A party of soldiers passed through this city, westward bound, yesterday. ‘The remains of John D, Keating were taken to Dubuque yesterdayafternoon on the 8:40 train, ~There is a public “night school held on Douglas street, over Tirrell & Cook's shoo The first meeting of the A roporter of the Be ' yestorday met at the Paxton hotel two well-known and promnent Texas cattle drovers, D. R. Fant and Mr. Ellison, who were here to make arrangements to drive 20,000 cat- tle to Nebraska this year. “How is the dressed beef business prospering in Texas, Mr. Fant,” asked the Ber man, ““It has been a complete success from the day it started in last March,” saidh e, “'and this year it will;be carried out on a much larger ecale. Ilive at Goliael, twenty miles from Victoria, where they have got a slaughtering house of a capacity of seventy-five head per day In August last I went into their freezing houses and saw beef, killed three weeks before, just as fresh and sweet as it was the day it was killed. Tee arrangements for killing and freezing are very com- plete. The beef last year was put into rofrigerator cars and shipped to New Orleans, and sold from the cars. TI ear it will be stored in a freezing house in New Orleans and retailed from the house instead of the refrigerator cars. At Victoria the people prefer this dressed beef to butchers’ freshly killed beef, and the result is that butchers themselves are compelled to handle the dressed beef. This new method will do away with the butcher business to a great extent, This has already proved the case in Galveston. At Fort Worth they have just opened a slaughtering house with a capucity of 250 head a day. Sheep can be handled the same way as cattle.” “Isn’t this a more profitable way of disposing of cattle than driving and ship- ping them alive to market?” A great deal more profitable. It used to cost us $10 to $12 to get alive steer from Victoria to New Orleans, and now we get tho same steer to New Or- leans in dressed beef, and get the profit right at home. We save freight, food, stockyard fees and men’s wages. It is & big saving. All the cattie men are en- thusiastic over the new deal.” ““Then this business will prove a suc- cess in Omaha?” *‘Undoubtedly, an immense success e will subsist on bread and water, —A. It is reason- able to presume from their acts that these men in many instances are driven to commit these orimes from desperation. Sneak thieves, who enter houses by stealth and take away everything upon which they can lay their hands; robbers, who can “‘hold up” men on the principal strocts of the city and compel them to deliver over all their valuables, and men who live without any visible means of support or legitimate occupation, are in Omaha_by scores, and thould be sought out and brought to justice. It is signi- fioant of a bad cendition of affairs when men by couples come to the police station and ask for food and lodging for the night. Within tho last two weeks nearly & dozen robberies, thefts, and crimes of ¢ ‘that kind, have been committed. A rumor was afloat yesterday afternoon that there would be a grand “round up” last night of every one of the kinds mentioned above who was seen on the streets. Upon inquiry it was learned from the city mar- shal that that is a standing order to all police officers, but that the order would be enforced last night with no greater rigor than before, Every man whoisnot B ——— for_Infants and Children.
