A Villianons Attack Upon District At- torney Godwin Monday Night, He 1s Slagged and Left in An Insen- fsible and Bleeding Condition, Night after night people are knocked down and robbed in remote parts of the city, and the readers of the newspapers have become 8o familiar with such things that they read them and never think of them again, It seems, however, that there are other motives than robbery for slugging men in this city, and_this was fully proven Monday night by the brutal and un- called for asssault upon the person of District Attorney Parke Godwin. Monday evening Mr. Goodwin hadbeen out with a party of friends and did not return to his rooms until about 12:30 His apartments are located in the Cen: tral block, on Fourteenth street, between Douglas and Dodge streets. 3 r, Godwin returned about the time above mentioned and was either met by some one at the head of stairs or was fol- lowed up by some one, who struck him upon the head with some blunt instru- ment, knocking him senseless and precip- itating him to the foot of the stairs, As the hallway and stairs were perfectly dark, Mr. Godwin cou'd not see anyone and can form no opinion as to who his assailant was, and cannot state positively whether he was assaulted or not. Andrew Moynihan, who is employed in Floyd's place, tells the story in this man- | if ner. Mr. Moynihan rooms in the Central block, and he_ states that he had retired to his room about twenty minutes past twelve and had prepared for bed when he heard a loud scufiling noise in the hall-way, All was quiet for a moment ‘| full in Johnson’s face. THE DAILY BEE--OMAHA, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1884, report any and all who were found either oven or selling liquor. In consequence of this order the following keepers were arrested Monday: Thos, Callan, corner of Sixteenth and Capitol avenue; Shears, Markel & Swobe, Millard hotel; Kitchen Bros., Paxton hotel; Andrew P. Hansen South Eleventh street. They are charged with keeping open their saloons on Sun- day, and their cases will be tried this afternoon. —— For . Will sell separately or altogether, FRANK KASPER, mde 1223 S. 13th St. DANGEROUS CITIZENS. A Negro Arrested for Assanlt With Intent to Kill—A Heavy mper. @Monday Lewis Johnson, a colored man, appeared in police court and lodged complaint against Louis Givens and Maria Givens, both colored, for assault with in- tent to murder. Johnson said that he went to the Baptist church Monday to attend a sociable which was to be held there, and that he took with him a basket of pies. While there he had a slight al- tercation with Givens, and took up his pies and left. Givens followed him a short distance from the church when he (Givens) drew a revolver and snapped it K Fortunately the gun missed fire, thus saving Johnson’s ife. He said that he threw down his basket of pies and grabbed hold of Given's cheeks and into his eyes with both hands. Givens, however, was not alone in the fight, for no sooner had Jolinson grahbed when a dull thud, as if somebody had fallen, was heard. He then opened his door into the hall and lisiened. ~Present- ly he heard a deep groan and a gurgling sound. About this time a gentle- man, rooming across the hallway, opened his door and the two together, with lamp in hand, descended the stairs. Mr. Moynihan says the sight which confronted them was a horrible one. Mr. him in the face than Mrs Givens appear- ed upon the scene, and, tearing a picket from the fence, she began to belabor Johnson over the head with fearful effect. The complainant’s head was cut ina dozen or more places, and looked as though it had been run through a thresh ing machine. Givens and his refractory wife have been arrested and are now in jail await- ing trial. Godwin lay with his head upon the third step from the bottom of the flight and his feet up several steps higher. His face was completely bathed in blood, as were also his hands, and he was in such a fearful condition that he was not recog- ized by either Mr, Moynihan or his com- panion, Mr. Moynihan left his companion in charge of the man while he hastened for a police ofticer. Upon returning with the ofticer the blood had been wiped away from Mr. Godwin's face, and he was recognized. He was taken into his room, his clothing removed, the blood washed from his face and a physician called to dress his wounds. Mr. Moyniban did not see anybody ieave the hall way, neither did he see any one when he entered the building, only a few moments previous to the assault, Mr. Godwin's vest was found near the head of the stairs, while his coat and overcoat were found upon the stairs, but how they came there Mr, Godwin is un- able to say. Mr. Godwin was visited in his room yes- terday morning, and presented a horrible appearance. His eyes were swollen com- pletely shut and were highly discolored. Above his right eye were two large bruises, evidently made by a billy, while upon the top and back of his head were sevoral sovere scalp wounds. At the time of the assault he did not cry out, e —— Meteorological Summary.
