Arnold Jesse, charged with conspiracy, arrived yosterday for trial at this term of coart, Don't forget Seaman has a large supply of suitable gifts for your gentlemen friends. D. K. Shreeve'slittle daughter nowhas a little sister, and the father is delighted, of course. A post of the G.A.R., with forty charter members, is to be instituted at Tabor to-night. An alarm of fire sounded from box No. 3, was supposed to be a false alarm as they could not find any fire. Second Spiritual society meets every Sunday at 2:30 and 7:30 p. m., at Devol & Wright's, North Main street, up stairs. Sarah A. Sanford has commenced divorce proceedings against Jefferson Sanford, on a claim of drunkenness and desertion. The only occupants of the city colaboose now are free lodgers, who have no other place to sleep, and hence are not tempted to walk out. The Earling Gun club and the Council Bluffs club have arranged for a match shooting at the fair grounds this after- no0oa at 1 o'clock, The second alarm of fire yesterday morning was caused by a pile of lumber catching fire from the smouldering ruins of the furniture factory. Ole Anderson is now anxious to see some patent safety coupling adopted. He has just lost two valuable fingers be- tweon the cars at the Northwestern, Mrs. Cooper, at the Bloomer school building, was presented by herpupils yes- tarday with an elegant toilet case, satin lined, and containing a brush, comb, ete. Leave to marry was given yesterday to W. H. Vincent, of Hansen postoffice, and Melinda McIntosh, of Honey Creek; also to Kunade Peterson and Palien M. One drunken man, who was thrust into the cold chunk of stench called a city jail, after being nearly frozen sober, sung ot through the grating asking for a Ho said if he had chance to get warm, killed a man he would have been given 20 cents por wook [ comfortable quarters, but just becaure he took a drop too much he must be treated like a hog. There was so much senso in his remark as to show that he was not drunk enough to be kept in, and | he was allowed to seek a warmer and cleaner place. The now city building was ocoupied yesterday for tho first time. There were no dedicatory speeches or knocking off the necks of champaign bottles. The building is hardly that much of an im- provement. Still the police court open- ed up with six cases, one being a drunk, two being vagrants and two free lodgers. The court'room is clean, the old furni- ture has been revarnished, new matting Iaid down, and other sanitary improve- menta made. The new furniture has not arrived yet, but for the council there are to be individual desks for each alderman, and there is actually to be a table for the reporters, The new safes for the clerk and auditor are large and fine ones, and. soon sll the offices will bo settled as thoy will probably remain for years. Your lady friends wish you to got their Christmas Gifts at Seaman’s, Mrs. M. Carroll, fashionable dress- making, cutting and fitting a spocialty. Apprentices wanted. No. 720 First avenue, up stairs, e —— A NEW FIRE ENGINE. —_— It Threatens to Run Shenandoah— The Umaha Singers Delight . Their Hearers' SueNANDOAH, la., December 21.—The agents of the Shenandoah colony have returned amd report unfavorably as to locating the colony in Nebraska on gov- ernment land, Porhaps somo one in Nebraska had better rise up and read thom the story of the spies, and quote the exhortations of Caleb at Kadesh— Bamea to the flinching Israelites. Jacob Bender, cur leading harness- maker, is erecting another building to be rented for store purposes. Now and more stores are needed. Business men complain of rents being too high. Wo have had a fire. Our now fire en- gino came the day after the fire. It was run out one day last week for a trial. The brass shone, the loafers gathered around, a handsome young man with flushed countenance grasped the nozzle with enthusiasm. His whole attitude apoke louder than words can tell, sayin now we are safe from all fires, behols our servant in fiery trials, The machine ogan to squirt. ‘Tho youth's wrestling with the nozzle suffered it to play upon Sullivan's bags of flour lest they should be burned up sometime before the engine got ready. Perhaps Sullivan is mad. They next drenched the sidewalk scarred with fires of a former occasion, to show what might bhave been had the engine been there. That same evening Mrs, Oppenheimer fell down on the icy side- walk and broke her arm and Mr. Oppen- heimer is reported as getting ruyy to sue the town for $4,000 damages. And now some citizens are asking, ‘“What do we want with a fire engine ¢ E: 8. Ferrir, the gentlemanly elerk of our grain de\’er, . D. Lincoln, A company will! be organised and a factory erected for the making of tiles for drainage purposes, 'he enterprise of Tue Ber, manifested by pablishing the news of O'Donnell’s death on the morning of the execution, has been commented upon on our streets. Telegraphic news are received by the readers of Tue Bke, as a rule, twonty- four hour hours ahead of the readers of any important Towa paper published east of here. In these d‘:\“yu of narrow mar- gins this is a matter of great importance, to business men especially. The Omaha Glee club gave a concert last night in the opera house which was a musical treat. All who heard 1t were delighted with it. The soloists, Nor- throp, Wilkins, Estabrook, have splendid voices. The “‘Soldiers Chorus” was a marvel of execution, ‘‘Vocal Waltz” a harmony of swaying music, ‘‘Gathering Home" seized the heart. BY THE BRIGHT-LIGHT. A Banquet Tendered W, R, Vanghan at Bechtele's Hotel. Enthusiasm Over the Electric Light, Council Bluffs was brilliantly illamina- tedlast evening by[the Thomson-Houston light. This system has been introduced by the Pilcher Improved Electric Light Construction company into our city and is at present under the superintendence of Mr. E. A. Storey, a ropresentative of the Thomson Electrical company of Bos- ton, At the last exposition at Cincinnati the system under consideration, received the highest prenium and elicited encomius justly bestowed by the leading electrical journals in the United States and on the continent. Tt is to be hoped with sosuperior an in- stallation of.lights an is afforded this city, a company will he formed comprising our most prominent citizens and com. manding a capital doing credit to those constituting its membership, asexperience shows that electric li%yht stock payas big. Yesterday W. R. Vaughan, who has been at the head and front in getting the electric light started in Council Bluffs, waa the recipient of the following invita- tion, which is self explanatory: Counerr, Buurrs, In.. December 21, 1883, Hon, W. R, Vaughan, City: Dear Sir—Recognizing your indomitable push and onergy, as all worthy citizens must conceds, and fully appre what you did for our city whila mayor, and believing that a few more men like yourself is needed here to make us a great city, I desire to express my appreciation of your last boom of Council Bluffs in_the establishing of a beautiful and sun-like light for us, and do hereby most cor- dially invite you, and through you, the press of the city, to a banquet at the New European hotel, given in honor of yourself and the elec- trio light and would name 6 p. m., this De- comber 21, 1883, as the hour, P. BrougTAL, In response thereto the guests gathered about as tempting & spread as could be wished for. Bechtele’s table is on every day all sufficient and very tempting, but on this occasion it surpassed itself. A very enjoyablo foast of good things was had, after ‘which some remarks were made. Mr. Vaughan himself gave somo very sensible well chosen words on the relations of Council Bluffs with Omaha, and urged that time and energies should not be wasted in envyings or rivalry, but that growth, enterprise, and especially a building up of manufacturing interests was what merited attention and effort. . Colonel J, S. Tam, of Avoca, who was present, offered the following. b{ request o’ the patrons of the electric lig] Resolved, That we, the citizens of ABIJAH. Council Bluffs, do most cordially endorse the present electric light, known as the Thomson-Houston system, now estab. lished in Council Bluftsby Pilcher, Bowen and Vaughan, and we pronounce it one of the most perfect, steady, unflickering, mellow and sun-like lights that we have ever witnessed, and as their patrons and friends, representing all branches of bus- iness, we do most cheerfully predict for tl}:e light great success; and be it fur- or Resolved, That a vote of appreciation of the energy and push of our worthy ex- mayor, Mr. W. R. Vaughan, be here adopted. May he live long and continue to aid our city in the future as he surely has in the past. Meesrs.
