'Ihur(\pnrlu r asked: ‘‘What is your opinion of the political situation’” “Carlisle’s election, of course, nreans the democratic party is committed to taritt reform, and, for one, 1 glad to seo it., It will cause a Lealthier state politics, this dividing of the two parties on a live issue, than to have gone into another presidential contest with simply the offices at stakeor on_war issues. Sectional issucs are dead. No portion of the A ace in this country will over consent » equality, socially or politically, where he may be in a ni- merical ascendency, and the rest of the country will have to come to understand this, and the sooner the better.” Do you suppose all the power of the United States could ever make the people »f the Pacific Coast tolerate the Chinese, suppose the latter were naturalized and outnumbered the whites!” It is always in politics a question of force, and the greatest force is found to get the suprem: The ballot simply represents certain forces, and if it does not represent the greater force it amounts to nothing. Realizing that _they are the greater force, morally, intellectually and physically, the whites of the south will never pect the ballots of the negr majorities. “Whom do you favor for the republi- can nomination next year?” “No one particularly. There are half a dozen good men from among whom to choose, 1 think President Arthur is thoroughly acceptable. The feeling on the Pacific Coast in regard to this jues- tion is not as yet nmturul — —— Towa's Third Vaiiure. John A, Hall in Boone (Towa) Democrat. We have husked corn in Towa 50 years in succession, and this is the third time we have been compelled to say that the coru crop was a failuie, and we remark that this year it seems universal, whilein the former years some few farmers in every county had some good corn, and some of the counties had a full crop of it. For instance, in 1856, while most of the corn in Boone county was nipped in roasting ear, some farmers had ood sound corn, and Jasper, Iowa, ohnson, Mahaska and othercounties had as good a crop as usual. But not so this year of grace. Nobody in Boone has good corn, and no county in Iowa has good corn, but from one end of the state to the other corn is soft, weak, and lack- ing in nutrition. Of course all of us can find good ears of corn in our fields, but as a whole it is bad, It won'tkeep with- out sorting, and we doubt if it does with sorting. Freezing green destroys it, and though it does not turn blue, heat or rot after eribbing, it passes through a fer- mentation that akes it only chaff, the starch and whisky all ~ evaporat- ing. But this = need not causo There is an abund- us trouble ance of such as it is. We have shipped small amount for three years, and ten our stock on what we have, and must g0 without whisky, and oor bread until we raise another crop. It won’t make the times hard (they are far from good now), and 1o one is going to suffer in the 1 Had we sowed more wheat and oats we would have been happy. Let us heed these remarks in the future, and raise more wheat and onts every year. We have urged it on farmers and will continue to do so; big field of wheat, and if it at, mow and cure it e; will pay better than ay, and i TORPID BOW DISORDERED L and MALA‘H!A. There is no doubt that it will be dis- solved, and in its place may be formed a new association, which will cover territo that can not well be left out, The business on lines immediately west of the river is so intimately associated with that subject to the lowa Trunk Line associa- tion that it has become necessary to unite the two. This may or may not be done without war, It is surely to the interest of all concerned to settle the matter with- out trouble, and whether it will be done or not remains to be seen Everyone is now awaiting the Tuesday meeting, after which somedetinite action, one way or another, will be taken. The Chicago Tribune that DPresi dent Cable thought that the new arrange- ment would result in t benefit to the three roads. "That would cease to exist January I. A new pool, however, could be organized to take in all the competitive business west of the Miss, uri river. The combined roads had no desirs to foree the other lines to put in their purely local business, This matter would prob- ably be the subject of discussion at the meeting next Tuesday. Ho could not say what the final result of this contro- versy would be. That depended entirely upon the position the other lines would take, If they were willing to organizo a new pool on the terms proposed, well and good. well be avoided. As regard the reports that he had gotten up this matter to en- able him to speculate in stocks, and that he had made a large amount of money, he said they were manufactured out of whole cloth. He went into the agree- ment for the sole purpose of placing his road in as good a position as ite competi- tors as far as business west of the Mis. souri river was concerned. —e— Christmas Presents, “What shall 1 get fora Christmas present’” Such is the question that is bothering nearly everybody just now. The great variety of articles displayed in the stores makes a selection indeed a puz- Zing matter. While a present that is purchased may be prized Ly the recipient, it can hardly be appreciated as much a8 something that is made by the hand of the donor. Among the many fancy articles that areappropriateas gifts severalare newjwith the present season. A vel tty and acceptable gift to a gentleman is a cigar box lined with quilted satin and covered with plush or velvet. The cigars ave tied in bunches with col- ored ribbons, A pretty shaving case can be wade by cutting four pieces of cardboard eight inches lony by six wide, the lower corners to be rounded and to be covered, two picces with paper muslin, and two with silk.
