Prosident Harris, of Red Oak, has called a meeting of the state fireman's association to be held in Dea Moines, December 19. Mackay, rector of St copal church, will doubtless be a treat, and Dohany's hall sheuld be crowded. It need not be said that Mr. Mackey finost speakers who ever lived here, and addi- tional mterest will be added to the lec ture by its being illustrated by a large number of pictures thrown upon car fifteen feet square by means of the stere opticon, which will ‘be operated by Mr. Barke. is one of the public One of the strong points urged for giv- ing the Union Pacific a £40,000 avenue, was that it would be so much more con- venient for merchants to deliver freight at the corner of Broadway and Union avenue than to haul it clear to the trans- fer, and porsons wanting to cross from one city to the other in a carriage could driveonto a “ferry” car and go right through. The “ferry” cars do not run through, and the only direct way todrive to or from the transfer has been gobbled up. It looks as if the Union Pacific was o little absent-minded about its promise 80 readily given, Where are the freight facilities, too? Kasson and Emerson, the young men whose cases have attracted” considerable attention here, were before Judge Ayles- worth yesterday. It will be remembered that they were arrcsted for stealing a railway ticket from the Chicago and Rock Island office and that when arrested Kas- son had a gold watch which had been stolen from Mrs, Horten’s house where he had been boarding., It was shown that Emerson sold the ticket, but that he did go for Kasson and believed that it Mrs. Sadowski, whose husband was killed by the cars Monday, and who is in a delicate condition herself, is reported a8 rallying faster than was expected. The postoffice building is undergoing some minor improvements, but, by the way, isn't Council Bluffs to have its new government building pretty soon? The police have received notice to be on the lookout for a pair of mules stolen from Joo Smith in Andrew county, Mo., | the bridges swept away by tho floods of | | Coun- | gt spring, spoaks very badly for the en- | v, and when last heard of headed for cil Bluffs, Marshal Jackson has been filing infor- matiens against the delinquent saloon keepers, and bringing them to time. The extra costs are about $4 for not paying for license promptly. Justice Abbott was yesterday busy in hearing the case of David Rat'iffe, in whose house it is claimed that some of the lumber stolen from the Hall school building was found. There was a quiet liklo wedding at the parlors of Kiel's hotel yesterday, the con- tracting parties being Mr. K. C. Mass| not conveniently visit more than one of | T the Firemen of Towa: and Mrs. Dora Hock, both of Silver fth Creek. Justice Vaughan officiated. The public library is growing. About soventy-five books were added last month and the directors are already talking of gotting larger rooms, the number of visi- tors being also on the increase. A. G. Brown, an employe of the gas company, while at work on Washington avenue ycsterday, was some way struck by a horse and received some severe in- juries, mainly to one of his legs. Isn't it about time that the Union Pacific fulfilled some of the promises made when it got the city council to give up Union avenue? Where are the half- hour trains, the double track, the treight house, etc.? 0. B. Birk and John Shiverly were arrested yesterday for disorderly con- duct, in having the night before kicked over some boyes and oyster cans in front of Louie's restaurant, and making night hideous generally, A number of the ladies who are inter- osted in the girls' sewing school, which meets every Saturday afternoon in the parlors of the Confirngntmnul church, are preparing to give the girls a big Thanks- giving dinner, and the plan is receiving liberal and hearty support. Elizabeth Whitney has commenced suit against the city claiming $5,000 damages, because of injuries received by falling on a defective sidewalk on Sev- enth street, between the creek and Mynster street. Her injuries were a broken collar bone and some bruises, The board of trade is to hold a meet- ing next Monday night. Thereshould be a waking up of the business men and an enthusiastic rally at these meetings. The least that the busincss men can do i to spare enough time and thought to spend an evening occasionally in dis- cussing the interest of the oity, D. L. Boyer has commenced an action against the Wabash railroad, claiming $300 damages, on account of some hay burned, as he claims, by falling sparks from a pu-ipg locomotive. His attor- neys are Wright & Baldwin, rather an unusual side of the case for them totake, as the firm is generally retained by rail- way companies, was all right, Ho was therefore dis- charged, whilo Kasson was held under 8300 bail to answer to the grand jury. n the charge of the larcensy of the watch, he was also bound over, the bail being fixed at $200. Being unablo to furnish bail Kasson went back to jail. Times terms the affair a fiasco, and gives the following details and prediction: The adjourned meeting of the Iowa Trunk-Line association, which was to have been heid yisterday at Commis- sioner Midgely's office, was rendered un- nessary by the withdrawal of the Mil- waukee & St. Paul road from the asso- ciation, and an indefinite postponement is announced by the commissioner. The situation does not lose its gravity, and all of the lines interested are getting ready for a fight. The Northwestern has an exclusive line direct to St. Paul, but the Burlington & Rock Island will have to work together over the same linoe. Each of the roads owns one-half interest in the Burlington,Cedar Rapids & Northern, which runs direct. from Burlington to St. Paul. The Rock Island there has a further advantage in a traffic arrangement over the Albert Lea route, running from Liberty City to St. Paul, ‘ If mattors are not fixed up before the 412 Broadway, Council Bluffs, Iowa. These are merely traflic agreo- ments to maintain rates, and when the pool collapses there will be no occasion to maintain rates in‘these associations. The Southwestern Railway association can only bo affected by an_extended war, it is thought, 1t existed long beforo any Towa association was dreamed of, and has woathered several stormy seasons among its northern neighbors, = The cutting of rates to the Missouri river will naturally offect through western business, and the result of such a war as this promises to be would be a general demoralization of great magnitude. In almost any other city under the sun, the damages repaired at once, even if extraordinary measures had to be resorted to. Every stranger visiting the city has before him this striking illustration of the lack of of enterprise, and business, too, is affocted by it. Dyer, and failing to find him, the old lady was cared for at the home of the friendless. It now appears that the old lady, wha is 0 advanced in years that she has lost much use of her memory, was sent through from Oregon, and was tobe met here by her son-in-law, Mr. J. V. Bishop, of Springville, Iowa, who was to escort her to her son, who lives in Davenport. Mr, Bishop was taken ill, and was unable to come hero. Ho ac- cordingly telographed to Mr, Jones, who lives here, and who married a grand- daughter of the old lady. Jonos was at the transfer when the old lady arrived, but as he nor his wifs had ever scen her, they missed her, and the old lady wandered about the city, while Jones telegraphed Bishop that she had not come. There was considerable tele- ?nphmg done between Oregon and the owa relutives, and in the meantime the old lady was cosily cared for hero in the home for the friendless, She being traced to this city, her son came on here and has now taken the old lady to his home in Davenport, It is probably the last trip the feeble old lul will take, until she goes to that home from which no traveler returns, She will doubtless spend her declining days at her son's home, If there had not been such an in- stitution in Council Bluws as the home for the friendless the situation of the old lady here would indeed have been pit- iable.
