Coy secks a divorce from Henry Coy, on the ground that he de- serted her in November, 1881, Work commenced yesterday on the ground on Broadway between Tenth and Eleventh streets, which is to be flooded and used as a skating rink, The school reports for November show the average daily attendance to be 883 boys and 976 girls, making a total of 1,859, 79 more than during the preced- ing month, The safes have been placed in the new city building, the floors have keen scrubbed, the fires lighted, and now all that is needed is the furniture, which is on the way. E. Harkness enter- tained very happily a little tea party at their residence Tuesday evening, the company being gathered in honor of Capt Hart and wife, of Minneapolis, who are visiting here. Prof. De Jalma appears again at Do- hany’s to-night. He must be lined with sheet-iron, for he eats fire, chews red- hot iron as though it was tender beef- steak and performs various acts which are most mysterious and puzzling. Best of all he is an excellent mesmerist. There was much music on the street yesterday, or noise at least. Fifes and drums, brass horns, a red jacketed cor- netist and others, did their level best to attract the attention of the public to the clothing houses, the shows and other en- terprises trying this way of advertising. Officer Barhyte yesterday afternoon arrested a drunken man who was suspi- ciously trying to sell a set of single har- ness. The man claimed that his name was ‘‘Prof. Burbank,” and that ho won the harness at a game of cards. He will have a still better chance to explain to- day. “Your Olotnes Don't Fit You." “Your clothes don't fit you,” said a traveling man to one of his old acquant- ances whom he met on the trdin coming into the Bluffs the other day. ‘I am aware of the fact he answered. ‘I had my best clothes stolen from me in Chica- 0, and am going direct to Smith & Tol- er’s, 7 and 9 8. A Few Pointers mr Thu%n Who are Pazzled About Presents, Some Excellent Displays of Goods and Tempting Bargains, Where, how and whom to visit to get just what we want for the holiday season is the great question now. There arc many who are thinking of making gifts, who hardly know just what to select. For their benefit especially Tne Ber presents some pointers which they can con over at their leisure by the fireside, and then avail themselves of the chances offered. One hint, however, is especially important to have in mind. They should not delay in making their eelections, be- fore assortments are broken, or ‘‘just what they wanted” is gone. _As to prices there is apparent here no disposition to exact what are known as ‘holiday” profits. Prices in Councit Bluffs are rea sonable, and in some lines there are great reductions, When Tur: Bee reporter walked into Casady & Orcutt's he found these gentlemen overrun with business, but as usual they found time to be as courteoug and attentive as if there was nothing at all doing, OF carpots, curtains, shades, rugs, blankets, otc., this houso has an immense variety. The popularity of this house is apparent by the volume of its business with buyers from this and adjoining citics, J. J. Bliss' Christmas greens and ivy decorations at- tracted the attention of Tur Bre man who noticed odor cases, hand-painted toilet sots, leather hand satchels in the Intest designs, ladies neckwear and many novelties in fancy notions, suited for the holiday trade, which space will not per- mit_to enumerate. 7. Ts Lindsay & Co., the great boot and shoe house of this city, have a very large line of boots, shoes and slippers, both for adults and the smallest children, and a large line of rub- ber boots and overshoes; also artic over- shoes from which any person, rich or poor, can select from and be sure of ob- taining satisfaction, Any of the above named articleswould bo a very accoptable prosent to any person. This is the houso that a short time ago sold a pair of slip- pers for a cent in preference to having themlay in their store and become shop- worn, Bushnell & Brackett's store, running from Main to Pearl streets with a frontago on each, presents a fine holiday display, and a great variety from which to select prosents, suitable forany age or condition in life. Books, in sets and single, special volumes of fine art, holiday books richly illustrated and ele- gantly bound, attractive books for the young folks, full of pictures and stories to mado their eyes sparkle, and o large varioty of those beautiful fringe-edged gift books, one of the nicest remembran- ces of the holiday season. Of albums, photographs, and auto- graph and scrap-books there is a beauti- ful display. The showing of pictures, framed and unframed, and all manner of artists’ materials and articles for decora- tion, make this really the headquarters for art. Then there are many beautiful and useful articles for the toilet and bou- doir, dressing cases, odor sets, glove and handkerchief boxes, etc., ete., in plush, THE tion of town, for they can stop at W T. Brown's European restaurant, 404 Broadway, and satisly the inner man. This well known caterer has opened a new order book and is prepared to re- ceive orders for all kinds of tancy cakes, ice cream, oysters, candies, fruits and nuts for the holidays. The Boston Tea Company is the base of supplics for many families here, and the secret of the increasing trade is apparent when their large stock is seen and their prices asked for, In preparing for the holiday feasting, r member that at the Boston Tea stc there are not only all the needfuls for the table but a saving of fully ten per cent can be had, which can be devoted to pur- chasing gifts, Mayne & Palmer also have something in their line to offer at this season, and we think about as ac- coptable a pre given to any poor family is hard or soft coal, of which these gentlemen have a large sup- ply. A NEW JAIL, The Scheme for (-M(lrlg the County United on the Building Question. There seems no difference of opinion as to the fact that Pottawottamie county needs a new court house and county jail, but thus far the attempt to get the people to vote for it have failed. There is quite a feeling in the east end of the county in favor of having the county divided, it being claimed that it is too large and that it is inconvenient to come from the east ond to the extreme west end to the county seat. There is a strong de- sire to got terms of court held at Avoca, and petitions are being circulated to secure this wish of the west end. Signers are being obtined in the west end, on the promise that if the east end can only have its term of courts twice a year, then all will join in voting for a now court house and jail here—a sort of compromise. The grand jury yesterday visited the jail, and informally expressed thomselves as disgusted with it, and it is predicted that they will recommend to the county board that the question of building a new jail be submitted to the people. ———— velvet, alligator skin and various trim- mings. Many rich little novelties are displayed, and the new designs of holi- day cards and unique Souvenirs are es- {:ecinlly attractive this year. Ladies’ and-bags are very pleasing gifts, es- pecially those trimmed with fur. Then there are show cases with gold pens, pocket knives and other cutlery, opera glasses, pencil charms, card cases, pocket and memoranda books, and an endless variety of odd and useful articles for the library, the table, and oflice desk. Tuk Bee advises its readers who aro pondering the questin as to what and where to buy, to surely visit Bush- nell & Brackett, and having seen the display they" will certainly not charge Tse Bee with exaggeration in pronounc- ing it ono of the very best of the season. At Kirkland's Tae Ber man found a fine display of watches, diamonds, silver and silver- plated ware and table cutlery. One of the oldest and yet the very newest thing out is the old Roman coin bangle. Another novelty 15 the new ajustable ring, which can be worn on any finger. He has without doubt the finest line of carving sets over shown here. Kirk- land doesn't throw in any chromos, or make his customers pay {or any lot- tery chance, but puts full value into the goods, and sells them as cheap as any other reliable house.
