BEDFORD & SOUER, Real Estate Agency, IEBAST STDE :14th Street, het. Farnam and Douglas, THE OLD WAR GENERALS, Thos> Now Li |t|nl and What They are Doing. Washington Correspondence Boston Adver tiser, “Only eightoon yoars ago the rebellion closed,” said an old army officer to me, the other day, “but the generals of tho war are fast going out of sight.” Then howent on to say: ‘‘Moade, Thomas, Hooker, Garfield, Kilpatrick, Burnside and Halleck are dead. The next fow years will seo the list lengthened. Gon, Grant is on toward 70, He comes to Washington often, and walks quietly about the streets, with his cigar in his mouth, better dressed than when he was President, and looks as if life agreed with him, Sherman is 64, and he looks older, but the family is hardy, and he is likely to seo 1000, “The youngest of all tho great leaders 18 Sheridan, now to com mand the army, and he is but Sheri dan was a Major General at 30. Fitz John Porter appears here overy winter, white-haired and broken in framo—a little old gentleman, who looks back on twonty years of disgrace. His old com mander, McClellana, now a rotund man, with bending shoulders, has not changed much of late. Heis rich, and entertains well in his New York city home, but the activity of his life is o He likes still to tell of his campaigns. Pleasanton, the hero of a hundred cavalry fights, lives quietly hore, and can bo found any day reading the papers in one of the oftice on newspaper row. His hair and moustache are white, and his voice gentlo as a woman's, You can say the same of Rosencrans, the idol of the army of ths Cumberland, Ho and his wife live almost unnoticed on Capitol hill during the time he spends here ]n-rfnrmm" his dutics as a Califor nia congressman. His complexion 13 ay Aulm. and his hair hair, with a mili .r, cut, white as snow. The man who commanded 100,000 men at Chick- amauga seems abashed the confusion in conyress, and seldom rises to speak. Gens. Hawley and Logan are the two other most distinguished generals in congress, Both are 47 yoars old, but neither has a gray hair. (ien. Rosecrans will be reinforced this winter by an old companion in the western armies, Gen. Slocum,of Brooklya. He has been incen gress before. Hewserved, I believe, four years soon after the cloge of the war, Gen, Sickles is practicing law in New York, and Stoneman isgovernorof California. Double day, who was in Fort Sumter when it was fired upon, lives in New York, and is writing a book; Humphreys, Hunter and Crittenden may be seen almost any day about this city, where they own fine houses and live handsomelyon the retired list. Fremont is no longer rich. He and his wife, Jessie Benton Fremont, are forgotten in crowded New York. The general whom the Vermont troops wor- shipped, George J. Standard, with one arm gone and half & dozen wounds sits up at the Capitol during the sessions, tending the door of the members’ gallery of the House. The Democrats promise that he shall not be disturbed. He is so inoffensive that the pushing women al- most overpower him on days when a crowd visits the Capitol, and yethe saved the day at Gettysburg, and fellwiththree wounds while leading a forlorn hope at Potersburg. MeDowell is on the retired list. Don Carlos Duell runs an iron furnace in Kentucky; Banks is a United States marshal; Hancock, Schofield and Pope are still Major Generals, but the last of them will retire in three years. Gen. Howard is at Omaha, a Brigadier. Gen. Torry is the youngest of the Briga- diers who won fame in the war. With timbor and lumber; liabilities are about equally divided botwoen this oity and outside [:mu, but what amounts are held by banks here the Wetzels to stato. The Chickering and other failures swamped the Wetzols, but they claim they can pay dollar for dollar. There aro rumors of coming failures. e— d of a Strike. November 6.—The Chicago Daily Nows' LaSalle, Tlls., special says The coal miners' striko, which began July 1, terminated thig morning, four hundred miners roturning to work. The strikers had demanded that the mine ownors dis but this was not acceded to. e - In Search of Information. Orrawa, November 6.-~The Dominion sovernment has heon requested by the “nited States authoritios to furnish fur ther information in relation to the opera- tion of tho postal savings bank system of Canada. A Swindler Arrested. St. Lovs, November 7.—The St. Louis Court of Appeals this morning decided the application for a writ of cirtiorari quashing the proceedings of the board of police commissioners in removingex-Chief of Police Campbell. The decision virtu- ally reinstates Campbell aschief of police. — — Coal Miners' Convention. Pirtseura, Pa,, Novewber 6.+The river coal miners’ convention called for the purpose of establishing a uniform rato for mining in the Oil River pits, and also to get miners out who are working for less than the tribunal price, met here to-dsy and was lightly attended. The morning session was taken up entirely with affecting an organization, after which they adjourned for dinner. In stated that two thousand winers in the fourth pool were working for one.fourth of a cent less per bushel than the estab- lished rate. e —— Vain Hope. New Orleans Picayune. Speaking of the weather, a Cincinnati paper says: “Sunshine succeeds slush,” good luck he will succeed Sheridan in command of the army. Gen. Wright, with benevolent face and patriarchal beard, has turned from war to projests of_river and harbor improvements. Gil- more, Parks and Weitzel, once com- manding corps and armies, are now in charge of light houses and fortifications, Grierson, the famous cavalry general of the western armies, is broiling in Texas with the mounted colored regiment which he commands. They are all getting on toward the downward track. In ten years there will not be a general officer of the war in active life.” ——— Roast Be Derroir, November 6.—A fire at \\alkcr\xllu, Ont., about three miles above this city, on the opposite side of the river, destroyed an extensive range of sheds attached to the large distillery of Hiram Walker & Sons, and 300 head of cattle stored for fattening. A high wind was blowing directly on to the river. Had it been in the opposite di- rection nothing could have saved the en- tire town from destruction. Smaller buildings were also destroyed, Loss es- timated at §50,000; well insured. —— LATEST FOREIGN NE LONDON NOTES, Loxnon, November 6.—Chief Justice Coleridge has consulted Charles Russell and other leaders of the English bar garding the diflferences of prwudhru in the high courts of Kngland and America, One of the points discussed. was the ad-, mission of foreign lawyers to practice 1 the English court, It is probable that: the Government will introduce at the next session of Parliament the household suffrage bill, which shall apply through- out Great Dritain and Ireland alike. The bill for the redistribution ef seats in the Commons will probably follow. PARLS NOTES.
