The mayor and the city govern. ment- deposited a handsome =~ metallic reath, and at the city hall the mayor gave an address on m.- history of the ex. pedition. Leaving Tomsk the soldiers, drawn up outside the city, gave a parting salute. Thence they went to Omsk, at overy village wreaths being deposited in the sleds. By the courtesy of Gov. Podachenka, of Kransnoyarsk, the two officers had, received passes enabling them to take horses even from tho post, and consequently they suffered no delays. At Omsk, where they arrived the Ru qi)m Christmas day, the two officors wor coived by the governor general and the Geographical socioty pu\nouu-.l an ad- dress. They left Omsk January 7, es- cortéd out of town hf fifty (‘nnncku and 300 infantry to Orenburg. At nearly every village the cortege was recoived at tho entrance by Cossacks numbering from three to a dozen, who ocscorted it through the village. At Orenburg the bodies were transferred to the caskets sent from Amenca, the task occupy sovendays. A room was held apart in the city hospital for that purpose, A great number of wreaths and flowers were deposited in the coflins by the vice governor general, members of ‘tho geo graphical society, and the citizens, A beautiful cross and a gold wreath were presented by the editor of the Orenburg Listok. At Orenburg the sled journcy ended. FROM SLED TO RAIL, Thence the route was por railroad to Moscow. At overy station wreaths were deposited. At one station a little boy brought a handsome wreath in the name of the children of the town. Tn Moscow wreaths were presented by the Society of Anthropology, by the English colony, the French colcny, the American colony and tho studonts of the university. A silver wreath presented by the French colony is particularly beantiful. Thence they proceeded to Eydtkuhn, at overy station fresh wreaths boing depoisited. Saturday last the two oflicers arrived in Berlin, where, as already telegraphed you, they were received by Minister Sar- gon, and wreaths were placed in the coffins by the Berlin Geographical socie- ty and by Prof. Neumayer of Hamburg, and Herr Sternwarte on the part of the Hamburg Geographical uoclcty and the Hamburg North Polar commission. Dr, Gussfeldt brought from the president of the Geographical society, Contre-Admi- ral Baron von Schleinits, who presided over the meeting of the society that evening, greetings to the two oflicors, wishing them a safe journey over the Atlantic. From Berlin to Hamburg the railroad authorities courteously plm,&d a special car at the disposition of the two officers. The coflins, placed in the special car, were completely hidden from view by the masses of wreaths and flow- ers presented during the long j journey. Lieutenant Harber speaks in terms of the warmest praise of the assistance ren- every- where en route. The greatest praise is due to Lieutenants Harber and Schuetze for the manner in which they have ac- ¢ mplishedtheirsorrowful mission. New York Herald, Lieutenants Harber and Schuetze, in charge of the bodies of Lieutenant De- Long and his companions, have sailed from Hamburg in the Frisia en route for New York. Their work of bringing the bodies from the mouth of the Lena through northern Siberia and Germany has been well done, They started on their mission two years ago, and have spent two summers and one whole winter and the beginning of another at the mouth of the Lena, carry- ing on as *well the search for Lieut. Chipp by water and by land, Ow- ing to the impossibility of procuring enough dogs and deer in the delta_they were only able to transport the bodies of Lieut. De Long, Dr. Awbler, Mr. Col- lins and two others during the preceding winter as far as \u).uu,k where they were temporarily buried till a few months ago, The remainder of the bodies were uraneported on the first snows of last ‘October from Matvai to Yakutk by the officers with extraordinary difficulty, ow- ing to the softness of the snow, the bad roads and the prevalence of eatly winter storms. The officers left the great cross erccted by Melville standing, piling up the stones that Lad covered the cairn aroand it to keep it in position. HONORS PALL 70 THE DEAD IN SIBERIA, Arrived at Yukutsk the bodies were placed in wooden coffing lined with tin, ready for transportation. November 28, the roads being good for sledding, the journey homeward commenced. All Yakutsk turned out to bid farewell to the funeral cortege. All the officials, civil and military, headed by the aged and kindly governor of Yakutsk, Genoral Tenermaieff, who has been unfallm,c in kindness and courgesy to all Americans sojourning in or *passing through his capital, accompanied the sleds to the city limits, where 300 soldiers drawn up in line presented arms and fired three vol- borg they themselves transferred the dead from the wooden coffins to the cas- kets from the United States there wait- ing them, Of their labors in the delta during the summer and winter in the search for Lieut. Chipp they will present an interesting report on their return to Washington. Lieut. Schuetze has pre- pared an accurate and valuable chart of the Lena delta, showing every outlet of the Lena river, and every landmark in the delta, including even Sagastry, the place which De Long beliezed to be a myth. — — Old Song Remodeled.
