It gives much more than ordinary railway guides, and the commercial traveler who once uses it will always do so. The formal opening of Bechtele's new European hotel attracted quite a large number of visitors Saturday evening. The building itself is a beauty, and is thoroughly fitted up for comfort and con- venience, making one of greatest im- provements made in the city this season. There never was & more complete estab- lishment in every detail, and the man- agement proposes to keep it 80, It can- not but win a large patronage and prove a succere, The Mutual Benofit association ha moved its office to No, 19 Pearl streot, over Bushnell's store. Secretary Dugot reports that the association is increasing its business very rapidly, and it is not only on a sure and solid foundation, but is growing in a healthy as well as rapid way. Fitty or sixty new members are Theing added every week, and the associa- tion, too, rejecting all doubtful risks, and throwing out many applications which other companies would receive. The pol- icy seems to be to build for the future with due care and caution, rather than make a temporary boom, and Council Blufls may well foster such an enterprise, Tue Bre acknowledges an invitation to be represented at the testing of the new bridge across the Missour: river, near Blair, Neb., next Saturday. The bridge is pronounced an excellent piece of engineering, and its opening will bo an event of no small moment. The invita- tion is a reminder of the time when the Union Pacific bridge here was opened for business. “‘Bismarck,” representing a Chicago paper was here. Thero was great delay and the crowd got tired of wyiting, Finally Bismarck arose from where he had been sitting waiting for an hour or more, and said: **Vell, boys, if dot train don't come right away quick, you know what I do?” Of course they didn’t know, but supposed that his pa- tience being exhausted he would leave the -flhir“tli‘fl usted, *“Vell, if it don't come soon, I'll just sit mysclf down and wait.” And sit he did. The Street Car ooui;»nz las been re- organized, the Union Pacific having now & majority of the stock, and hence con- trolling it. It is understood that some changes and extensions are to be made It is proposed, if the city council will ive rlw privilege, to run street cars down i llmtllfl from the lower part of the transfer, instead of running by Broadway. The line on Broadway would then simply connect with the dummy train at Union avenue. The line proposed from the transicr to Main street is to be of suchrails as will permit its use for strect caxp and for freight cars both, the same line to serve for each. is also in- timated that the strect car line will be Broadway to Gei wery. in no tance along the barbed wire. It looks now as if the present old hole would have to be use all wiater. It is a horrible place at the best, but when in its present filthy condition it is unfit for use, and it 18 an outrage on humanity to put anybody in there. The stench is awful, the windows are broken out, and no stove is there to warm up the place. Even the wooden bunks are lacking beards, while vermin abound. If the city is to use the place this winter it certainly should be fixed up 80 as not to be altogether place of inhuman torture. The old city building itself bears many marks of povey. The front door has not sheard a knock for weeks, and the old stove in police headquarters is lack- ing in even mica.
