Business on the Wabash has let up so that only one passenger traina day will be run in and oat of thie city. The threatened injunction to the pav- ing work on Main street has been done away with by the agreement of the city to give Mr. Stewart $1,000 for damages to his building by the change of grade, Business was so dull at the transfer yesterday that all the platform men were given a day's lay-off except five men, who were given the pleasure of helping the car repairers by picking up old iron, ete. About twenty teamsters quit work and stood about excitedly talk- ing over the situation, expressing indig- nation at what they term Hattenhauer's mulishness in not turning aside. this May day carnival at the rink this eve- ning. They have secured the west store of the new opera houss, and #8 soon as the carpenters can get it fitted up, will put in & full line of ladies’ furn- ishing goods. The enterprise promises rich success in their hands, and will be put in active operation in a day or two. While workmen were engaged tearing down the old Bluff City engine house yes- terday, several of them were on the sec- ond floor when the joists began giving way. The men sprang for the walls and clung to the window sills while the whole floor foll with aterrible crash. Strangely enough no one was hurt, but a whiter- faced group of men never climbed down rescuing ladders, ) The council has decided to give Mr. B. Williams, of Chicago, $1,600 as trav- eling expenses, for preparing plans for gowering the city. Thesystem, in gener- al outline, proposed by Mr. Williams is to widen Indian creek, and deepen it and to carry the water from the upper part of the city directly into this, A sewer is to be constructed on Broadway or running parallel to it, running to the 'lfnlty of the Northwestern depot and @ to the river. e — Iowa's Bad Boy. 4 boy aged about eight years has an- woyed the Mills street school a good deal flate. Mr. Hat tenhauer came along in a light buggy, and met & teamster with a load of dirt Mr. Hattenhauer was on the right hand side of the avenue and claimed the right ot way. The teamster had his wagon on the same side but could not turn out on account of the rats now in tho strest. Ar both rigs could not pass on the same track they came to a stand.still, each re- fasing to yiold, and the officers of the law were called on. Quite a crowd Fred. E. Moore is canvassing the city for the purpose of showing how to put & polish on shirts, collars and cuffs. In. stead of fnveigling them into investing in some aow-fangled and expensive polish- ing iron, ho simply converts an ordinary sad-iron into the best sort of a polisher, and shows them how to use it. He has introduced the system into Tur Bre family, causing peace and harmony to be restored to the household, and no more grumbling on the part of the weary edi- tor about his linen. Thanks to the young man, Trne Bee is getting to be quite a dude—in linen at least, The two young fellows, Trevitt and McDonald, were before Judge Ayles- worth yesterday to oxplain why they so unmercifully pounded Charles Dickman at the St. Joo house the other evening. Several witnesses were examined and they seemed to exonerate the accused. Only one of them saw the beginning of the row and he olaimed that Dickman was to blame, All" agreed that all that Trevitt did was to pull off his coat and avow forcibly that he would see fair play between his partner and Dickman, but did not strike a blow. Dickman is un- able to leave his bed so badly is he punished, and as there were some other witnesses wanted by the prosecution the case was continued until to-morrow, and the boys let go on their own recognizance. Mrs, Mullin, the heartless woman who, with her husband, has gained some no- toriety by her neglect of her children, was here again Tuesday night, and again got into trouble. It seems that she now spends most of her time in Omaha, and came over here to see her children, who were takon to the Home of the Friend- less. She chanced to meet Ella Rohrer, a 8t. Joseph girl of her acquaintance, and the two, in strolling along the street, met James L. Seers, an Atlantic man ‘who had known Mrs. Mullin, Seers had a lady with him, and Mrs. Mullin, it is charged, called this lady *‘an old cat,” and other abusive terms, whereat Svers got mad, and, as Mrs, Mullin claims, drew a knife. Anyway, there was a street rumpus, and the officers arrested the three, Yesterday no complaint was filed against the man, but Mrs. Mullin was charged with vagrancy, aud tuis was susponded on condivion of leaving the oity at onon, o —— Strawberry Short-Cake free, To-day, at James & Haverstock's, cor- aer of Pearl street and Willow avenue. See Horaford's baker and get a piece. e t—— A Business Obange. As will be seen by the announcement given elsewhere the firm of Bushnell & Brackett has [disolved, Mr. L. O. Brack- wtt continuing the business in the Broad- way and Mr. D. W.. Bushnell in the Main street and Pearlsireet store. This firm has been doing business here for twelve years, and is one of the best known firms in the ocity, and individu- ally as well as a firm, they are as popular as they are enterprising. The Broadway store over which Mr, Brackett has had personal supervision for some tlme, will continue to enlarge its borders and in- crease its stock, under his exclusive own- ership now. The stock besides includ- ing stationery of all kinds, and toys without number, includes a large variety of specialtios, such as baby ocarriages, boys' wagons, velocipedes, hammocks, eto., and probably more little novelties than any stock west of the Mississippi. It hins become a street saying, that if one can's find what ho wants any where else, it can only be found at Brackett's, It is one of the most interesting stocks to inspect in the whole city, as he is con- tinually getting in something odd, new, handy, protty. The store running from Main street to Pearl stredt has been for a long time in the personal charge of D, W. Bushnell, whonow takes exclusive ownership. The blank book and stationery stock there is one of the largest, most varied and com- plete of any in the west. In books also, and periodicals of all kinds, there is al- ways & large variety, while the news counter has almost as many callers as the postoffice. In artists’ materials, pictures, pocketbooks, gold pens, albums, school supplies, eto., there is an endless variety, Mz, Bushuell, by close attention to busi- ness, and his happy faculty of perceiving just what the public needs in hia line, lnd his enterprise in getting it, has a strong hold and it 18 growing stronger daily. The dissolution of the firm is by no mesns & dissolution of the friendship of mapy others in the hope that they may win under the ne® arcangement fully as much prosperity and success, as under the old, and this wish will doubtless be realized, e ——— To-Day! Ihe Union Pacific in Adopting Stand- ard Time Makes Other Ar- rangements of Interest to the Puablic, To-day the Union Pacific adopts the standard central time adopted in this city some time ago. This leads to a change in the running of the dummytjcains betwesn this city and Omaha, ss is noted in the time table of the railway arrivals and departures, Besides the general change of twenty-four minutes the Union Pacific has arranged to have but one dummy train instead of two, shortening up the time between the two cities so that the train will leave each depotlevery hour, The time has been cut down to twenty minutes between the two depots, seven minutes from the Broadway depot to the transfer and thirteen minutes from there to the Omaha depot. Charlie Mack will continue as the con- other pissenger conducior, will have charge of the ferry cars, Theso ferry cars are to be put on at noon to-day, Track- master Jonning and a force of thirty mon were at work here yesterday building a dump, laying a track, and making ready for the ferry cars, Pons are being con- structed also, for the accommodation of stock. Under the new arrangement the ferry cara will bo attached to-every train oxcept the first in the morning and the lsstin the ovening. The first dummy to Omaha will now leave here in the morn- ing at 7:20, the firat dummy to arrive here from Umaha will be at 7:05, which will bo some improvement. The company does not seem to be mak- ing any arrangements yet to run its half hour dummy trains, as it agreed, but Oouncil Bluffs still lives in hopes that it will got something in return for its $40,. 000, avenue given to the company without any consideration. g QUEER WORK How The Mayor's Autograph Helped a Young Man Out of a Scrape. Peter Drury and Moses Epstein had some little difficulty the other evening —Monday evening—over a check for Epstein's baggage. It appeared that Epstein placed the check in Drury's hands to secure some indebtedness, and while the two were in the telegrapl of- fice, sending some mossage in regard to their financial matsers, Epstein grabbed back the okeck and started out with it. Drury called for an officer to arrest him, which was done. The charge lodged against him was for disturbing the peace. Drury was inturn arrested for carrying concealed weapons. Judge Aylesworth, on the testimony that there was no loud talk or disturbance, discharg- od Epptein. Intne other: case Drury presented by his attorney, * John Jay Frainey, the right hand convention manipulator for the _Carter Harrison of the Missouri slope,a cer- tificate signed by Mayor Vaughn that Drury had been sppointed a special policeman for ten days. The Judge therefore discharged Drury, the law pro- viding that special policemen have the right to carry revolvers. It was remark- ably fortunate that Drury got his ap- pointment in time to save him a fine, and his escape was a close one for hu was not in fact a special policeman at the time of the arrest. His appointment was not reported to the council nor his bond pre- sented for approval, until the evening after his discharge. It seems a handy way out of a fine to get from the mayor a a ten days’ appointment as special police- man, but where it appears that appoint- ments are made for any such purpose the upon the scheme by refusing to approve the appointment or the bends. e —— Stock Shipments.
