THE POLICE ACT, The announcement of the possibility of of the snle and distribution of any meat save the very hest, coming together with the news of the action of tho stock yards hoard in Chicago, created considerablo talk in this city outside of butchers' cir clos. The police became alert, and Ofticer Walters, whose beat is at the depot, kept his eyo open for any such wagon as that described, COMING FROM THE TRANSFER and his efforts were rowa ded, because on one of the early dummy trains a wagon driven by a boy came off the furry-car. The wagon contained the body of a large steor. Officer Walters stopped the bo; and asked him where ho was going with the beef, and when the boy told him that it was for the market of HARRIS AND FISHER the policeman allowed him to pass, sup- }mainm a8 ho had a right to, that meat or 80 responsible a firm must be all right. Tt was & veiy short interval before the boy returned, too short, in fact, for him to have delivered the meat at Hacris & Fisher's market, which is up on Dodge street. This awakened the suspicions of the policeman and he immediately ARRESTED THE BOY, whereupon the little fellow commenced to cry and confessed that he had lied about the meat, for it had been taken to a shop on South Thirteenth street and ho was now going back to Couucil Blutts, where he lived. The owner of the wagon now came up and explanations followed. Marshal Guthrie was summoned and all repaired to the meat market aforesaid, whe AN 1y VESTIGATION was made. It was stated that this par- ticular beef had been downed in the mud and sprained or broken his leg and it had been killed immediately at the Spoon Lake stock yards, and sold, as was cus- tomary, to the Omaha party. Mr, Har- of Harris & Fisher, examined tho meat and pronounced it unfit for this market, while othors thought it good. THE TROUBLE T8 that animals who meet with accidents of this kind pecome foverish and their blood is poisoned and the effect of cating their meat is often a septic fover, very difficult to trace and to treat. The boy was released and no further arrests were made, the butcher promis- ing to buy no more meat in this manner, The body of the animal was taken from the hooks and after the FAT HAD BEEN CUT OF¥ to be rendered into lard, the rest was thrown away. It is to be hoped that no evil effects will come of the meat already sold, which was procured in this cheap and unlawful manner. In the dispotches from Chicago yosterday, in regard to the difliculty there, Health Commissioner DeWalf states that it is impossible to es- timate the deloterious effects upon the people of Chicugo caused by the sale of numerous cancerous beeves. The cffect of cating this beef, says Dr. DoWolf, is septic fover, be u«fegm. of blood poi soning very similar to fever from other causes; hence the inability of physicians to trace cancerous meat. Dr, i)e\\'nlf has no doubt but that a number of deaths have resulted from the consumption of this meat, sold with knowledge of health authoritios, — A Grand Organ for # Song, One of the most remarkable offers ever made to the publio is thatof Daniel ¥. The city has been comparatively free from burglars and thioves for some months past, but it seems now to be once more infested by a gang, and the num ber of depredations within the past few days is quite alarming to timd persons About the most important one of all was that in which Mrs, Ross, who keeps a boarding house on Capital avenue, near Thirteenth, was robbed of a gold watch and chain, a pair of bracelots, a neck chain and a diamond cross, the value of all summing up to about $200. This robbery occurred on Monday morning enumerated and inaddition to the articl a monogram pin was stolen from one of the boarders. The house of Mr. Wm, Soderstrum, on Capital avenue and Fourteenth stre t, was entered by a burglarabout 2 o'clock yesterday morning. Two little dogs in the house were aroused, and one of them ran into the room of Mrs. Soderstrum and woke her by jumping on the bed. She look- od out of the window, but scemg noth- ing, did not pay any further attention to the dog. , Some time after midnight yesterday morning a burglar, supposed to be the same one who wperated at Mr, Soder- strum'’s house, placed a borrowed ladder carefully against a window of the servants’ seven diamonds, and inside of this a bi- It was to have been best bicycler at the State fair. stner then disappeared nnd the next went to CEH'an, for on Friday swmthe firm of Max Meyer & Co, ved a dispatch from Mr. Post, secre- of the Lyon and Healy wpany in Chicago, saying, tner is here, what shall we do “with him.” This dispatch was turned over to Mr. Festner's father, and it is probable that by this time the erratic young trav. eler is in custody, though the elder Fest to the press regarding his son. in this city with the St. Bernard com- mandery Knights Templar, Julius ner went almost wild over them. Ascending to the second story he removed the window and entered, carrying it across the room. There were four girls sleeping in the room. While he was crossing to the next room one of the girls named Jessie awoke and saw him stand- ing over her. She cried out, “There’s a man in the room!" One of theothers said, “‘Oh, pshaw, you're dreaming.” Jessie exclaimed, ‘‘No, I'm not, for he's looking at me!"” At this the other girls woke up, and it was hard to tell whether they or the burglar were most fright- ened. Jessie was afraid to stay in the room, and called to Mrs. Marks’ sister, who was in the next room, to let her in. That lady, fearing that the burglar might also make a break in that direction, locked the door.
