THE DAILY BE « COUNCIL BLUFFS, WEDNESDAY, MARCIT 5, 1884. ocourt will sustain the action taken here, and that the vote will be finally declared in favor of the court house. There cer- tainly ought to be some way of correcting abuses of the polls, and if it is proved that the Avoca people did really keep open the polls till after midnight and voted everybody and everything, it ought - | not to count. In Yesterday's Test It Bears Up Thirty Tons Withoat Feeling I, The New Structure Open for Travel. Yesterday forenoon thenew iron bridge across Main street was duly tosted in the presence of Mayor Bowman, the county board of supervisors, and several citizens. The city officials, with the exception of the mayor, were conspicuous by their absence, but, like most of the citizens, they felt that there was little need of testing any bridge built by Raymond & Campbell, whose reputation as contrac- torn is firmly established throughout the country. Asa test for the strength of the bridge, wagons loaded with dirt were hauled upon it, the horses detached, and the wagons run snug together until thir- teen of them were in place. Each of the wagons thus loaded weighed 4,300 pounds, so that the total weight was nearly thirty tons, including the horses, the men and the heavy body known as the county board. The deflection of the bridge was less than a quarter of an inch, This new bridge is the handsomest bridge in the city. It is an iron structure 100 feet in length, with an eighteen foot roadway and two six foot sidewalks. It cost 4,500, and its estimated strength is one ton to the foot, or in all about 100 tons. It seems high enough to allow even flood waters to pass through, but it appears that the old toot-bridges and other obstructions usen, D, 810 A boy named Stefler while sliding| Tirown, I b down hill by the mill school house yes- | ¥4 Supt. Yesterday there arrived in the city W. C. Bryan, an athlete, who as a runner and a base ballist gained plenty of friends and admirers here a season or so ago. Yesterday he arrived in the city, and while being greeted by his friends Oficer Rosecrans stepped up to him and gave him a cordial invitation to appear before Justice Abbott, where he found a charge lodgea against him of defrauding $100. 1t appears that Bryan, as mana- ger for some base ball clubs, had them stop at the Pacific, and it is claimed that he was security for the unpaid bill, and liable under the hotel act. His bonds were fixed at 8200, and he went out to get signers, and will have a hearing at a late date. | — " FOR LIFE. Clouser Convicted for a Second Time of Murder, The trial of Jasper Clouser has been taking up the attention of Judge Loof- borrow at Glenwood for several days past. It will be remembered that he was last yoar arrested in Colorado for the murder of two contractors near Pacific Junction in 1878, He was tried last fall and convicted, but Colonel Keatloy, his came to a close yesterday morning by the jury finding him again guilty, and hyxing the penalty at imprisonment for life. e —— PERSONAL, W.
