The following from the Salt Lake Tri- bune will prove of interest to many of our readors: A large audience assembled at tho Lake Theater last evening the attraction being Paddy Ryan, the heavy-w champion of America, in a friendly contest with his trainer, Mike Kane. The audience was quite enthusiastic at times, but there was nothing rough in the entire programme, and the large number of ladies present appeared to enjoy the en- tertainment as thoroughly as those of the sterner se: A nuwmber of set-tos had been arranged between local pugilists to help fill out the evening, over which *‘Parson” Davia act- ed as master of ccremonies, and H. J. Stone, as referee, giving general satisf: tion. The contest arranged was for asilver cup to the winner of the three rounds of two minutes h, one minute rest, with soft gloves. This was conducted accord- ing to the Marquis of Queensbury rules, oxcepting a_reduction of one minute in the rests. There were eight contestants for the trophy. The first called were William Shultz and a “Paddy Ryan,” in which Shultz leclared the winner., ongre Kelley and George Denney sup plied the eecond set-to. In the second round Kelley was knocked down by his antagonist and in falling hurt his hip so severely that he was unable to come to teh at the call of time for the 1d. of-to between George Leslic and Mike Fitzgerald, the former was de- clared the winner. This bout caused yme excitement, but it was all accerd- « to the rules. {he sparring between Donald McDou- ald and James Garrity was declared a rast by the referec. . 1. Brubaugh gavea fine dis- play of club rwinging. He presented sone forty different motions and showed himself an expert in this class of physical exercise. Joln Moran and a John Hayes gave a frendly contest. A friendly contest was also presented by James Garrity and a “John L. Sulli- van.” This proved the liveliest contest of the evening, Mr. J. D, Turnbull gave a fine cxhibi- tion of both awkward and fancy roller skating, aud was called out & second time. At tho final contest Leslie and Denney were the only two appearing. After o hard battle the prize cup was awarded to Leslie. Thos. Austin the *‘colored professor,” was present, and willing to spar with any comer, but 1:0 one was found to contest with him, Last of all came the feature of the eve- ning. 'The celebrated Paddy Ryan and hus trainer, Mike Kane, were introduced. In his sparring costume, Ryan presented a picturo of a perfoct man physicyly. Both celebrities were in good spirits and gave a fine exhibition of “scientific spar- ring lasting through three rounds. The fino movenents of these experts were ap- plauded to the echo. While “slugging” ai arule may be con- sidered a rather brutish employm ent, it is but justice to state that there was noth- ing disgusting or exceptional in the por- formance given by the Ryan party.
