He Gets the Democratic Nomination for Mayor by One Vote, A Red-Hot Rumpus and Every Motion Contested. The Rest of the Ticket More Easily Made Up. Details of the Convention. The democratic city convention met at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. At a few minutes before that hour John Jay Frainey called the convention to order, stating that he felt it his duty to do in the absence of Mr. Keating, the chair- man, He nominated as chairman Dr. Cook, and declared him chosen. George Holmes objected to any such proceed- ings as long as Mr. Keating was expect- ed. While the discusston was going on Mr. Keating entered the room and called the convention to order again, thus ignoring the action previously taken by J. R. Miller has been complained of for cutting timber on W. H. Foster’s land. He had his case continued before Justice Abbott until March. Mr. Frainey. Mr. Frainey nominated Dr. Cook as chairman. Mr. Holmes nominated Mr. W, H. Waro, and this was seconded., As the chairman was about to put the vote on Mr. Ware's tellers. Frainey moved that he, as soc- retary, act in conjunction with them. Carried. The informal ballot stood: W. R. Vaughan 16, Dr, Macrae 8, Thos. Bow- man 8, A, C. Graham 2. Lacy moved that the vote be taken by roll call, each dele- gate depositing his ballot as his name was called. About the only quiet time had by the convention was when the formal ballot was being counted. There was almost & breathless silence as the fifteenth vote for Vaughan had been counted out by the tellers, and as the sixteenth was called out the silence was broken up in a general hurrah. It was quieted down enough for the silonce nec- essary to hear the tally officially an- nounced. It stood Vaughan 16, Macrae 14. Thero were some cries for Vaughan to be led in but there subsided and then the work vroceeded quickly and easily. # F. A, Burke was nominated by acclam- ation and unanimously for city auditor. For city attorney, Col, John H, Keat- ley and George A. Holmes were named. Mr. Holmes was nominated, he receiving 19, and Col. Keatley 11. The nomina- tion was then made unanimous. Coroner Connell has received a tele- gram from C. A. Sparks, of Grand Rap- ids, Mich:, a brother of the man who committed suicide a day or two ago, say- ing that he will be here to attend to the remains. The news-gatherers of the city papers yesterday surprised C. J. Best, the city editor of The Herald, by sending to h'm ried, Mr. Frainey called for a division, and then for the ayes and nays. An- other war of words arose between Holmes and Frainey. Holmes insisted that Dr. Qook was nota delegate. The doctor explained that he had a proxy. A motion was made to vote by ballot. The chairman ruled it out of order, as Mr. Ware had already been declared elected. Mr. Frainey then howled, and the opposition tried to stamp him down. “‘Don’t let them bull- doze you.” ‘‘Give us a square deal,” and other wrangling words were hurled from one side to the other. Frainey ap- pealed from the decision of the chair. Mr. Ware spoke on the appeal and took the ground that the call for ayes and nays was not made between the putting of the vote and the decision. Dr. Cook For civil engineer, Mr. Rohrer named J. F. Brodbeck, and moved his nomi tion by acclamation. Carried unani: mously. For city marshal, Mr. Mithen named J.J. White; Mr. Mitchell named J. A. Churchill; Mr. Keating named F. H. Guanella, A formal ballot was taken. It resulted: Guanella 15, Churchill 10, White 4. Mr. Guanella was declared nominated. For alderman at large Mr. Frainey, in a lengthy speech, named John E. Ahles. That gentleman declined the honor in a modest speech, in which he said he did not want his name disgraced by being linked with such a name as alderman. He invited them to turn out in the even- in&. if they wanted to hear him. W. 8. Pettibone and John C. Lee were named. Mr. Holmes declared that Mr. Lee was not a candidate. Mr. Walters said he was sure he was, A formal bal- lot was then taken, resulting: Pettibone 20, Lee 8, Almy 1. Mr. Pettibone was for his little heir an elegant silver cup, | tried to speak. The Home of the Friendless is becom- ing pretty well known, as is instanced by a lotter from Kearney, Neb., addressed to order. Cries went up for Holmes to “sit down—we're tired of you.” The chairman shut out Dr. Cook, as it had not been yet decided whether a man could sit in the convention of a proxy. Then Mr. Ware took tho chair, while Mr. Lacy moved that G. A. Holmes be chairman of the city central committee. Carried, The convention then adjourned. The nomination of assessors was then made, the delegates of the First and Sec- and wards meeting by themselves, these two wards being one district, and the simply to the “Sup’t Orphans’ Home, | hisses and applause wore about ovenly | Third and Fourth wards meeting to- Jowa,” and which the mail promptly sent here, recognizing this as the place. Richardson, who gave such an interesting performance at the roller skating rink last evening, has consented to remain to-day, and will be in attend- anoe this afternoon and evening. His skating on stilts is quite a novelty. This evening being for the general public, the rink will no doubt be crowded. The Rescue steamer was set at work yesterday just to see what it could do. In three and a half minutes it had sixty just the same, and made a little speech, in which he prophesied that the coming election would be an epoch in the history of the state and of the city.
