The Detroit Post says of Mrs Baxter, that *‘shoe is one of the finest speakers of the day.” The noon-day prayer moetings of the Y. M. C. A. are daily increasing in num- bers and interest. Mrs. George Oaterlin, of Tostevin street, while in Omaha last week, slipped and fell on a sidewalk, breaking her left arm, Mary D. Roan and Barbara Roberts seem to have had a set-to, and Justice Schurz is called on to decide who is at fault. On Saturday permits to wed were granted John E. Langreck and Hattie M. Sutton, of Avooca, also to John Libbie and Mary Dost, of Omaha, M. Haites, the artist, is just finishing seven large landscapes to adorn the walls of the Phoenix hall, and is making other decorative improvements in the place, The discussion of the new court house project has brought to the front the 8 and 20; trotting meeting, June 24, 25, 26 and 27; annual fair, August 25, 26, 28 and 29, The Towa circuit, to which this belongs, commences at Cedar Rapids June 10, then at Marshalltown June 17, and the following week here, The purses amount to £18,000. N. M. Pusoy and E. E. Ayleaworth were in Hardin township Friday evening talking to the citizens in favor of the new court house and jail. There were about 20 at the meoting, and all seemed to bein favor of the proposition, and several spoke enthusiastically of getting out on election day and working for it. As the time for another city election draws near, it is reported that another general ordor is to bo issued for the olean- ing out of all loafers and crooks infesting the town. It is to bo hoped that no such ordor will be issued, for last summer there was such an one issued, and instead of being less thera wero more. Tho fel- and only reason Warner was_discharged from the police force is because he showed his star, as all_policemen should do, only his was a_gold one, and the lat- est improved stylo of police uniform, sont direct from New York, made to or- der, which made the colored peliceman look very fine and showy, fer which he was discharged. Another election is near at hand, Remember it, please. J. W, Bostow, TO-NIGHT'S LECTURE. “The Handwriting on the Wall," at the New Opera House To-Night, This evening Mrs. Marion B. Baxter in to lecture in the new opera house on “The Handwriting on the Wall.” The excellent chance to hear this gifted woman, and at the same time to give the Home of the Friendless a rousing bene- fit, will doubtless be improved by wany. As Mr. Dohany has generously given the lows seem to know that it is only a joke, and 8o they rush in where angels foar to trend. Mr. Weir, the manager of the Council Bluffs underwritors’ compact, watched use of his new opera house, and the lec- turer has donated her time and expenses, the entire receipts will be clear gain for the Home. This gives a chance, too, for all who have not seen the interior of the new opera houso to admire its beauties. the tests of the waterworks Saturday, | With all these and other considerations, and expressed himself as well pleased, | the house should be packed. Will insurance men, who scemed confident that the fire protection was excellont, the enly bad break being that of the hose, Tur Ber has time and again called attention to the city’s great need of new and good hose. Tho need grows daily more apparent. Yesterday afternoon, at the Methodist church, were held the funeral services of John J. Dutcher, a veteran, whose death makes another vacancy in the grand army of the republic. The members of Abe Lincoln post turned out in a body, claim that Bayliss park was deeded tothe city on condition that the court houso should be built there. The adornments of the front of the new opera house are now being put in position and when finished will add greatly to the exterior attrac- tiveness of that building. as a mark of honor to their fallen com- rade, and appropriate services were con- ducted by Rev. Mr. Armstrong, Mr, Dutcher was a farmer, living near this city, and had been ill for only a few days, He was a member of the One Hundred and Korty second Indiana. There are some of the papers in the county who, in objecting to a new court The republican city convention for|house and jail, suy that the present build- nomination of officers is to be held at the |ing shall be patched up and enlarged. court house next Saturday afternoon at| Soveral years ago a proposition was sub- 1 o'clock. The ward primaries will be | mitted to do that very thing, but was held on Friday evening. Mr. Clayton has introduced a bill for the establishment of a separate insurance department, to include the supervison of banks and to provide for the appointment of a commiagioner thereof. The democratic city convention is called to meet at the court house next Monday afternoon, February 25, at 1:30 o'clock. The ward primaries are to be held Wedneaday evening of this week. Workmen were busy on the Main street bridge yesterday. Raymond & Campbell, the contractors, were afraid the Saturday thaw might damage it, as a number of the supports rested on the ice. F. Kelley, who had Bockhaff arrested, has now been complained of for carryine concealed weapons, and the muss is got- ting more mussy. Justice Abbott will hear one case on the 20th and one on the 23d, Ed. Ollisen has got back the panta- loons stolen from him. They were thrown over the fence of his yard with 4 note pinned to the seat, ““These are too large. They don’t match with Tilton's shirt.” The city marshal has received a letter from the chisf of police of 8t Joe asking if Mrs. Margaret King could be found here. Hoer daughter died there and left some property to her. The marshal has thus far been unable to find any such person here. The electric light is temporarily sus- pended until the new power can be ar- voted down because the building was not worth the patching. Now these ssme kickers try to get the proposition for a new building voted down, on the grounds that the old one ought to be patched. If they thought the building was not worth patching as it was several years ago, how much loss is it worth patching now. Some more grading is being done atthe Home of the Friendless, and it is expect- ed soon that another building will be erected on the same site, more room be- ing needed to meot the growing interests of the institution. Mrs, T. R. Brooks has been appointed as the head of the dressmaking and tailoring dopartment, and will give instruction to the inmates, as well as superintend the work done in this line. At present she will make her headquarters on Willow avenue, between Fourth and Main streets, and by the ar- rangements made the profits onall orders received from outside parties will go to the home. 1t is intended to open other industrial departments also in the near future. Marshal Jackson, who has lost about $1,000 worth of hogs fvom some mysteri- ous disease, has also lost a goat. The goat was bitten by a dog, and died of hydrophobis, a case which is oconsidered very remarkable. Some of the hogs which died, were also bitten by a dog, and it is thought that was the cawse of death, but the symptoms were not whol- 1y like those of hydrophobia, but resem- bled somewhat those of eholera, so- that the affair is rather mpysterious. Boekhofl's Residence and Grocery Saved From Destruction by tho Water Works, About 3 o'clock yesterday morning the watchman at Stowart's packing house discovered fire bursting from the rear of A. W. Boekhoffs frame building on Fif- teenth street. The building is occupied by Mr. Boekhofl as a gyocery store and residence and after sending in the alarm by telephome the watchmam' aroused the family, who up to that time were uncon- scious of their danger. Tho fire depart- ment responded with wondexful prompt- ness and gefSting streams cuickly from the adjacent hydrants, speediiy squotched the flames, 8o that the only damage done was to the rear of the building, except the damage by water on the stook of goods. The cause of the fire is unknown and the loss is covered by insurance. e —— A Card to the Public.
