DAII Y BEE. 66UNGII. BLUFFS. The Usc of On Brmgs a Boy Into|*"o™ Tlmradny Mormmz, Deo. 6. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: (OFFICE: No. 7 Pear] Street, Near Broadway. MINOR MENTION. See Joseph Reiter's fall goods, Additional local on seventh page. Cheap Railroad Tickets at Bushnell's, The city council meets again to- morrow evening. The Gorman Catholics held a sociable at St. Josep i's accademy last evening, for the benefit of the new church. Baso ball in Baylisa’ park may be fun for the boys, but it is annoying to ladies and children passing through, as well as nervous men, Some shirts, aprons and other articles | areat polics hewquarters, held under tho suspicion thit they wero stolen from somebody's rocm The Union Pacific railway is charged with discriminaing against Council Bluffs in freight rates from points in Nebrask and a committes to mterview the officials | has been appointed by the board of trade. John D, Knox & Co., of Topeka, Kan., have sent to the library of the | Homo of the Friendlessa volune enti- tled “Path to Wealth,” one of their own publication, and which is said by those who have cxamined the book, to be one of unusual merit and interest. Eddie Collamer, the boy who is being cared for at the Home of the Friendless, is still quite low with malarial fover, but if thereisa possibility of his recovery be will wurely pull through, udging from the carefal nursing which Mrs. | Rocaafellow is giving him. _The home | soems to be well up in hospital work as well as other ways. The question of sewerage is still being discussed. 1tis a grave and important | one. The board of trade has decided to | ask the city council to invite Mr, Wil- liams, an engineer from Chicago, to visit this city and look over the situation, with a view of reporting what it is best to do about sewerage. He offers to come for his expenses, and if his services are de- sired longer, another arrangement can be | made, It is feared that the city council will | dilly dally along with the new fire alarm enterprise. lvery day that dependence is placed in the present alarm the city runs great risk. If there must be a wait for the new alarm, there should be no wait at all about abandoning the present one, and lot the department depend on the yells of the folks on the street in time of fire, until something better is had. The board of trade meeting Tuesday evening, was more largely attended than usual and showed a commendable in- easy of interest, Another meeting is to be held next Tuesday evening, and all business men and property owners should intereat themselves in the doings, as the board is intended as a meany of bringing benefit to the whole city. In his lecture on *“The Absurdities of Science,” at the Baptist church next Sunday evening, Rev. J. J. Lemen will doubtless interest and entertain his audi- ence as mugh a9 [n Y of the series, As M kiow, h2 % not fogyish in his thoughts, and while he is in no senso op- | pn!eg to science but rather the reverse, I it may be expected that he will talk plainly about his theme, These lectures aro evidently of increasing interst as the audiences cach Sunday evening are larger and larger. The action of the city council in having outside attorneys to draw up new or nances, seems more and more foolish the more that is learned about it, 1t appears that the city attorney, whose duty it is, and who has doubtless the needed ability to do it, was not even 1equested to draw the ordinance referced to. Aside, too from this 1gnoring of the ciy attorney, the ordinance was one which veferred t fmng rallways certain rights, and it| ooks queer, indeed, for the council to pass by the city attorney, and getlawyers | to draw up the ordinance, who are rnore | or less interested ax attorneys for -rail- ways in different cases, If this is to be | the mode of procedure, better abolish the office of ci v.y attorney. — THE NEW DYEWORKS, F. While the police | were on tho look-out for him, a youth | answering the exact doscription was in |the same | aftor_ caught for trying to cash a forged | check at the Citizen's bank. It seems that the youth is by no r although he appears but about seventeen business here, and was soon bans & novice, years of age, his face is as smooth asa [ babie's, and in size and appearance being lonly a boy. It appears that he got |some letter paper and envelepes at the Ogden house, with the heading of the hotel and there wrote a letter to Mr J. R. Davidson, the Pearl street dry goods merohant, and signed to the letter the name of Mr. Duryee. the manager Tho letter wes ono of inquiry concerning | a Charles Evans, who it said had applied | for a position there, and who said he had worked for Me. Davidson. The inquiry was as to the teuth of this and if true what manner of man Evans was. The youth after penning this epiatle took it in person to Mr. Davidson's store and waited for an answer, Mr., penned a reply on the back to the effect that he knew nothing of Evans, signed his namo as usual, this way obtained Mr. Davidson's signa- ture and began practicing upon it. He signed it to a check on the Citizen’s bank, payable to James M. Stanley or bearer, and calling for $25. On present- ing this, Mr. Arthur Ryckman at the bank at once noticed that it was crooked work, and telling the young man to wait a minute, stepped into Mr. Davidson s store, and being contirmed by the latter’s statement that it was a forg cry, started after the young man, who in the meantime had left the bank. in Bushnell & Brackett's store, and im mediately grabbed him and held him, while he sent for an officer to arrest him. The writer chides him for not following the advice given him, and a second lotter says he must look out for himself, for he seems hent not to follow the advice of friends, but to get into trouble con: tinually, There is nothing to indicate what the crimes are, hut they seem seri ous, and he urged him to go somewhere “into the states” and get work and that his clo*hes will be sent him after he gets settled, Among the other papers were a mem- orandy of signatures of busingss men were Motealf Bros,, B, W. ational | Among tl Hightand Charles Hanley, First bank, of Omaha, ROS, In one of the lotters it is stated that The Denver Tribune of the 18th gave him about a column and a half, and the writer of the letter says that he can endure no more of the shame and mortification of the youth's career, The youth himself is very close-mouth- ed, and has little cr nothing to say.
