door which leads to th‘n beautiful office of the Secrotary of the Navy, comes second, with a service of fifty-six years, having been appointed in 1828 by “Sam- uel Southard; and the third on the list is the Hon. William Hunter, Second Assistant Secrotary of State. A clerk- ship was given to him by Martin Van Bureu in 182, and he has been promot- od from time to time. He reached his present position under John- son's administration, and Mr. Marr is the fourth on the list. There are a number of clerks in the departments who have seen forty, and some have seen forty-five years of service i The oldest Postmaster is Roswell Beardsley of North Lansing, Tomkins county, N. Y., whose mission bears the date of June 28, 1828. Postmaster Stab- ler of Sandy Springs, Md., was appoint- ed a few months before Beardsley, but he died a year ago. John Bowdish of Rural Grove, Montgomery County, N. Y., was appointed Postmaster on December !0, 1830, and now occupies the same office in which he opened his first mail more than fifty-threo years ago. During this time he has received the princely salary of $93 a year; and admistrations have come and gone, political parties have ris- en and died of decay, but he has' never failed to draw his quarterly allowance of $23 83}. 2 A surprising case is that of George Hil- ton, who was appointed postmaster at South Parsonfield, York County, Me., on the 27th of December, 1830. His sal- ary was $35 a year during this time, but at the end of the fifty-second year of his service he resigned the office with all the its honors and emoluments, and uk'ed as a special favor that Alphous H. Hilton, his son, a youth of sixty-four summors, might be appointed in his stead. Uncle Jimmy Marr is orthodox in his religious belier, and was once discuseing theology with Colonel Ingersoll. The lat- ter told him he ‘*‘couldn’t see how hell could have any terrors for a man who had been in the Postoflice Department for fifty-three years.” —— CAUTION, No. 219 GrAND STREET, Jersey Crry, N, J., Feb. 28, 1883, Two months ago I suffered with a very bad cough, which kept me awake all night. T was recommended to put on my chest two Allcock’s Porous Plasters. ~ Unfor- tunately my druggist persuaded mo to try some other so-called porous plaster, I lost my maney, for they were worthless and not of the slightest benefit. 1 then procured Allcock’s Porous Plasters, and they completely cured me. An information was lodged against him, charging him with with us ing the mails 'with intent to defraud. Omana, May 2, 1884, To the Editor of The Bae y Woalways understood and believed that you aro a friend of the laborer, notwith- standing the late strike of your printers, which spoaks for itself. Evory laboring man knows that in past troubles hero you have beon she only man that had the pluck and courage to stand by labor in defiance of monopolies. As an employe of the Union Pacific railroad for many years, 1 have always been woll paid and well treated by our old ofticials—such men as 8, H, H. Clark, J. T. Clark, at present with the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, Mr. Kimball, Mr., Shelby, and others of the old officials, We lived and prospered under them. Wo admire those men and would do anything 1n our power that was just and right. We feel that they were our our friends, and 1 know that we were friends to them and their interests. But we are sorry to say, it seems that these Boston parties have, through their board of directors, sent men here to re-model and convert the em- ployes of the U. P. railioad in accordance with the Boston views and the Y, M. C. A. and puritanical laws, the offspring of those who used to burn witches. All I have to say at present to Mr. Auditor Young, the great reformer of morals, is, Please go back home to your parents, They might want to seo you once moro as they saw you last. Fill yourself up with pork and beans and codfish, and if you should happen to explode wo vill try and bear our happy aflliction tho best wo can. P. S.—-Now, Mr. Young, you are too Young to be west as far as you are at present. Just taka a rest until you are older. Lay off on your pork and beans and grow fat and be happy. Exrrove or ik U, P. R, R, — Want of Faith. If Schroder & Becht, the druggists, donot suc ceed it is not for the want of faith. They have such faith in Dr. Bosanko's Cough and’ Lung syrup as a remedy for Colds, Consumption, snd Tung affoctons, that they sill give & bottl free to each and every one who is in need a fo medicine of this kind e —— Attemryt to Abduct, CLEVELAND, May 2.—A bad attemut was made Jast dight to abduct Lucia Zarate, a Moxican midget on cxhibition at the Dime Museum. Two men man- aged to steal her from the dressing room while left alone a minute. Chase was made and the abductors seen but they dropped her and escaped. This is the third attempt to kidnap her. The sup- posed object is to hold her for a ransom. o ——— A Happy Family.
