Investigation has proved that the fire in the Merchant's National Bank build- ing, on Thursday night last, did not orig- nate as first supposed. It was thought to have started from spontaneous com- bustion, The suspicions of Fire Chief Butler were aroused, and he determined to look into the matter. He went into the room yesterday morning, and his ex- amination was rewarded by finding unmistakable evidence of incendiarism An ink bottle was found in the mouth of which had been put a lighted tallow can- dle. Near It was placed a lot of cottcn rags thoroughly saturated with kerosene. These were all g0 located in the room that the flames from them would easily con- municate with a large quantity of papers placed fon a couple of desks near by, This room was occupied and used by A. Bevins, an attorney, and M. R. Risdon, the insurance agont. The last named gentleman had not been in the office for a couple of days, owing to sickness in his family. Bovins left the office about six o'clock in the evening and did not return to it. What could have boen the motive for applying the incondiaty torch is not known, Whoever did so must have had & key to the office, a1 the door was locked when the fire broke out. e it—— Bucklen's Arnica Salve, The grentest medical wonder of the world. The C.M. St, P. and O, to Run an Ex- clusive Passenger Train to Sioux City. On Sunday morning next, a new time table will go into use on ‘the Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul jand Omaha rail- way. Thereafter the train for Sioux Jity will leave Omaha at 8:30 a. m, The one from Sioux City will arrive here at 5:20 p. m. The train for Oakland will leave Omaha at 2:30 p. m. The one from Oakland will arrive here at 11:15a. m Another valuable improvement will also be made at that time. An exolusive paesenger train will be put on the road in place of the mixed one [now run between here and Sioux City. The running time Yof this train will be le:sened botweon Omaha and Sioux City two hours and a half. The train to Oakland will bea mixed one as heretofore, but its time of arrival at and departure from Omaha will be such that two hours and forty-five min- utes in tke city will be given passengers from as far north as Oakland, thus enab- ling them to visit Omaha and return the same day. It is thought by the officials of the road that Florence cut off will be utilized about the first of May. The track through the great cut has been finally laid upon a solid foundation. Fdes have been driven through the quicksand into the solid earth, Upon the ends of these stringers have been laid, and across them Alan, vo which the rails are spiked. The change of grade Teanlting from this cut- off, will enablo a single engine to pull sixteen loaded freight cars over the road, where now it can draw only eight, It will o shorten the distance to Sioux OCity five miles. e — §...
