Special Dispatch to The Bee. UHICAGo, January 4.—Speculation in grain and provisions continued through the week with considerablo vigor. Tho trading was largely on local account, outside orders heing absent. The general public is not expected to enter the market at present by the most conservative commission, although many look for a bulee in prices this month which shall induce trading by speculators in the north- west. DPrices until the middle of the week tended downward. On Thursday spirited buying sent up prices from 1} to 1ic, the largest improvement being in wheat, The activity was not, however, repeated on sub- sequent days and on the whole the range of prices was small. Thero is no change to mnote in wheat, 1t still continues to arrive in large quantities, The warehouses are nearly full and will shortly be overflowing. The same conditions exist in corn, By Feb- ruary first there will be room for no more, but storakeapers will probably build cribs for it, ‘The feeling is bullish on corn, and about even- ly divided on wheat. Provisions were generally firm, Mess pork guctuated over a range of G0 cents. The pncken who usually manipulate the market to suit themselyes are bearish, it is said, in order | p. to get dov the price of hoge. The latter ar- 1ive in by no means large numbers, Seneral business shows small change. The market is depressed for dry goods, boots and es, clothing, iron and crockery. The cold weather has xllghtly stimulated” the rate of woolens, No immediate improvement is Tooked for, and by many business men the out- look for the coming year s pronounced far from promiving, Banle oloarings' arg smal than usual, owing to these facts. (mnum,y shipments’ to the country were not large, Money is easy on good collateral and mercan- tile paper. o —— GRAIN AND PROVISIONS, ———t CHIOAGO PRODUCE, Cuicaco, January 4.— Flour— Market quiet and unchar ofiml medinm to choice spring wheat flours, 4 00@4 75; fair to tne winter wheat flours, 4 50@5 25; Minnesota bakers' good to choice, 4 75@> 1 ‘Wheat—. l-uxlxlnr upmm.l stronger but un- settled, advauced fo, then receded and closed easy at jc below yesterday; January, um Vebruary, U5h@95fc; May, 102h@1 023; winter wheat, quiet at 97@98c; spring wheat, higher, but closed lower at94)@94fc, Jorn—Market unsettled with fluctuations rapid and severe; shortly after the opening r‘cun reached l’(flllln higher than the close vastmdny, then decline: lrrsgulur]r under free offerings: closed fo lower for January, fe lower for February and jc higher for May: cash, B0{@57c; Januacy, 561@57c; May, 9] G, O s —Market opened firm; prices ranged jo higher; clused easy at about g higher for long deliveries; cash, 43hc; February, 334c; May, 81{@3ric.
